Anyone know the plays/calls/mis-calls that led to this? That's not a good look.

I'd be interested to hear the post game interviews, or at least read them. Does Akron do an 'on-demand' for their broadcast work like Ohio does?

He admitted after the game that he did it to make a statement for his players. They had already lost the game. He wanted to go out in a blaze of glory. I love it when he sticks out his lower lip like a 2-year-old.

Love this. Love it. Too bad he's at Akron and I can't root for him anymore.

Can somebody hit a pull up jumper for me?.....

The whole thing was planned and orchestrated. Watch Dustin as JG starts walking across the floor - he says something to the coach next to him then casually gets up and crosses the floor. Whey the third official felt the need to touch Groce or his player is beyond me. Akron will be very tough to play in a year or two.

If Buffalo struggled with Akron, I don't like their chances of going very far in the dance. Depends on how the brackets are of course. An unfavorable matchup in the first game could send them home early.

Yup. He's not even really giving resistance to Ivey's gentle ushering back to the bench.

Anybody else remember when Tom Penders of George Washington did it in the Convo while the ball was in play?

Though I loved the Sweet 16 run, this is one aspect of Groce that I never liked -- the orchestrated emotion. Fake Emotion is something like Fake Monroe in my book. I prefer the real stuff!

Orchestrated is just the opposite of fake - it's done for a reason. I'll take Groce "fake" or not over any coach we've had since Danny (with all due respect to Billy).

No, orchestrated emotion is fake emotion by definition. If you are reacting in a natural way because you are truly angry that's real. The minute you start to "enhance" your emotion with an ulterior motive you are in the land of the fake. I didn't say I didn't like the way JG coaches. I said that this was one aspect of his personality that I was never comfortable with. Every coach does this sometimes and uses "enhanced emotion" for an effect. Groce was an is a little overboard with it, IMHO.

Hmmm .... ok . Fake Stroll across the court? Coach Goce has always had the fire. Loved his tenure here , that is over . If you’re impressed with histrionics , great . I’m over it , not exactly how that works for a team or the public at this point in the season. Our season , with all it’s promise , went south, and to see how this team pulled out the last part has been rather inspiring - as always,, proud to be a Bobcat ...see you in Cleveland ;)

Fake news is not done "for a reason"? I beg to differ.

Try telling John that his emotion during a game is fake, and you’d probably be eating your dentures. One thing that you can not deny of John and that is his emotion, intensity and passion are real.

The way I look at it the Bulls generally have a sixth man at home and Mr. Gross felt the need to express that.

He admitted it was fake in the postgame radio interview.

It's clear to me that John went onto the court with every intention of getting thrown out. You can see him say something to Dustin which I assume was that he was going out there, and he did it when the game was out of reach. Arkley said on Twitter that he doesn't think that sort of thing should be celebrated. I don't know. If the end justifies the means, then it's okay with me, the end probably being a strong start tomorrow night against Kent and into the tournament with energy. And I'm even a referee. We've seen this from John before. I remember specifically the BG game in 2012. He took a T in the second half while it was close and then we go on a big run to win it.

And then there is the time that Danny stormed the court years ago at BG, grabbed the ball and banged it on the floor, got t'd up and pulled the team off the floor. We had a bunch of recent graduates up there for the game and I believe SBH was in the house too.

Anyway, whether you define it as fake or not, it was clearly an orchestrated/calculated/planned move on his part. Let's see if it has any effect going forward.

How is this controversial in the slightest? It's Coaching 101, and you see it in all team sports.

Eh. You don't see coaches walk across the field of play all the time except in baseball, where it's oddly celebrated (although replay has killed that element of the game).

There can be real safety concerns for officials. That official doesn't know it's calculated. He might think Groce is going to knock him out and react accordingly.

I think we all know the rule in real life that you don't act like you're going to get into a fight unless you're willing to actually get into a fight. Menacing an official in this manner is the same way. If you're going to go running at a grown man screaming, be prepared for things to go sideways at some point.

This could've escalated quickly. Akron's or Buffalo's players could've seen this theater as real and started a brawl. An Akron player could've gone at an official. So many stupid things can happen when you go running out onto the floor. Yell all you want from the bench. When you go running onto a floor, you're just inviting a brawl.

My favorite memory of this tactic was in a high school game - the infamous Barberton Magics vs. Firestone at Firestone. Keith Dambrot (yes, that one) had the ball when Barberton coach Jack Greynolds stormed on the court and took it from him.
To give you an idea of how powerful Greynolds was, the refs listened to his complaint, asked him to return to the bench, gave the ball back to Dambrot and restarted play...with no technical.
