Tied with Miami (FL), Utah State, and Xavier with 4 votes apiece, one vote behind UCLA, and ahead of Dayton (3 votes), Old Dominion (2 votes), Georgia Tech, New Mexico, and Wofford (1 vote each).

It is amazing how quickly respect came for Ohio and the MAC after winning the first round game in the NCAA!

Yes! My excitement for this coming season is in overdrive. I'll always cherish the Georgetown game but I can't help but get that itch that more is possible with this team. I'm just enjoying the moment.

If only football can get some votes too. Only about 15 schools have votes in both the AP football and basketball polls. That would be pretty impressive as it was last season to make the NCAA second round and a bowl game. Furthers the image of Ohio as a top sports school by having both basketball and football rolling much like it did for Utah.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086

I think its more of a tribute to last years run.  How high would we have been with Bassett, Coleman and Alex Kellogg still around.  top 25? We are not a top 50 team without Bassett.  Probably not a top 75 team either. Likely between 75-100 if we get good production from the freshmen Kellogg and Johnson.   We are still a young team that was a 9 seed last year. Bassett was the primary reason for the post season run.  We may still win in a down MAC, but to have us get 4 top 25 votes is not realistic. Its from folks who saw us last March and didn't research what we lost from that team.   Its puts a target on this team which I think is a bit unfair as they are still very young and having to go without Bassett, Coleman, Kinney and Alex Kellogg who left the program. That's a lot of talent to replace without taking a step back let alone improving into a top 50 team.

Only one of the names you mentioned us losing had something to do with our run last year, and we only lost one other player you didn't mention from our run.

Between KVK and Bassett we lose:
Roughly 35% of minutes played during the run.
33% of the rebounding from our run.
42% of the scoring from our run.

If you match those numbers up against other tourney and MAC teams, we are in good shape.  Losing Kellogg and Coleman, two guys we expected could possibly be the key replacements to KVK and Bassett hurts, no doubt, but we still have the key pieces in place that had us excited even after Bassett left...  Keely and Ivo's improvements are going to give us a deeper frontcourt then last year.  Based on the track record of Groce's recruits, I'm confident we can expect some production out of our freshman for this year.

We've got a ton of home games right off the bat.  Those are great games to get us geared up for some of the bigger tests further into our OOC play and of course MAC play.  We've got questions to answer like every other team in the nation...  I don't think we've got as many or as serious questions though...  There is no reason we can't be a top 50 team this year.

I agree.  I think the main thing was how soundly we won that game.  Also, only losing 2 players off the team that played in that game and having a nice recruiting class probably doesnt hurt!

I'm with Ohiobobcatjohn.  But, I'm excited nonetheless.  If we can keep Groce a few more seasons and he can keep recruiting like he has been, its only gonna get better....  Good times folks.  Good times.

Can somebody hit a pull up jumper for me?.....

I don't hear a lot of people mentioning either of these guys but I think they are going to be much more of a factor this year than last.  Keely is going to be a load down low.

Agree. Think Miami's Mavunga's improvement from freshman to soph seasons.

Assuming we take care of business like we should and win the first 4 games at home, hopefully in convincing fashion...while the teams in front of us drop a game or 2, we could be well into the 30s by the time we meet Kansas.  But most every time I say or think anything to the effect of "If we do this simple task, I will be excited"...I am dealt a swift kick to the nuts.

Oakland is going to be a tough game.  They've got a potential NBA draft pick in 6' 11" senior center Keith Benson, who could be a major matchup problem for us in the post.  Fortunately they lost two 4 year starters from last year's tournament team, including their starting PG, creating our own potential matchup advantage.

I agree with oubobcatjohn. I don't have any expectations for this season. Let's see where we are in March. Someone earlier said we would be ranked 30th by the time we play Kansas. I want to take some of your happy pills.

Do you want some of my reading pills too?  It is amazing how in just 2 posts, a quote of...

"If we take care of business and win the first 4 games at home, hopefully in convincing fashion, we COULD be ranked into the 30s by the time we play Kansas" turns into "We WILL be ranked 30th when we play Kansas."

If we are still undefeated when we take on Kansas, which we will be favored in each of the 4 games before Kansas, I guarentee we will be into the 30s.

Agreed...

I don't think it's too unreasonable to jump a couple spots into the 30's if we are 4-0.  I see no reason we shouldn't be 4-0 either...  Yes, Oakland won't be easy, but we aren't easy either at home.

Apparently our votes all came from a single, questionable voter:

Questionable according to whom?

Here are some teams that were in the final rankings last year:

#2 Butler
#13 Northern Iowa
#14 Xavier
#16 New Mexico
#17 Cornell
#19 St. Mary's
#22 BYU
#23 Gonzaga

ORV: Murray State, Dayton, ODU

Looks to me like the other guys might be the questionable voters.

Even if it is coming from just 1 guy...That guy has put us on the list, and each week when voters go to vote and the teams they had near the bottom of their top 25 lose, their gonna glance at who is in other receiving votes and see what they're doing.

I dunno...I think it's hard to argue that as of today we deserve to be ranked ahead of UNC or Kentucky.  I'll take the publicity anyway we can get it, though.

It was pretty hard to argue last year as well when UNC was picked #4 in the preseason.  Didn't look so crazy after the season.

I guess you are looking at the world through rose colored glasses, everything is rosie now! Our schedule is weak. MAC teams never get that much respect in the polls, especially early in the year. IF we beat Kansas, and if Kansas in not like the UNC team we beat years ago that wasn't very good, and start the year at 10-0, MAYBE we get a little respect. Anyone is crazy to think that simply going 4-0 against Delaware, Oakland, Texas A&M School of Podiatry and Valpo merits a top 30 ranking.
