Just when you thought all of the coaching dominoes had fallen. If the former nearby Romulus High School coach who made good at Buffalo hadn't taken the job with the Crimson Tide, who knows Nate Oats might be in the mix?

Looks like Michigan is going with Jawan Howard so it shouldn't have too much of a ripple effect. Another program hiring a famous alum with no college experience (not even that much pro experience).

So a bunch of fat, middle-aged white dudes disapprove? While I can't say I disagree (I fit in the aforementioned demographic), what we think doesn't really matter if Howard can recruit anywhere close to Penny Hardaway. If it excites top-level recruits, then it starts to look like a savvy hire.

The track record of former stars coaching at their alma maters is pretty bad, but if Howard can bring in great players, he's very likely to have success.

First off,only one of the Michigan fans I know is white.
They also range in age from 20's to dinosaurs like me.

The biggest concern they have is his being able to handle head coaching responsibilities including recruiting.

What's funny is that these guys aren't happy with Howard,but a couple of them were pushing for Chris Webber.

This was my first reaction to the news. If it goes as well early on as it seems to be going at Memphis with Penny, I'd have to think this is a really good hire. As usual, time (and results) will tell.

I'm actually more optimistic Howard will do well at Michigan than I am about Beilein in Cleveland.

Oh, I don't think anyone thinks Beilein will be successful with the Cavs. Gilbert's meddling and pettiness means apart from the luck of having LeBron James twice, he's created the Knicks of the Midwest. It's really, really hard to win with that level of incompetence at the top, especially if that incompetence needs to have its hands in every corner of the operation and puts ego above organizational competence.

I think people are just happy that a guy who grinded for so long and worked his way up and has the respect of almost everybody in that profession got the chance to try to coach at the NBA level. His age and his lack of flash and self-promotion really was working against him ever getting this opportunity despite being a truly innovative coach who treats his players with respect and develops talent as well as anyone.

He's going to get paid. He's going to get the opportunity to coach at the highest level. It's just a feel-good story. Even Michigan fans seem genuinely happy for him. It feels like if somehow Frank Beamer had gotten a crack at the NFL with some second-rate franchise.

Michigan will lock down Detroit, Flint, etc. with this hire. And you can be sure that Webber and Rose will be active in the recruiting process - as able and legal.

I laughed when I read this. Locking down those is like locking down Chicago. Illinois, Depaul, Northwestern, UIC. None can do it because it can't be done. Detroit, Flint and MI kids will go where their allegiances lie. If the "Flintstones" are their idols and legends in their neighborhood they will go to Michigan State. Same with Detroit. They may end up in Alabama if Oates visits his roots. "Locking down" the borders is highly over rated anyway. If you fill a need a University has and fit their system that is great. If not, then just getting a kid because he is in the borders is not always the best choice. Likewise a kid leaving for another locale is not always a loss. Michigan has been doing well with recruits from Ohio and Indiana the last decade moreso than their homegrown talent.

I'm sorry but this is absolute horsesh*t. I'll give Penny Hardaway credit because he started his coaching career in junior high, high school and AAU. He probably understands the recruiting process a little bit and knew exactly how to recruit to Memphis.

But what has Howard, Rose or Webber done to make you think they'll "clean up?" Howard has benefited from being connected to the NBA for 20+ years, but how does that translate to college? Rose and Webber have been NBA analysts, but how does that translate to college? If a recruit simply signs with Michigan because those three have played in the NBA and not their actual coaching acumen, those kids will be in for a world of disappointment.

And for all intents and purposes, Webber hated/hates what the NCAA stood for. He won't help Michigan make more money when he still hasn't came out and publicly apologized for infractions that happened while he was in school.

Here's a quote from Rose:

"The one thing that we both know is his success turning around the University of Michigan is first and foremost about him and about the players that he�s going to influence."

Umm what? Turning around? John Beilein turned Michigan around. There is nothing to turn around. Michigan hasn't been at this high of a level since you left school.

Who knows, maybe Howard will end up being good. But to say this is such a great hire for Michigan just because his name is Juwan Howard is silly.

I'm going to go out on the limb and say being an assistant coach under Eric Spoelstra and learning from Pat Riley for half a decade is more valuable to being a basketball coach at any level than coaching junior high kids.

AAU? Yeah. That translates.

Just picking a nit. Sometimes we overvalue "working your way up the ladder." Some rungs are so lowly they really don't mean much.And some people just naturally have the skillset to slide into big-time roles.

We'll see.

Idk why Jalen Rose has been bashing Michigan and acting like Juwan will bring peace to Michigan, but Beilein has been the best thing to happen to Michigan basketball in a long while (bonus points that it was done clean and without Ed Martin). Hopefully Howard realizes that and keeps a critical core of Beilein's staff. I will laugh hard if he puts Michigan on probation one day because it would almost be poetic, but am intrigued by the hire nonetheless.

As to locking down the big cities in Michigan, if he can go toe-to-toe like Beilein was doing down the stretch with Izzo and go into Ohio like Beilein did, then Michigan will be fine. Watching Michigan and MSU go into the midwest and build a team has been impressive the last few years.

That's a really good one.

Hoiberg is weird. You would've never guessed he came from the NBA. He so naturally fit into the college game. Ames loved him in a way that you usually only see for the absolute legends of the game.

But I thought Brad Stevens would be a college lifer, too, and he's done splendidly in the NBA, outside of Kyrie Irving grabbing the wheel and careening the bus into the side of the mountain for one season.

Good call. Hadn't thought about him. I think you'd have to call him a big success. Another one that has had some success is Dan D'Antoni at Marshall although he's a little different than the type I was referring to.

Completely unrelated but the menton of all the fab 5 guys got me thinking how close we will get to having a fab 5 of our own and strting 5 freshmen this coming season? It would likely mean Dartis injured, and I have to assume Preston will have a spot but if things break a certain way maybe we will see it for a game or 2.
