In reading this article, this kid only signed his financial aid papers. This in turn allowed him to explore other schools if his coach were to ever leave for another job, get fired due to losing, or fired for NCAA Violations. It seems to me that this is a great way to counteract a move like this. Thoughts?

Like everything else in this whole FBI, NCAA, College athletics discussion....it applies to about 150 athletes out of 4500 in D1 only. What is that? Like less than .05%? All the athletes that do not sign the NLI are not guaranteed a spot. When a coach has to fill out a roster he gets a verbal then a written commit. In basketball, unlike football, once a coach gets a verbal MOST other coaches get off him and move on to find another get that fills their bill. Thankfully most coaches still respect that. Football gets changes right up to the minute early signings occur.

All of this in hoops fall on that small per cent of participants whose likeness actually would mean something. Less than 1 % of those kids would be a household name to the point that could make money on their likeness and name locally or nationally. Can you imagine DJ Cooper in the locker room asking the 2010 and 2012 teams to boycott the NCAA because he felt his name was worth something and he should be reimbursed for it's use. Not going to happen for the rest of those kids who spend their lives dreaming of playing in an NCAA tournament and working through years of Summer ball just to get a D1 offer and get college paid for... then put the time in to win a spot. Can't imagine Devo, Walt, IVo, Nick saying..."sure we believe in you Coop, we know you need and deserve a new car and we are willing to not play in the tournament". That is what is driving this we should pay these guys. AB is not going to get offers to do commercials for Larry's Realty, Taylor Autos or McDonalds of Athens. Can't imagine the harmony in the locker rooms across the NCAA when the 1% start demanding their teamies to stand up for them. Reality sucks but these guys likeness' are really NOT that important.

The less than 1 % that you are thinking this would benefit are the only ones this would work for, not signing an NLI means that athlete would be replaced by one that commits and signs when the November signing day comes. Otherwise, coaches are gonna find another commit that actually commits to a roster spot. Just my opinion.

I was meaning for for these guys to not sign LOI's out of the gate, but rather wait to make sure their coach is still there in some way, shape, or form.

As to the FBI, can't blame the kid. But what I was going for is when a coaching change happens.

I think that the coaching changes will be addressed this year in NCAA rulings... there has been some discussion on this subject.
