We have a standard and should uphold it. I'm not interested in how other universities have chosen to honor past players.

However, as soon as Trent has a degree from any accredited institute, there needs to be serious discussion of conferring an honorary degree.

By every measure, Trent has utilized his Ohio University experience to make a solid citizen of himself.

Degree status is only an excuse, there are some in power who simply do NOT want Gary honored. Just like they don't want alcohol on campus but they hold a liquor licensee for their own functions.

So, are you saying you don't agree with needing the degree? I have no issue with our current qualifications. This is an academic establishment and having minimum qualifications (like actually finishing your degree) I don't believe is unreasonable.

Never said that!!!!! I said that degree status is simply an excuse used because it is convince. What I am saying is that even with a degree it will still be an up hill battle for Gary. As for graduation, Gary left to chase his career, he left in good academic standing (I.e. Eligible, and moving towards a degree) and is really no different in that respect than a Matt Lauer who we fall all over ourself about, who also never finished his course work.

We have had this debate before, but I am simply stating there are those who are still around who will not let this happen regardless of degree, or degree from Ohio University.

Does Wilt Chamberlain have his degree from Kansas? We are now going on 20 years here. Retire the jersey and get it done. Greatest player I ever saw in the Convocation Center.

Nice article on Trent. Nobody is right or wrong here. They want a degree. Fine. If he gets one he'll be in. Tell me why you think he won't be in, even when he gets his diploma, because I don't see that happening.

Gary Trent is the BEST thing that ever happened to Ohio basketball, period, end of story. For his exploits on the court, his jersey should be hung in the rafters immediately, period.

As for the Hall of Fame, I would say screw Kirby Hocutt and his eight requirements. It is now 2011 and the criteria can be changed by the current administration. I don't think anybody is saying Trent was a choir boy but his basketball abilities speak for themselves and brought more fame and fortune to Ohio than anyone in the modern era.

So, get him in the Hall of fame too!

Gary Trent was never even charged for a crime must less convicted of a crime, not even a minor misdemeanor drinking offense. Gary left here with a lot shorter criminal record than at least 50 bobcats I could sit down and name in the past five years.

He should be in the Hall of Fame period point blank. He was the best bobcat and deserves to be honored.He came back during NBA strike and worked out with players. Lets put all the hurt feelings aside and do the right thing. His jersey should be retired as well.

You're wrong, Mr. Wannamaker. I just did a quick web search and found that he served five days in jail in 1998 for violating probation following a conviction for domestic violence. In the original case, he punched his pregnant girlfriend.
I'm guessing there are other convictions, as well.

I think there's an unwritten rule for most halls of fame that excludes those who beat up pregnant women.

SBH I am not wrong! While an athlete at Ohio University Gary was NEVER even charged with a crime, look it up!

As usual you only read what you want. In my original post I stated that Gary left here with NO criminal charges or record. Want to explain where I am wrong on those statements?????

yeah, he was the greatest bball player to ever wear the green and white, BUT, he used to cut in front of everyone in line in the cafteria and would take 2 entrees at a time, so I'm going to have to say no. sorry GT, you shoulda kept your hands off my Monte Cristo.

GT was a great player. I have a hard time calling him the "greatest ever to wear a Bobcat uniform." One of the greatest, sure. I'd also include the whole starting lineup of the 1964 Elite 8 team as among the greatest to ever play for Ohio. For instance, I'd like to see Forward Don Hilt in his prime one-on-one with Trent in his prime. I wouldn't want to bet on the outcome. Forward Mike Haley was quite a stud, too. Made Kentucky All-American Center Cotton Nash look like a freshman water boy, he stole the ball from him with such athleticism. Trent would be in the Ohio HOF, except for his treatment of the fair sex and the graduation issue. If he ever graduates and keeps his nose clean for a decade, I'd say he should be in. I can certainly make a better case for Trent eventually getting into the Ohio HOF than ever putting Pete Rose in the MLB HOF.

Different era's OCF, Don Hilt and Mike could not handle Gary's strength and explosiveness, that is what made Gary as great as he was. Please don't jump on me here, I am not dissing Don or Mike, both great players and people, however it is not fair to them to compare the era's because athletes are so much bigger faster and stronger and the game has changed because of it.

Notice SBH, hasn't come back around to recognize he can't read ;)
