It's all about the Defense.

Our big men need some moves close to the basket and some fakes such as Mavunga's.

The more we pass it, the better we are.

Kellogg needs to not give up his dribble so readily.  A point guard who's lost his dribble is well along the way to a turnover.

It's all about the Defense.

Did I see a TFreeman BigHead in the OZone on the vidcast?  Nice.  (Seemed like the vidcast got shaky at the 12 minutes to go mark--anyone else or my computer only?)

We need more off ball movement and screening.

On the three redhawks hit to tie it just before half, our two defenders walked away from the shotter?!!

It's all about the Defense.

Trust me, the difference between our post players making shots and doing what they have done all season is NOT the ability to execute a shot fake.

Must've been a great, electric feeling, inside the Convo.

All in all, we played fairly well given what we have and who we are.  We don't have many scorers, we don't have many good defensive players and we don't rebound well (the latter probablly having to do with the lack of solid defensive players).

Good job by Russ and Rob to mention OldKatz trying to fire up the crowd during the 3d overtime.

Repeat:  the more we pass the ball, the better we are.  We throw up some impressively bad, off balance/rhythm shots when we shoot early in the shot clock.

Early 2nd half, Tommy was one on one with Mavunga near the left shoulder extended.  Mavunga was faking, looking to see what he could get.  Tommy stayed on his toes, balanced and in a crouch as he used his hands to block what shot/drive/pass attempts/thoughts Mavunga threw.  It was totally solid, in position defense that I seem to see consistently from Tommy but not too often from the rest of the squad.  Fundamentals?

During most timeouts, why was electronic music playing instead of the 110?  Are people aware that it's Stand up and cheer, cheer loud and long for old Ohio, for today....

Since our offense is sketchy, it's all about the defenese.  With solid defense leaving us in good rebounding position.

Ever notice how Tommy will off ball screen and point out to guys where they should move to?  How could there have been games in which he was not on the floor in important moments?

It was evident that the team with more patience would win today's game.  Also, letting redhawk get up 3-4 points to start each of the overtimes was not in our favor.

Seems to me that our guys need some teaching in how to probe.  Sometimes when ya get the ball you should immediately spin it (pass it a teammate for court position advantage).  Other times a player should, before putting it on the floor, probe/fake to see if rising for a jumper or putting it on the floor will yield better position for a shot or pass.  Too often it seems that our passes are not with any particular intent to advance toward the hoop.

It's all about the defense.

That late-in-the-clock set of let-DJ-go irks me generally but especially for how we have 3-4 guys just standing there and watching.  No picks--especially off the ball.  Not much team play movement to get ready to rebound or to be in position for a pass.

Interesting that after a big, emotional game today there is not much more activity on this board than the football threads are now seeing in the off season.

miami still sucks.

It's all about the rebounding.  The defense was good.

Defense was good. Rebounding was an issue today, but we're still about even on rebounding differential on the year. I just want us to value offensive possessions and make sure we're alway getting a good look at a shot. We don't have to work the shot clock either. If we can find an open jumper with 20 seconds left, take it. Just don't pull up and chuck a prayer.

I agree - It's all about the rebounding - defense was pretty good - except for the continuing lack of blocking out to get rebounds.

Following some shots would get a few more as well.

Both require better discipline and "instincts" - why is that a problem?

And that, my friend, is a prime indicator of why rebound differential is a terrible statistic.

On the post-game show, I think Groce said Miami missed 44 shots and went and got 20 of them. That's obviously horrible but I think Miami might have been over 50% offensive rebounding percentage in OT.

My 'it's all about the defense' was not about today's game so much.  I agree that our defense was generally pretty solid.  My thought is that we won't win many games due to our offense--so we better start with bringing the defense EVERY GAME.  Hence 'it's all about the defense.'

Two further thoughts.  First a small one.  Can one of our larger guards or small forwards post up occasionall?.  That would be a different look for the oppo to guard and, most importantly, could free up our bigs to rebound.

Second.  The big one.  Somehow DeVaughn's got to get his role down, be it by his own realization or the coaches drilling it home.  I guess that last year with KVK being The Big Man he was able to find holes to spurt to in order to use his athletic skills.  No to this year.  Seems to me that he's got to determine to be the guy at the rim.  Use that athletic and leaping skill to swat shot block defend from the rim to about six feet out.  Also, a ton of rebounds and a good number of points just be swifting to the ball and putting it (off rebounds) back in.  This is not an original thought we me.  I don't do original thoughts (unless I do) but someone else posted it and I agree.  Until DVW embraces this role and becomes a force at it, we are middle of the road.  It just seems the only thing we have that can really make us a good team.  When you start seeing 15*18 and 11 from DVW every game, you'll see a tough team.  If you don't, then not much.  DVW at that level will magnify everything else good about us.
