Last year, we were a below-average offensive rebounding team, mainly because we usually elected to fall back on defense rather than try to recover our misses.  The Bobcats retrieved 32.4% of offensive rebound opportunities last year, 190th in the country.  That rate fell 29.9% in conference play, 10th in the MAC.  They were less successful on the defensive end, only grabbing 66.3% of rebound opportunities, 230th nationally.  In MAC play, it was 65.4%, again 10th. This year has been very different... on the offensive end.  We rank 54 in the country with a 39.1% offensive rebounding rate.  It will be interesting to see if that success holds up come conference play.  We're still poor on the defensive boards, though, with a 66.9% d-rebound rate, 215th in the country. Basic Indiana basketball. He has not played the game that long but he got the message from coach on rebounding skills. Wish they could get his ankle better so he could get on the floor a bit more. Back to Top berniebobcat General User Member Since: 11/23/2010 Location: San Luis Obispo, CA Post Count: 297 Status: Offline     RE: Rebounding    Posted: 11/28/2010 8:34:56 PM  These two games are the first I've seen live in a few years.  I too am impressed with the lack of rebounding.  The other problem is inside shooting.  Fortunately I view these as correctable with effort vs. skill.  These guys need to get an old tape of Rodman out and watch him  anticipate and position his way to 20 rebounds a game.  The good news is the hustle on defense.  The press won the game.  Also two of our freshman showed they can shoot--Kellog and  Hall.  The latter looks to be a real comer. Those teams have strong rebounders, size and depth. We need to box out and team rebound better getting the loose balls.  Very pleased with Baltic so far, He has been much improved. I think Baltic will get only better the more he plays. I think Hall and Sayles can be good rebounders from the 3 position.  Our guards are also getting some rebounds.     Back to Top Ryan Molnar General User Member Since: 11/27/2010 Post Count: 51 Status: Offline     RE: Rebounding    Posted: 11/29/2010 9:40:54 AM  Bigs are our biggest weakness right now IMO. Not that we don't have good ones just that we have no one where we can feed the ball into and know they are going to make good decisions. Last year it was KVK, year before Tillman, year before Leon Williams. DeVaughn and Baltic aren't natural back to the basket type players so when they do try those moves it takes an extra second or two longer than someone who is used to it. That second or two may not seem like a big deal to the casual fan but that allows a shifting defense to get set in what it needs to be. I'll certainly give you effort, but there's a lot more to it than that- court awareness, anticipation, positioning, timing/coordination, quickness, elevation, reflexes, strength, to name some others.
