Appreciate Mark Znidar's work on the MAC write ups and about the Bobcats...

But there is quite an error...they say the Walter Offutt will be in the rotation for the Cats THIS season...

Sure would be nice if that was true. I'm all pumped up that we have all this nice publicity going into the season, but it's really hard to gage how this team will do this year with all that has happened over the offseason. I think a lot of the larger publications are picking us to have a great year, but they also have no clue that we are without Coleman, Kellogg, or in this case Offutt.

I'll tell ya where we'll go. Someplace warm. A place where the beer flows like wine. Where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I'm talkin' bout a little place called... ATHENS.

I liked this article but when I read this line and pondered it's meaning I was quite troubled. Enough to come on here after doing some research and discuss it.

"The coaches do want me to be even more of a leader this year, and I'm going to take that role," he said. "Last year, Armon took pressure off me. Now, more is on me. I have to step up, take more big shots and lead."

I can see a coach saying to his aspiring point guard certain things but what was said and what was heard is so often different. It has been my experience to observe on occasion a team with a Point who is thinking "take big shots" is indeed in trouble. Shooting guards and Point Guards are aptly named and only in the Ohio Valley Conference does the team that has a Shooting Point Guard ever thrive. I do so hope that Mr Cooper realizes he has the support and playmakers to get the job done and keep the pressure off himself. Washington , Freeman, Keely, Baltic and now Msrs Hall and Johnson.

Point Guards that distribute often find that their own shots become easier when the opposition has to guard all five players. Notably, I found that Mr Cooper is in the Top 10 in the record book for 3 point FG attempted in a season already. Mr Walther made it twice with greater accuracy at 34% compared to 31 for our still young PG and much ruckus was made regarding Mr Walther's shot selection. Perhaps he will be there all four years? Rather ignominious acheivement if you are not also on the 3 pt FG made list. In the exhibition games his % has been much improved but I fear the "make big shots" mentality may be our downfall if teams learn to concentrate on the shooter rather than the team led by a distributor who can also knock down big shots. A fine line indeed.

Sir, I think you're overthinking this. Any team leader needs to be unafraid to take that shot when it comes to crunch time. DJ has already shown ability to not only take those critical shots (@ Akron) but also knowledge when to pass it off (Miami). He'll be fine.

I really hope, at some point, people on this board will finally disabuse themselves of the notion good point guards don't score in addition to distribute.

Perhaps Mr Dragon, I am. I certainly hope so. It has not ever been my notion that good point guards don't score. Quite the opposite. My notion has always been that good point guards score at will. It is my assertion that in order to be a good point guard you lead the team in assists as well as being able to score, by opening up the floor and executing the offense your shots become within the context of an executed offensive strategy. I would never infer that a player anywhere on the floor be afraid to step up and take a shot. 5 dangerous men are hard to defend.. Please do not resort to your usual act of putting words in peoples mouths to make it read the way you want. It is a two terminal world. You are not choosing to hear what I am saying which I daresay is often your modus operandi. If I am overthinking it so be it. It is still an interesting discussion. I hope you actually read my words and get the context correctly. Assuming I will see you on the video feed today.

Mr. tdcz,

It appears that you are being somewhat selective in which quotes of Cooper you address. In addition to the Dispatch quotes, he's been quoted elsewhere as saying that his biggest challenges this year are to improve his own shot selection and to improve in getting his teammates involved effectively.

Agree with you that we don't want DJ forcing shots in crunch time, but I'm pretty confident we'll see better judgment and decisions in those situations than was shown at times last year.

It's a conversation this board has had before and I saw that it could certainly go that way again. But, dude, scale is back a little on speculation on my modus operandi. You were talking about shooting point guards and it reminded me of past arguments. (shrugs) Maybe I'll fade back into the background again.
