Even without Coleman, Yahoo says "Ohio is a slight favorite in wide-open league":

Yikes.

I see two guys who can be counted on in Cooper and Freeman, and 9 question marks.

A lot is going to have to go right.

Has the potential to be a very fun team to watch though, even if there are growing pains along the way.

Cooper-Best passer in the MAC
Washington-Best athlete in the MAC
Freeman-Best shooter in the MAC

Anytime you get three talents like that, you are going to get some hype.  Cooper and Washington are both 1st team All-MAC talents, period.

We bring back key role players in Keely and Sayles.  Everyone else is a pretty big question, but even with the loss of Bassett and the guy I was hoping would take some of his production (Coleman), along with KVK, this team is still the favorite in the MAC.  There is just too much talent returning from a team that played better then anyone down the stretch last year.

I've seen crazier things happen.

We're not world-beaters at this stage.  But to say that we have 9 question marks seems a little bit off.

I wonder how much KVK will be missed.  He was very solid.

I think with Cooper and Washington we have two first team all-MAC players. Throw in Freeman the MAC's best 3 point shooter and that three weapons that teams have to account for.  Sayles, Keely and Baltic are solid role players.  They saw action last March and will be far better coming off that experience as Groce wasn't afraid to put them on the floor in key situations late last year. Add in a group of talented freshman to help out and we got a nice roster.  We know we got guys who can play in big games. The rest of the MAC hasn't gone thru what Ohio did last year. Yes, Bassett and Coleman are big losses along with KVK. But I figure Keely and Baltic along with Washington give Groce a very strong frontcourt to go with Cooper and Freeman in the backcourt.  Sayles defense at the three gives us a solid six man unit plus our talented recruiting class behind them.  Leadership with Cooper, Freeman, Sayles and Washington is the X factor that we have. This team may have better chemistry this year and more focus from the beginning of the season.

If we pass the ball like we did down the stretch and in the tourney I think we will be very, very good.  Not sure how you could leave off Washington in the "counted on" category.  I think that Keely is a lot less of a question mark than you seem to think.  And are our question marks any bigger than those of any other team in the MAC?

Kent State lost Tyree Evans, Chris Singleton, Mike McKee, Brandon Parks, and Anthony Simpson.  Akron loses Chris McKnight, Humpty Hitchens,  Jimmy Conyers, and Darryl Roberts.   Fiami lost their most important player in Kenny Hayes as well as Adam Fletcher.  Buffalo lost their top 5 scorers. Their returning players averaged 19 points per game total.  BG lost all their size and 3 of their top 4 rebounders.

I don't think that we can necessarily rely on Washington as a sure-fire contributor this year.  Up until his suspension last season, Washington has been up and down throughout his career, following the occassional big game up with a game where he seems to disappear for 40 minutes.  While I certainly think (and hope) Washington is capable of repeating the consistency he displayed down the stretch, I tend to agree with Ohio69 that he isn't in the "sure thing" category entering 2010-11.

I agree with this. To call him a first-team All-MAC player is a bit too much praise. Not saying he can't or won't be - he definitely has the talent.

The thing that concerns me about the team is a lack of a player to count on for scoring. We have a lot of guys who can contribute points some times, but no one who can be counted on every single game. Bassett or Coleman or even Kinney probably could have been that. If we need a basket, I suppose Cooper is the most likely go-to player, but he still is a much better passer than scorer. DW is super athletic, but can you really post him up and let him go to work? I haven't seen too much of that. Freeman isn't going to create too many of his own shots. I'm kind of hoping one of the new guys will fill a big scoring role. But it is true that is a pretty small question mark compared to what a lot of MAC teams have right now.

We obviously don't seem as strong on paper as we would have without departures, but in the MAC we have to be the top choice going into the season.

I really hope its the latter. Seemed like he did a lot of growing up in the MAC Tournament and NCAA games. We'll have to wait and see I guess though. Can we put a deadline on this when we should see it by? Like if he's not doing _____ by the _______ game we'll know? Personally, I think he'll have a monster year, but its wishful thinking.

DeVaughn was consistently very good after returning from his suspension.   It definitely seemed like a wakeup call to him because it didn't seem like it was just effort. It was smart effort.   I'm going on record and saying that he is going to have a huge senior season.

I know losing Coleman and Bassett are big losses but I have a feeling that our freshman, particularly Ricardo Johnson and Nick Kellogg are going contribute quite a bit this year.  I know we've learned to temper our expectations because we've pooped the bed so many times but I have a good feeling about this team.

The old cliche is that the most improvement a college basketball player exhibits is between his freshman and sophomore years.  If that proves true we are in great shape.

I've said this before re: Washington- if Cooper is MAC MVP it means we had a good season, if DW is MAC MVP it means we're probably on our way to the sweet 16. Even with AB and DJ Jazzy Jeff gone at guard I feel good about the freshmen coming in. If. DW can dominate down low our guards will be able to do some real damage, and vice versa.

The good thing is I think the bad apples are no longer with the team. I know Washington has had his team rules issues, but I have not heard a peep out of any of the other returnees regarding behavior/grades issues. We don't know too much about the freshmen, but from what I do know, they should be focused on winning basketball. Ricardo has the reputation of being a gym rat. Wasn't Hall an honor student in high school? I can't imagine Nick being getting into any trouble knowing who his dad is and having a big brother on the team with him. I don't really know much about Ethan.

Not that it's necessarily any huge big deal, but Devaughn got a disorderly conduct at an Uptown bar in mid-May of this year. That would be after he "grew up" and "turned the corner" or whatever. To me, he has not proven any real consistency, but hopefully he'll shut me up with a monster season and smooth sailing and wearing a cap and gown.

This was still while under the influence of Bassett. Now that Mr Basset AND Mr Coleman are gone there is little for Mr Washington to do but play basketball and realize the path those fools took is not the path he wants to follow.

As long as we aren't called "It", I'm good with the ranking. I think we definitely return the strongest returning team in the MAC and have incoming freshman that will contribute. Our season will definitely depend on the play of DVW. If we get the DVW that we saw during the 2nd half stretch of the season, we're going to be in a pretty good spot.

Last year:  2nd in MAC in 3-pt shot defense, 2nd in offensive rebounds. That'll work.

I tend to believe this team will go as far as REBOUNDING takes it.  I'm not sure we have any really big dominant inside player to consistently get us the ball.  May be ok in MAC play but not much more.

For rebounding purposes, we might be forgetting about Alex Kellogg. I know we've had some transfer issues(Johnnie Jackson), however he still comes from a Big East school(albeit Providence), and might really step it up.

And put us on his back for the MAC tourney and Georgetown win.
