I know people will moan and spit fire but..Steven Coleman is still in town. He is actually still taking classes so I am going to put it out there. Coach Groce sit down with Steve and offer him at least a walk-on position for the remainder of the season. Work out whatever probationary situation you guys can..but Steve hasnt been in trouble at all. I sat down and spoke with him recently and NO he did not quit to pursue a MUSICAL CAREER. Was it spent to make it seem like he did..YES. Did he release a few albums on a free music tape website yes. But Steve is far from illusions of being a Rap Superstar. He says he just didnt have the fire and love for the game anymore. And I respect him for taking a step back and leaving instead of going through the motions. With that said I can make an argument that  SEVERAL CURRENT BOBCATS DO NOT HAVE THE FIRE AND LOVE FOR THE GAME. Just looking at the  lackadaisical and nonchalant way they are playing makes me wonder does Coach Groce have the hearts and minds of these athletes totally in the program? Players are asked everyday to make changes when things are not successful I say this Coaching staff needs to reevaluate the way they are doing things if they want to win the games.

This is V-E-R-RRRRY Interesting.  I had assumed he was back in Florida cutting rap CDs and getting ready to make the rounds of the TV variety shows and cable news shows as the phenom basketball player turned rap artists.  If he's still here, and still enrolled as a student, and he has the grades, I certainly vote for your plan.  It could make a world of difference for this team.  GO OHIO!

I thought he didn't ever leave Athens based on his tweets...

Still, he didn't have a love for the game, and I've seen nothing that makes me think he has regained a love for the game.  I don't want Lebron type mindsets on OUr team...  I want guys who are playing because they love the game, love wearing OUr jersey, and love winning.  I don't think Coleman has those things...

And the current group is showing such vast amounts of fire and desire? I dont question their love for OHIO. But I have to question with the depature of several basketball players for various reasons..namely Alex Kellogg...what remains to be said is why did this young man who has basketball firmly imbedded in his DNA all of a sudden lose the desire to play for Coach Groce? Make any excuse you want..focus on academics. Alex is a good kid and he was slated to play meaningful minutes. And true Steve is really into his hobby which is music but come on. Steve was a starter and could come in right now and give 10-15 very much needed points off the STREET. You coach and you coach these kids but you also have to REMEMBER when the love and the fun for the game is gone..when guys fill like 5am they are going off to JAIL...then you have a problem Houston. I ran into a OHIO football player just the other morning on my am jog..it was 5:20am..he had his headphones on..his Ohio gear heading over to Peden..So I asked him man its the off-season why are you going in so early..he stated well the workouts are optional but there is no place I would rather be each day..and apparently MOST of the team feels this same way...you cant tell the football guys that they are not in the SEC or the BIG 10...they love it here and I bet given the chance 85 percent would stay right here...cant say the same for the Basketball program right now.

I'm not sure what the NCAA rules are on this, but I would welcome back Coleman to the team if he wanted to be there.  I think Bassett was the cancer on the team that encouraged some of the others to go AWOL with their attitudes.  Coleman's game is missed, but not worth the trade if his attitude is not right.  If he is OK academically and emotionally, I would take another chance on him.  For the record, I would say the same thing if we were winning too.  I would give a young man another shot to regroup and grow up in our program.

I understand wanting to look for external fixes for this team's problems, but the desire would have to be there on Steve's part for this to even begin to be a discussion. Seems like there's no indication of that based on this thread.

In addition, I'd be worried about the message this would send to the team members who have been with the team all season, busting it in practices, etc. Everyone's seen the movie Remember the Titans, right? Remember in the final game when Denzel's head coach character won't let "Petey" play because he turned his back on his teammates? This idea is the opposite of that, no matter how much we could use some of Coleman's contributions right now.

I'd have to nominate this as a candidate for clueless post of the year.  If Steve wants to come back next year and can do what any other walk-on would do, then bring it on.  To have him rejoin the team 2/3 of the way through the season would be a slap in the face to all the players who have made the journey thus far.  I'd say the same about any other player so this is not a Steve thing.  He's a player I've always liked but he made a decision for this year and that's that.  Next year is a different season and a different story.

Alan, I would not call this the most  clueless post.  But it does push the limit.  If one would look at the situation we have had several athletes who have said that they were "burned out" and did return.  I understand that grades are a problem for immediate entry.  So any chance for this quarter I would say highly unlikely.  I do feel that he would be accepted for next year by the coaches and athletes without aid for at least 1 or 2 quarters.  There is no doubt he can be a great player in the MAC.

Panda, I said candidate and your comment about pushing the limit supports that.  That said, I agree fully with your last two sentences - if eligible and fully engaged, there's a place on the team for him.
