What the...?

Who was the color analyst?

I honestly thought it was a promotion to let a kid read stats during the game.

The halftime interview with Anthony Stacey at BG? I thought it was Rachel Dratch doing an SNL parody of Chris Farley's interviews with famous people.

Rachel: "So, uh Anthony, the uh Antonio Daniels bobbleheads are um, pretty awesome, huh?"

Anthony: "Yeah, he was a great player at BG."

Rachel: "Uh huh." [Long pause]. "Um. Were you mad that he scored more all-time points than you?"

Anthony: "He didn't score more points than me. I'm the leading scorer in BG history."

Rachel: "Oh. Right." [hits self in head and mumbles "idiot"]

Does anyone have video of this? It needs to be on Awful Announcing.

Almost all of her little statements were odd. Oddly phrased, like she had never watched or followed a basketball game before.

I said this via Twitter last night:

Tonight's MAC games highlights how fortunate fans of @OhioMBasketball are when it comes to the quality of broadcasts we're blessed with listening to on the radio and on ESPN3. Kudos to @RussEisenstein @robcwv @MartyBannister and Toni Roesch.

I know someone else pointed this out last week as well. Listening on ESPN3 to two different MAC productions (BG, and then Kent) last night highlights how good we've got it.

I ain't looking to screw that up anytime soon either. Those guys are darn good at what they do. Russ sometimes may ask questions that throw some gas on a fire, but at least he's asking them for a lotta fans that may feel a certain way. Rob as a color man is always good, and our ESPN3 crew with Marty and Tony are pretty darn good. It would be nice to have these guys for a few more years and hope we continue to keep them. I understand it's a business and some guys get promoted but what we got right now is pretty darn good for any program.

That said, if any of em ever leave and we hire Reghi, I will use my Dick Vitale Mute Button on him......

The color analyst was absent most of the game. The few times that she did nervously show up, it was only to present a poorly read stat. I liked how the play by play guy played both roles through a majority of the game. The side line reporter was just as miserable as the color analyst.

I also watched the Ohio Bobcat Wrestling team dominate Northern Illinois the other night on television. I was shocked when the two announcers for the match appeared as though they had barely graduated middle school, let alone high school; however, they both did a great job. The color guy was especially good.

I give these student announcers a lot of leeway. Some are more polished than others, but they are students and they are learning. I did some sports reporting back in the day on WOUB-AM. Some of my College Football Scoreboards with Randy Greene and I were pretty good. My few attempts at play-by-play and color analysis were shall we kindly say, not so good. These students are trying out different things and find out how to improve from game to game, and what they may ultimately be better at. Some will end up being sports reporters in real life, and others will go on to do other things. I just consider it part of the academic learning environment. That being said, the color gal last night has some learning to do. Might have been her first ever attempt at color work. I applaud her for getting into the arena.

I don't give them as much leeway. Not when you are holding an ESPN microphone and everyone in the world has access to your performance as you represent ESPN and the MAC. There's a difference between not being polished and simply not knowing how to read stats. Your first attempt at sports broadcasting should not be on a national stage with an ESPN chyron.

I also worked sports reporting back in the day. I wasn't the greatest, but I certainly didn't sound like a kid just learning to read. I don't want to be "that guy" who criticizes people endlessly (I really don't like to do that and I appreciate this board for not being a board like that), but that level of performance was not only below ESPN standards, it was below many high school radio sports standards.

It's also an insult to the many hard-working aspiring broadcasters around the country who put the extra work in to prepare, rehearse and do an amazing job for their hometown teams yet never get a shot at doing an ESPN game.

This is ESPN3 -- not one of the cable ESPN channels. The way it's setup, it's a great learning tool for students. Granted the color gal under discussion was below even ESPN3 standards, but I suspect she'll either be much better the next time, or have decided that she wants to pursue other goals in college.

I hear one of those student announcers who did the Ohio/NIU dual shaves just twice a month.

Glad you caught the match, Connor Mills is a freshman, he's a must-listen color commentator should you ever catch an Ohio Wrestling broadcast.
