Gareri to Redshirt?

I noticed at last night's game that A. J. wasn't dressed again. We all know that he missed several games at the beginning of the season and has seen limited playing time in the last 6 weeks. Does anyone know if there are plans to try to get a medical redshirt for him as well or has he exceeded the amount of playing time in order for that to happen?

I was thinking the same thing about him. If he redshirts that would really fill up that freshman class with guys who are 4 or 5 men. Hopefully that wouldn't hurt us in the long run recruiting guards. You would have Gareri, BVP, Springs and McMurray with a 3 in Murrell.

As for AJ, he's played in 10 games this year and his first game was the MAC opener against CMU. Here are the NCAA rules on the matter:

Dates of competition that are exempted (e.g., alumni contests, foreign team in the United States) from the maximum permissible number of contests or dates of competition shall count toward the number of contests or dates in which the student-athlete has participated and the number of scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition in the season, except for scrimmages and exhibition contests that are speci cally identi ed as such in the sport�s Bylaw 17 playing and practice season regulations. Scrimmages and exhibition contests that are not exempted from the maximum permissible number of contests or dates of competition may be excluded from the calculation only if they are identi ed as such in the sport�s Bylaw 17 playing and practice season regula- tions; and

(d) In individual sports, the injury or illness occurs when the student-athlete has not participated in more than three dates of competition or 30 percent (whichever number is greater) of the maximum permissible number of dates of competition as set forth in Bylaw 17 plus one date for a conference championship (e.g., gymnas-tics: 13+1=14, wrestling: 16+1=17), regardless of whether the team participates in the conference champion- ship, provided the institution is a member of a conference and the conference holds a championship event in the applicable sport. Dates of competition that are exempted per Bylaw 17 (e.g., alumni contests, foreign team in the United States) from the maximum permissible number of dates of competition do not count toward the number of dates in which the student-athlete has participated.

If the important part of the rule is 30 percent of games, it's going to be tough to argue his case if he's played 10 of 27 games so far.

Did Gareri actually play @ WMU? The stat sheet shows him with 1 rebound in 0 minutes played.

If Ohio played 33 games, then 10 played would be at right about 30 percent. For that to happen, though, Ohio would have to win two in the MAC tournament.
