A game we all want to forget for sure.  The mood around the team after the game was pretty bad.  They just don't seem happy out there.  I think some soul searching is in the near future.   Still, there were some bright spots:

The good:

- Reggie Keely.  That may have been his best game so far.  Showed poise inside.  Got the ball and didn't hesitate, took it strong to the hole.  Stepped out and hit a couple mid-range jumpers, played some good defense and did work on the glass.  Really, just a very good performance and I hope this is indicative of things to come.

- Defensive rebounding.  The Jaguars are not a good rebounding team, but I choose to look at it positively.  We got 81.3% of possible d-rebounds, by far our best performance of the year.  Two or three guys under the rim on most shots, usually the closest guy got the ball.  It was nice to see.

- Ball movement from the 1-3 positions.  The guards and Tommy did a good job keeping the ball moving, finding open men for three (we missed a lot of good looks yesterday), and getting the ball into the post.

- Defense for the first 35 minutes or so.  Until we went up 10, I was really happy with our defense.  Rotations were good, gave up few good looks, and the Jags took a large number of contested jumpers.

- Tommy Freeman.  Led the team with 17 points, chipped in 3 assists and 2 steals.  Looked a lot better out there and he's ready to be his normal self soon.

The decent:

- Devaughn Washington.  37 minutes and a double-double, but he's just not playing as strong inside as he used to.  I don't know if he's afraid to miss or hesitant to what, but he should be asserting himself in the paint and he's not.  We need him to.

- We're still, amazingly, 63rd in RPI.

The bad:

- The defensive collapse leading to a 18-0 run.  We all know this.  I still don't know what happened.  I will guess we had a lot of open shots rim out that normally go down and that got us down mentally.  Poor DJ couldn't buy a basket.

- Our response to the IUPUI press.  We were scared of it.  Several times we flirted with a 10 second violation and it completely disrupted our offense, resulting in bad possessions.

- 24.6% turnover rate, especially when you only force turnovers 15.1% of the time.

- The inside-out game.  The ball would go inside and not come back out.  Our forwards are bound and determined to shoot the ball whenever they get it.  IUPUI figured this out and started collapsing as soon as a ball came into the key.  I can remember Devaughn passing out one (and it was kind of a weird slingshot pass), and it found a wide-open Nick in the corner.  I don't think I need to explain the benefits of our bigs passing.  This is, I think, the biggest problem in our offense right now.

- Off-ball movement.  Our coaches spent most of the second half alternately begging and demanding people move.  Again,  I don't think I need to explain why this is a problem.

Not sure anyone can sum it up better than Dragon just did.

So many missed shots during that late run by IUPUI.  So many.  And most were good looks.  Uhg.

The team in general, and DJ in particular, doesn't respond well to presses.  If there's one drawback to DJ, that's it.  Every time DJ has been neutralized, it seems it's because of a press.  That's what TN did in the NCAA last year -- they had somebody in his face all the time.  I didn't see yesterday's game, so I don't if that's what happened, but it's something the opposition is looking at, I'm sure.  It's gotta be something Groce needs to work on, not just with DJ but with everybody.

Among the good, it was great to see Freeman get his stroke back.  I was concerned that maybe he was still feeling the effects of the concussion, especially since he played only five minutes against IL St. the other night.

Looking at my two typical sources for RPI, I'm guessing Dragon is looking at bbstate, which appears to mirror realtimerpi.com, and Ted at udpride.com.  Unfortunately, realtimerpi (which had us 63) updates only daily, and it doesn't happen until as late as 1pm Eastern some days -- so it doesn't include yesterday's games yet.  UDPride has updated.

I was also really happy with Reggie yesterday -- he looked like he was playing with some confidence inside.  Hope he can keep it up!

You're right, Pataskala.  It might take time, especially if DJ is inexperienced against the press (and I think he is), but I have confidence he'll figure it out.

IUPUI did a great job on the press of once DJ gave the ball up they kept him from getting it back.  As I said earlier this team has to find another scoring and distribution option because you Point Guard doing it all is a bad thing.

I didn't see the game, but to have them score 16 consecutive points from the 8 minute mark until the 2 minute mark is very dissapointing, especially at home. I'll say it again, a good team wins that game. We are not yet a good team.

Agreed. With so much focus paid to DJ we need someone to take that load off of his shoulders. The obvious choice is Kellogg but it may take some time for him to be comfortable in that role. As heartbreaking as the loss was yesterday there were still some very encouraging things that were on display yesterday. Dragon covered most of them.  It was great seeing Keely come out of his funk. That was easily his best overall game IMO.

Didn't see or hear this game.  Any time outs caused during the opponents run?  Any set play called after to "get a good shot"?

You forgot to give credit to the HVAC team. Another solid performance from them yesterday.

Ohio got a number of "good shots" during IUPUI's 18-0 run.  We just were not making them.  However, it possibly could have helped to call a strategic time out.  We'll never know now.

I looked at the play-by-play. There were two media timeouts and one team timeout during the run.

A reading of the play by play sees a Media Time Out at 7:48 with OHIO up 49-42.  Then, a team Time Out called at 2:59 after a 3-pointer that culminated an 11-0 run making the score 53-49.  Out of the Time Out DJ missed a jumper and comitted a foul resulting in two more points...essentailly, GAME OVER at that point.  Must have been a miserable 5 minutes of basketball.

This did not happen, I was watching the rotation of the bigs. Unless my screen is too small( 56") and I missed something this did not happen till he missed a hedge, Nobles buried a 3 from the top and Freeman and Sayles barked at him all the way back to the huddle under 2 mins. I believe he went to the end chair and was removed from the game with a towel around his neck for the duration. Could be he is the one unteachable? Love the archives, makes it easier to coach from 200+ miles away.
