It was advertised to be on Game Plan, but the Arkansas-whoever game is showing at the minute.

I paid $25 to watch the game on Game Plan and I'm pissed at the moment.

It appears ESPN3 has got its technical difficulties resolved at the end of the first quarter.

The game is also on STO for those who get it.

The quality of the ESPN3 broadcast is the worst we've had yet. It's always pretty bad, but today it's almost unwatchable. The resolution is about like watching a game through your windshield in a pouring rain, and the action freezes for about 10 seconds on nearly every play.

Is everyone having this problem, or only us?

I'll be that guy who complains about STO...

They keep going to replays and not getting back in time to watch the next play.  Very annoying.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Sounds like you may need a better Internet connection and/or computer - looked fine for me (save for the fact that it was center cut from 16:9 but we've already discussed that here.

Actually, I could use some technical advice. I moved onto a Mac for the second half, and the quality was vastly superior. But there are other extenuating circumstances... For example, the Mac is just a few feet from my modem. My original location was a laptop plugged into my TV, and the results were horrible, but that is quite a bit further from the modem.

Not sure if it's the distance from the modem, or the quality of the cheapy laptop, or some combination.

Could be either, or a combination. ESPN3, like most online streaming services, will automatically adjust your video quality based on both your network connection and the ability of your computer hardware.

Might be worth doing a network speed test at speedtest.net and see if it is significantly different based on location. Also, how new is the Mac/old is the laptop? There are some graphics chips that can do hardware video decoding for Flash video, but primarily newer ones. Stuttering video could be a symptom of too-slow network connection (data not coming in fast enough) or not being able to decode video as fast as it is coming in (graphics card).

Actually the Mac is quite a bit older than the laptop. The Mac is about 6 years old, and the laptop is only about 1 year old, but it is a cheap one. I bought it strictly for streaming video for occasions like today because I wanted to put the video on my living room TV. Maybe it's too low quality for this purpose.

Edit:
I ran the speed test and got this:
For my Mac location (close to the modem): Download 19.29 Mbps, Upload 2.65 Mbps
For my laptop location (far from modem): Download 16.34 Mbps, Upload 2.76 Mbps

Slower, but I don't know if that's significant or not.

That's not a very significant difference in download speed -- 16 Mbps should be more than enough to handle the highest-quality stream. What are the specs on the cheaper living room computer?

It is a long and complicated technical story that anorris can explain more about but basically there is limited bandwidth between ESPN and MLBAM, which actually runs the streaming, and we are not important enough to warrant getting an HD feed.

The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L755:
2.00 GHz Intel Pentium
4.00 GB RAM
64 bit

Can't find a "graphics processor," at least not by that specific name.

Assuming this is the laptop: http://www.buy.com/prod/toshiba-satellite-l755-s5277-15-6... it has Intel's integrated graphics setup, as I expected.

Found some folks discussing issues with poor playback in Flash that were able to resolve it with a driver update for the graphics chipset.  I believe http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&am... would be the correct driver for your system.  Might be worth trying that, then rebooting and giving it a shot.

Do you have trouble with any other sites (YouTube/etc.) or just WatchESPN?

Actually, I don't know. I've used the laptop only for the ESPN3 games. I'll try some other content and see how it looks. And, yes, that's my laptop. Thanks for the link. I'll download the update and see if that helps too.

Many thanks for the help.
