Wow!  What a fun game, until the end.  Like every contest with Miami, very competitive and tight.  To preface my observations, I have only watched this team on one other occasion, against Valpo.

1)  This was the first time I've watched us on STO, and overall, I thought they did a pretty good job.  Crowd looked great, annoucers were decent.  I look forward to more coverage (I hope) on this network.

2)  Our entire offense is Cooper.  He is phenomenal, and since 2000, I can't think of another player who was this important to our entire team, except maybe Jaivon Harris during his senior year.  Even when DVW or Freeman score, it seems Cooper fed them the ball.  Without Coop, we score 37 points a game.

3)  I'm impressed with TJ Hall.  I haven't seen much of him, but if this game is any indication, he will be a nice player.

4)  I'm 93% confident that the Love and Monroe could have played today, and fought each other for every single rebound, and they would have done a better job on the glass than anyone else on the floor.  We absolutely got crushed on the boards today, and holy hell, this was frustrating.

5)  DVW is a senior, and in 4 years, he still has not figured out how to not foul out.  Has to cause Groce headaches.

6)  I'll say it again, the crowd looked amazing on TV.  You could see the OZone hopping.  We should be dominating the MAC based on our fan support alone.  I'm not sure how any recruit who is deciding between a few MAC schools does not pick OU.

7)  Great job from the charity stripe today by our boys.  Anyone who follows this team knows that this usually kills us more than it helps.  Great effort.

8)  If I wrote this at the end of regulation, I would not have said one thing about Baltic, good or bad.  However, he was the MVP of OT.  Clutch on both ends of the floor.

9)  Officiating was bad, but really, in the MAC, they just call this 'normal'.  Not too much to complain about.

All in all, it is still apparent that the cupboard was left pretty empty offensively when Bassett and Coleman decided to bail.  The nucleus of a young and talented team is there, but this year will be extremely excruciating at times.  We need a big man, badly.  If we had a Leon or Tillman on this team, I think we run away with the MAC.  Tough loss, and unfortunately, that likely kills attendance for the rest of the season.

This should be points 1-9. Second chances gave Miami the ball back the whole game all the way to the icing free throws.

The loss might cost us some fans, but I'm not sure how anyone can walk away from that game (3 OTs and intense throughout) and not want to come back to another one.

FTs were great overall.....those 2 that Cooper missed with the score tied at the end of the 1st (i think) overtime may have cost us the game. He is def our best player, but there are still some things that frustrate me when watching him, namely late game FTs and ill-advised deep 3s early in the shot clock.

We had a lot of contributions throughout the game....Cooper, Freeman, Hall, Washington in the 2nd half, Baltic in the OTs, Keely actually played pretty well in the limited time he was on the floor.  We have to figure out a way to rebound better, but I think that starts with us keeping DW and Keely on the floor and out of foul trouble

If the 7 footer is going to sit for 55 minutes, we have a problem when 3 guys foul out. Where was Rico Johnson?

Yes - the offensive rebounding for Fiami was dominating. We were nowhere to be found.

I think I mentioned it in a previous thread, too - but DJ cooper should not be our leading rebounder, no matter how quick he is and hard he hustles.

Not sure where Tommy disappeared to in the overtimes but he was the very hot hand during regulation. Not saying he was without fault, but he had a pretty decent game.

Coop likes to throw up shots from Bubba range and does so way too often when these games come down to a last possession deal.  I'll leave it at that.

A lesson to the bigs, you can't be effective if you are sitting on the bench with foul troubles or eliminated from the game. The only one that didn't foul out was Baltic and he had a decent stretch in the overtime periods.

I can't help but think of how different this outcome could have been if we didn't miss those easy bunnies in the first half.

Rooting for Akron is like cheering on the Taliban.

Miami got to most of the loose balls and killed us on the glass.  In my opinion, the deciding factor in the game.

I think so too.

SECOND CHANCE POINTS:

MIAMI - 19
OHIO - 2

That killed us

Hope everyone enjoyed that crowd because that will probably be an anamoly compared to the rest of the season. Unless there's been a total shift in Athena it's going to be the same thing agai. Today was the perfect storm with it being the first conference game, MAF banner unveiled, and Miami in town. Unless it's Dads or Moms weekend we wont see a crowd like that the rest of the season.

Seems like the Ozone is putting on a good pregame next weekend for the Kent game.  I feel like the attendance will be strong from the students again next week...or at least the loud and rowdy students the team needs. Now, if the cats have a letdown game against the Flashes, the attendance will probably drop off big later in the season.

Certainly rebounding caused the loss.

Sorely lacking an inside force on this team. Watching Washington, it doesn't seem like he is a senior and really does not belong in the half court game. Freeman was huge in regulation. Baltic was the reasoning for extending the OT periods. Defense needs to be much more consistent. Cooper needs to buy into Groce's pleads in improving his defensive game.

Unable to attend the game in Athens, although caught the game on STO. I am one of those that typically doesn't really care what we are called - Ohio, Ohio University, OU, -any work for me. But, the color guy with Michael Rhegi always went with 'Ohio U' in naming us.....this broadcast was only a regional broadcast, with most of the captive audience residing in Ohio - I would think most people would go with the shortened Ohio (like Rhegi) or even shorten it more to OU. I was waiting for the broadcaster to refer to Miami as 'Miami of Ohio', but never did.

Wasn't the best reffed game, but was not horrible - certainly not the cause for the loss, although refs became a bit more whistle happy in the 2nd half. Both sides had a fair amount of sloppy ball handling and poor decisions. No doubt both coaches have a lot to improve upon before MAC tourney play.

STO caught a brief glimpse of Freeman stretching his back and heading to the locker room in the first half (I think).  He came back out later and seemed to be ok, but he also seemed to lack energy in the OT (he was also tightly guarded in OT, which cut down on his chances).  Hope he's ok.

The team seemed to quit on defensive rebounding at times; when the shot went up, instead of position for the rebound, they would fall away, like they expected the ball to go in.

I liked the overall intensity on defense and the fact they pushed it up the floor on offense quite a lot.  Shot selection was not the best sometimes.  Too many times shots were taken against double or triple teams underneath with lots of time on the shot clock instead of kicking it back out to reset.

It was good to see the Convo so full and rockin.  Hope it keeps up.

Me too.  But, unfortunately, it seems like since 2000, every single game in which we have a really nice crowd, we lose.  Then, attendance settles in right around 5k for the remainder of the season.

The end of the cap was the only fitting ending to this back-and-forth contest.

Ohio wanted it, but Miami wanted it a little bit more.
