Just so I'm clear ....

Ohio lost by 25 to a team that is 3-6 in the MAC.

That game was almost a carbon copy of the BG game, minus all the injuries and we got a little better defensively against BG.

20-56 from the field
3-20 from three
7-16 from the FT line
17 TOs

Wow....I get they are student reporters, but man....if you cover this team on a regular basis..how do you base an entire CMU preview article trying to figure out why James Gollon isn't averaging double-figures? Umm....because he shouldn't be playing more than 5-8 minutes per game and this isn't HS basketball in Wisconsin. #GoodLord #13Months

Indeed - I'm trying to coach the growing group of angry haters on here into being actual supporters of our program, and talking more about basketball itself. It appears that I'm failing miserably. Perhaps I should come up with some hokey hashtag to make myself look like I'm smart and get some people to come back from the dark side.

Have to disagree on Golon. He brings energy which we badly need. He wants to drive to the hoop but too many of his teammates are in his way. He's good for points every time he drives and shoots because he doesn't miss from the line. For anyone who has played on a school team and been in the position of looking over your shoulder to see if someone is at the scorer's table ready to take your place, it's very difficult to play well and gain confidence. Play the kid more.

I guess that's better than talking about how the hell Ohio lost by 25 at a team that is 3-6 in the MAC?

Maybe?

ahhhh ... who are we kidding. There's really nothing worth writing about with this team right now.

Alan, you are correct about Gollon. He has been thrown into the thick of things after rehabbing through 2 major surgeries this past year, and he is out there giving his all to help his team. With Friday's injuries to Dartis, Mickle, and Butler, his minutes are going to be going up. Sadly there are too many people on this forum who look at collegiate athletics with little appreciation for what it takes to successfully represent your school at this level. Having been there, and done that, I know what these coach's and kids are going through, and there are not any Bobcats anyplace who feel as bad as everyone around this program these days. I watch lots of practice, and our staff and our players are getting after it to try to get things turned around and heading in the right direction. Easy to bail out and bitch and moan when the sh## hits the fan. I am proud of the way these kids have dealt with all the bad cards they have been dealt. With the loss of more starters at BG, things will certainly not get easier. Our kids need and could use our support during times like this much more than when things are going well! Hashtag that.

Agree doubledribble. A few on this message board will never be satisfied. It is like they think these players/staff are losing on purpose. Many posters are the same on the football message board. Injuries are part of athletics. Most fans will agree that if Ohio would have been injury free this season, they would be in much better shape going into the last few weeks of the year.

Injuries are a HUGE part of what's wrong this year. No question about it.

And I don't think anyone is insinuating players/coaches are losing on purpose. That's just an absurd statement to even think.

But what is there to be satisfied with in terms of hoops the last four years? Injuries have totally derailed Saul's plans ....

But bottom line, Ohio is dead last in the MAC this year. Let that sink in.

Even on off seasons .... Ohio hasn't been this bad.

We are in dark days in terms of basketball right now.

But yes .... let's be satisfied. Kool-aid is served! Drink up!

I appreciate your perspective very much. Everyone has opinions, just as everyone has a belly button, but some people’s opinions on any particular topic count more than others. On this topic, I’ll take you assessment over those of practically anyone else on this board. Pleases keep commenting on this subject that you have great experience and expertise in.

I interpreted this story way differently. The author did a good job of throwing out what the problem with the team is (offensive woes, practice translating to games, etc.) and gave Jimmy G's double figures as an example of what the offense could be like. I didn't think he was trying to say Jimmy G is a constant or consistent double digit guy.

Theoretically he could be. He's probably the best shooter on the team other than an injury free Jordan Dartis. I'd like to see him in the game more during tight situations simply for outside shooting and free throw capabilities.

As a fan who attends no practices I'm wondering if practices have been scaled back if for no other reason than to allow the players to rest up and heal some between games. Spend your energy in games and take it a little easy on days in between games. Maybe not ideal in a typical season, but perhaps necessary this season for Ohio. Has this been the case this season?

It's been a topic every week. less effective practices due to lack of healthy bodies.

Good deal Pete. We will be there as well! This is when our program needs support...when things are not going as well as we expect and as well as our coaches and kids expect.
BShot44, To continue to stand with our programs does not mean that we are only drinking green kool-aid or that we are satisfied with how things are going. My drinks are not even green! Understand the process of building a winning, and respected college program. Lots of moving parts....new recruiting class every year, bigger stronger faster kids pushing their bodies to the limits every day, with many resulting in serious injuries that they may very well take with them to graduation and beyond. If our players are willing to put in the time, effort and hard work, then I am willing to enjoy the process of following programs that are doing things the right way, and realize that all goals may not be reached in the time frame that we are thinking of. Many things happen that can throw the process off track or off schedule. The past two years all you have to do is look at the X-rays and MRI's of the kids that we were counting on to lead us to the top of the league to see a major factor to what is happening. Is this an "excuse" ? No, it is reality, and it is something that happens to many teams and many programs.
Hopefully our administration has an understanding of the difficult journey that is building and maintaining athletic programs at or near the competitive top of our league If they do, then we will likely see "#extension" versus
"#14 months"

Listen, we have to support our program, but we do not have to support mediocrity. We have the worst recruiting class on paper this year, our players are not improving. If Saul does not show that he can lead us to the tournament, there will be a lot of guys that believe that they can, we will just need to find one that can get it done. We ALL support the program, some of us have been critical, just like a loving parent, boss or sibling would do. Your claims are like saying that someone doesn't love their child because they punished he or she for not doing his or her school work. Some of us see that the program is regressing and we need to right the ship. We have had numerous injuries this year but that does not nullify the fact that we are being out recruited every year. Solich gets out recruited every year but he has a system where he develops his players and they do enough to keep him employed. On the basketball side of things, there is a lot of stagnation. We love the program, we don't worship Saul. Hopefully, Saul can save his job, but we should not pay a competitive wage for mediocrity. We know that other schools in the conference have better athletes and we don't even strategize on defense to put teams in difficult positions. How can we win if we don't have the best players or no strategies to overcome our short comings? We have pushed certain narratives like our players have higher basketball IQ's or that Saul is the smartest coach in the league and none of these narratives have proven to be true. 14 months is what Saul has, after that we would put he and our program at a disadvantage. If we give him anything less than a three year extension, that might make our recruiting even worst because their is no commitment and if we give him four years and he continues to flounder, we will have a huge payout and a complete rehab on our hands, because the new coach may find his recruits unsuitable to win the MAC with. Win or go home. This is a tee ball league, he makes over a half million dollars.

Nobody despises to lose more than I do. That's got me into trouble over the years, but it also made a man of mediocre ability into a pretty good coach. Woody Hayes
