NSU comes in at 1-9, and the last time OU played a team with such a poor record was St. Francis.  In that game, the starting five played about 20 minutes each and the game was still a blowout.  The next game -- St. Bonnie -- they came out flat: 39% from the field and 22% from 3-pt land.  Because the Cats will not have played in over a week and have a maybe not so easy game against Robt Morris on Sunday (they're 4-7 with close losses at Kent and Cleveland St), I hope at least DJ, Washington and Freeman see at least 30 minutes against NSU, even if it looks like the Cats are running up the score.  NSU and RMU are the last two games before MAC play; time to build some momentum before the Fiami game.

I don't like it, I don't agree with it, and I have no inside knowledge of it - BUT - from the looks of things, Freeman's minutes are going the opposite way you desire.  At crunch time of the Temple game it was Hall not Freeman out there. Tommy's body language isn't good, and anybody who's watched this team on a regular basis would have to agree.

Again, just my observations and could be totally off. I would think Groce learned his lesson last year by sitting Tommy in key situations early on, but you just never know.

It's just my opinion, but I really believe for this team to be a success, DJ has to play 35 minutes, and Devaughn and Tommy have to get 30-32 minutes each. They have to play quality minutes in return, but nonetheless I think we've got to have the Senior Leadership, Basketball IQ, and the Playmaker out on the floor as much as possible.

I could not agree more with BL.  Senior leadership cannot be overvalued with a team that is as young as the Cats are right now.  In exchange for those minutes, I would like to see Tommy and Devo have more of a killer instinct early in the games.

I don't get Tommy's lack of minutes either. Our best shooter. Smart. Tough minded. Seems exactly the kind of player you need on the floor late in games.

I've posted this multiple times and I think we started seeing it against Temple.  Our best lineup is:

Cooper
Freeman/Kellog
Hall
Washington
Baltic

Down the stretch we're going to have to give these guys huge minutes.  JG is also going to have to be creative in his combinations as this is a team that struggles to score when we get the wrong combinations on the court.  We almost have to have at least 3 of these five on the court during substitutions times as without them, our offense is relegated to DJ going 1 on 5 as it has appeared in many games.  To be more specific, Johnson/Sayles/Keely have to play very limited minutes spelling Washington/Baltic/Hall due to their lack of offensive production.

I'm confused.  When has Devaughn shown leadership?  If we could put Tunji's head on Washington's body, we'd have a beast on our hands, someone to lead the charge.

Alas.

I'm 95% sure after Tommy hit 3 pointer number five against St. Francis, I saw Groce cringe on the sidelines.

Just an odd reaction.

There's clearly something odd going on, as two years in a row he's decreased Tommy's minutes in non-conference play to the point of people on this board taking notice and wondering what's going on.

Nothing against Hall, Sayles, Rico, or anyone else playing Tommy's position (or one similar to it)...but this year, I want Freeman on the floor in crucial situations. Nobody can tell me we're a better team with him on the bench when we need key baskets or stops. I just can't buy that.

The whole thing just makes no sense.

Ages old story...talented/athletic guys versus a "player" who may not be as athletic but knows how to play the game.  Coaches almost always pick the athletic ones hoping they can make up for poor judgements and actions with their athletic ability...seldom happens and teams suffer.

I assume its a matchup issue/decision.

Tommy logged the 2nd or 3rd most minutes against St. Bonaventure and IUPUI -- the previous 2 non blowout games.

I'd like to see him out there at the end of every game as well.

Can somebody hit a pull up jumper for me?.....

100% agree. I hope it's just Groce experimenting to see how his young guys handle crunchtime before we get to the important part of the season.  It will be a shame if he didn't learn his lesson from last year.

I'm not sure what is going on but Groce went off on Tommy at the end of the Temple game .when Tommy was on the bench. I can't believe no one else saw or heard this. Not a good sign and classless on Groce's part. Take it to the locker room.

I don't pay enough attention to the rotations on a day-to-day-to-week-to-season-to-etc basis, but I've heard greater basketball minds than I(not hard to do) say that Groce's rotations are actually pretty crazy until conference play kicks in. Then a more 'normal' rotation is put out for conference play. Perhaps those that pay attention can confirm or deny what I've been told (but not noticed).

That's usually because the number of available players has shrunk by the time we hit MAC play.  Groce has never had this many options coming into the conference slate.  We'll see how he handles it.  I remain nervous.

I would like to see us use Baltic, Keely and Washington inside and work on getting good inside looks. We are not a good shooting team and developing Keely into a force inside come be a huge difference maker come March.

I'd like to see Norfolk St. come out and play zone for 40 minutes.  We need to learn how to beat a zone sometime.

I agree.....we need to work it down low more often.....Washington seems inconsistent so far; have high hopes for Baltic during MAC play.
