CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Mid-American Conference has announced a 34-game men's and women's basketball league television package produced and distributed by the new home for MAC basketball -- SportsTime Ohio (STO). The 34 scheduled games are part of the largest men's and women's television package in league history. In addition, there will be at least 13 other men's basketball games that are scheduled to be televised on ESPN's Family of Networks (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3.com) - the conference's most extensive national cable package ever.

The men's basketball television schedule will begin on Tuesday, November 16 as Central Michigan battles Hawaii at 4 a.m. ET as part of ESPN's College Hoops Tip-off marathon. STO's coverage of the MAC will begin on Wednesday November 24 as Akron hosts Cleveland State and will culminate with quarterfinals (STO), semifinals (STO) and Championship game (ESPN2, 6 p.m. ET) coverage of the FirstEnergy MAC Men's Basketball Tournament on March 10-12.

Michael Reghi will be joined by MAC Hall of Famer and former Toledo and Philadelphia 76ers standout Steve Mix as talent for the MAC men's basketball SportsTime Ohio package. STO's Mike Cairns will provide the play-by-play for the women's broadcasts with the analyst role to be determined.

The STO women's basketball television schedule begins on Saturday, January 8 as Ohio travels to Akron for a Noon tip and contains eight regular-season telecasts in addition to the MAC Women's Basketball Tournament semifinals (March 11, Noon/2:30 p.m. ET) and championship game (March 12, 1 p.m. ET) telecast.

The majority of STO's men's and women's basketball productions will be distributed in high definition - a first for the league's regional television package.

Games will also be available in the MAC footprint via Comcast Michigan (channel 900), Comcast Indiana (channel 81) and Comcast Sports Net Chicago. Check your local listings for game times and local availability. Games will also be available via STO in the Buffalo market on DirecTV (channel 662) and Dish Network (channel 431) as Buffalo is part of STO's normal distribution footprint.

So much promise, too much akron and toledo. At least we still have Russ and Rob on the webcast.

So the defending league champion and a team that won a game in the ncaa tourney has the fewest # of games on STO?  lol...I guess there is still a possibility we pick up a couple more games based on their 21-Day advance selection games.  On those particular dates we play @CMU (2/2) and @Buffalo(2/15).  Still though, pretty weak.

I really would like to know the theory that the MAC uses in scheduling TV games for hoop and football.

Would I be off the mark to sugges that it's geared toward presenting not the best possible product?

I really... really... hope people in the Convo are raising holy hell about this... this is absolutely unacceptable.... what a complete joke.  This is worse than the football TV debacle featuring EMU and Akron all over the place... The only team that has national recognition this year (not saying we're the only recognizable team, but we're definitely the most relevant after last year's run) has the fewest amount of games?!  You have got to be kidding me.  Is it possible the current administration can ruin basketball the way Chryst did football?  They're giving it a hell of a shot with TV packages like this... I'm furious over this....

They've decided they want to buck the trends set forth by networks like CBS and ESPN.  The model of showing the best product is simply outdated.  Their new plan is to broadcast as many bad games as they possibly can.  After a couple seasons, when the audiences opinion of MAC basketball are significantly lower than they already are, they will start scheduling the good games for TV and everyone will think the MAC is suddenly much improved.

Anyway, is FSN still broadcasting any MAC games?  If so, I would assume that would probably be why the numbers are so weird (but in the release it says STO will be broadcasting MAC quarter's and semi's).

Just for comparisons sake, here's the number of STO games with Yahoo's projected finish:

East:
1.  Ohio       (1)
2.  Kent St   (5)
3.  Akron     (7)
4.  Fiami     (4)
5.  BGSU    (3)
6.  Buffalo   (3)

West:
1.  Ball St   (2)
2.  CMU     (2)
3.  EMU     (1)
4.  WMU    (2)
5.  NIU       (1)
6.  Toledo  (2)

The heavy Kent and Akron presence is expected, but it just seems odd.  I mean wouldn't a Jan 12th game of Ohio @ Akron be a little bit better than WMU @ Balls?  Or Akron @ Ohio instead of Kent @ BUGS on March 1st?  I have a feeling our game with CMU will probably end up getting picked up.  Just dumb though.

I agree.  So confused right now as to how these games are assigned.  As much as I want to see every game, STO should be showing more than 1 men's game.  Not to mention the fact that the Cats are defending champs and have a fairly entertaining product to watch, no matter if you root for OU or not.

I think if OU Didn't Know did the # of games broadcast as it pertains to distance from STO headquarters (1333 Lakeside Avenue,  Cleveland, OH 44114), it would make a little more sense. Shame, though. Especially since the home games are televised. I'd rather them broadcast a tough to travel to mid-week game.

Ask and you shall receive.  Mileage from STO headquarters to school's arena, total games, and home games (in parenthesis):

East:
1.  Ohio        220    1    (1)
2.  Kent St      31    5    (3)
3.  Akron        41    7    (5)
4.  Fiami       261    4    (1)
5.  BGSU     126     2   (1)
6.  Buffalo    198     3   (3)

West:
1.  Ball St     275    2   (1)
2.  CMU       298    2   (1)
3.  EMU       167    1   (0)
4.  WMU      264    2   (0)
5.  NIU         412    1   (1)
6.  Toledo    120     2  (1)

Obviously Kent and Akron make sense.  Buffalo with 3 home games though? I guess it's probably because two of them are Akron and Kent.  I don't expect us to have 20 games on tv, but you would think they would want the reigning conference champ and a school with one of the biggest fan bases in the conference on TV more than once.

I have more of a problems with a lot of the match-ups than the number of games that Ohio got.  No Ohio/Kent or Ohio/Akron?  Ohio @ Ball St on Jan 29th would have been a great one to broadcast too.  Hopefully that Ohio @ CMU game will get picked up.  That's just quickly going through our schedule, and I'm sure you could find many similar games for other teams.  It just makes no sense why they wouldn't want to broadcast the marquee match-ups, much the same way they did with football.

The only thing I can even think of is that they want to keep some of those games with the hopes they would get picked up later in the season by ESPN, but who knows.

4 of the 5 Akron home games are being produced by the school, not STO.  All STO is doing is broadcasting those feeds.  Shame we don't have a couple more -- but hopefully we get one of the 21-day selections and I know the OU/Miami date at the end of the season was being held potentially for that ESPN slot.

Want more games?  Get as many people to watch our game as possible and give them ratings they can't pass up.

A little bit of cart before horse, Dragon.  Can't draw big Nielsens without being on TV.

WIth our season last year and return of at least 3 mainstays, you'd think we'd get a little more show.

It doesnt make sense and I think is a mistake.  As Dragon eluded to, they'll fix it next year if our ratings are high, and I bet they will be.  With STO being in Columbus and Cleveland, that is a whole helluva lot of Ohio Alumni.  I'd bet we will draw more viewers than Akron or Kent will, honestly.  A lot depends on how well the teams are playing, of course, being that the average fan is 100% bandwagon.

It makes perfect sense from an objective point of view.  We're really far away from the STO offices, so it's going to have to really be worth their while to come here.  Look at the schools 200+ miles from Cleveland and how many home games they're getting.  Buffalo is just on the edge, but it's an easy drive.

Also, it's a NEO station.  They're going to showcase NEO teams.  That's how TV works.  And as Alex pointed out, Akron struck a separate deal to get games on the station.

So, we have two options: Cry or take action.  Can we make our own deal with STO?  Can Bobcat Nation convince the powers that be that it's to their benefit to come here?

Remember FSN and how terrible their coverage was?  This is lightyears ahead of where we were just a year ago, and it's their first season.

I agree -- I still believe, as I stated when the STO announcement was made, that this deal is a huge upgrade for the conference.  We're looking at more games than ever before, HD for the vast majority, which we've never had before, and true state-wide clearance on the basic tier for the first time, as well as better coverage on upper tiers in Michigan, Indiana, etc.

On your other point, I'm sitting in a room with numerous students who would love to be a part of a game broadcast.  We have the talent to put together a game production, easily -- we just don't have the equipment for that kind of remote.  But, is there a way to get it done?  I think so.

First, those Akron games are listed as ISP productions.  ISP also does most of the Miami games that air on ONN.  Well, we're an ISP school as well -- have we talked to them?  Where do they get their equipment to do those broadcasts?  What does STO pay for the right to broadcast those games?  I think it warrants some investigation.

I would have to think STO would broadcast almost any game if it was provided to them. I can't imagine they get very high ratings when they are not showing live sports. I know I certainly don't tune in unless there is an actual game on.

This conference is so un-godly horrible.....yet we continue to bend over and take it from them.

Why a fine institution like ours continues down this path is beyond me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't our current AD say when he arrived that he was not in favor of televising home games? If so, I would doubt there would be any effort from Ohio to revive the OSN.
