They've cancelled games with UNC in order to build up the program.

I believe we are scheduled to play up there in '15, but I wouldn't be opposed to adding a home and home with them for these years as well. The question is...would they want to play us if they're trying to build up their program?

How about 1:1 with UNC.  First game in Athens in 2013.  ESPN game on a Friday in early September.  After we bust into BCS and win the bowl game, UNC will need the game to help their SOS.

Seems like a weird move.  Wonder if they'll cancel on us.  After all, we are better than UNC.

Realistically, we are going to win a lot of games.  Optimistically, we are going to win A LOT of games.

Yes, but there's always room for change.  Maybe we could trade Austin Peay to Miinn for UNC.

Drop the home game vs. Austin Peay in 2013 and play at Minnesota.  You still have 6 home games.  Buy out the Idaho series all together, because they might be FCS if they don't find a league affiliation and have Minnesota come to Athens in 2014.

If they end up in FCS, would the NCAA grandfather them in for the sake of our schedule and count 2 FCS opponents?

They are set to become an Independent, but I would rather drop that series and not make a trip to Moscow, Idaho

I don't think the NCAA takes into account when the deal was made that both teams were FBS. Rather, it matters when the game is played, and if Idaho is FCS by then we'll be SOL.

Ya know, everyone is focusing on a game with Minn. I wouldn't mind seeing a game or two with North Carolina. I wonder of we could get them to come to Peden?

Minnesota is already on our schedule.  2015 I think.  Would be kind of funny to drop them for North Carolina.

This has been a fun rivalry of late, why would we want to get rid of it. And with Cato being a sophomore, I think Marshall will continue to get better and will be a more impressive win each year.

In this board's history, has any topic fueled more discussion and debate than scheduling?

I've joined in the discussion from time to time and will have another go at this morning.

I like the upcoming schedules as they stand.  And I really like the upcoming 7-game home schedule.  Heck, I'd go for an 8-game home schedule even if it meant adding another non-BCS opponent.

What has become increasingly apparent is that quality of opponent has had little if any negative effect on Peden attendance.  To the contrary, some of the larger crowds have attended for games against FCS opponents or weaker FBS/MAC foes.

Some might argue that more games against more marquee (no dictionary at my SCORE office so I might have blown that spelling) opponents would draw even larger crowds.  But attendance at games against opponents such as East Carolina and Minnesota don't inspire confidence in that possibility.  And as it seems unlikely that we will see a near- to mid-term expansion of Peden, we will continue maxing out crowds at between 25,000 and 26,000.

What also is becoming increasingly apparent: Attendance is fueled largely not by quality of opponent but by victorious seasons and higher expectations for continued success.  And to me at least, recent, current and upcoming scheduling has contributed to increased victories and expectations.

None of the above is profound, and I don't expect widespread agreement from fellow bobcatattackers.  I simply look at Coach Solich's 57-40 overall record, his 34-14 record for the last 3.5 seasons, larger Peden crowds and my own increased excitement on Ohio game days and find myself pleased with current and future scheduling.

Go Bobcats!!

I'm not concerned about the crowds so much as elevating the quality of our opponents.  The knock on our 7-0 record is that except for Penn St we haven't played a "quality" opponent, i.e., an AQ school or a perennially good non-AQ.  If we had played and beaten a Big Least or ACC school instead of NMSU or Norfolk St, we would've gotten more respect and be more in the BCS conversation.  Coach Solich revamped the schedule a few years ago to build the program.  There should come a time, though, when we recognize that the program is built and bring the schedule up a notch.  We don't have to go overboard like Fiami does, but trading adding an AQ school in place of a non-AQ or a 1AA would seem to be in order.

I largely agree with you.  While I wouldn't want to see Ohio swap an already scheduled opponent, beyond those non-conf games already booked, I wouldn't mind seeing another AQ school or two move onto the schedule - IF as time passes Coach Solich remains in the saddle and continues strengthening the program.

I strongly agree re Miami's scheduling. I think it possible if not highly probable that Miami's non-conf scheduling has significantly contributed to the program's slide.  Starting each season with multiple losses has likely removed some of the Redhawks' starch.

I agree with Pataskala, we should try to upgrade our schedule.  I also have no problem dumping the FCS/DI-AA teams in favor of a lesser BE/ACC/B10 or B/12 opponent.  Try for a 1-1.  I notice we have future games at Louisville (2013), Kentucky (2014) and Minnesota (2015).  I remember something about also obtaining 1-1 games with Kansas and Cincy thereafter.  Why not try to upgrade with say a Pitt, Syracuse, Northwestern, Indiana, Duke or whomever.  Our schedule the next 3 years as it currently stands is not what I would consider anything near a murderous schedule.  As a matter of fact, other than the aforementioned 3 away games and Marshall, the rest of the OOC schedule is pretty much a joke.

+1

However for Pitt, we'll have to wait until their AD is fired, or Frank retires.  I truly hope the former happens way before the latter.

I find it interesting that all this is happening at the same time that school up north is dropping MAC opponents in an effort to beef up its strength of schedule.
