During last night's broadcast, they played an interview in which Groce claimed that for his first trip to CMU for a game, the team had to ride a yellow school bus all the way from Athens.  I find that really, really hard to believe.  Anyone else have an opinion?

I laughed at that too.  Had to be one of the university-owned charter buses.  No way it was a yellow school bus.

Groce has never taken a bus ride to CMU.  They always use an OU Charter flight.  The yellow bus is what picked them up at the airport when they arrived at Mt. Pleasant

That's not how it was described last night. Clearly stated that their success last year led to an upgrade in transportation, allowing them to fly to CMU for the first time, compared to Groce's first year, when they drove the entire way in yellow.  Said even his wife made the trip and she proved she was a real trooper.

This is how rumors get started.  $1000 to squared kids' scholarship fund that there was no yellow bus from Athens to Mt. Pleasant.

The problem is Alan that they intra-spliced (is that a word?) with their discussion an interview with JG that at least made it appear to the casual viewer, which I was at that point because my attention was diverted by my wife, that JG was agreeing that that's what had happened.  Did I see that correctly, SBH?  If so, that's disturbing in that JG was being a party to the spreading of the rumor.  Perhaps, I didn't see it correctly with my attention not riveted to the screen at that point. I hope so.

Situation was just clarified for me.  Lack of de-icing equipment caused cancellation of team's flight out of Athens, forcing a trip to Parkersburg for a charter flight.  Only vehicle available at the last minute was a school bus, so they did travel by school bus, but only for a fairly short leg.  Perhaps Mr. Reghi misinterpreted or just exaggerated the facts.

                Nice call SBH

Ohio did take the Yellow Bus from Athens to Parkerburg to catch their flight during the 08-09 season, no other Ohio Bus was available at the time.  Reghi is a Dufuss and a little bit of him goes a long way with me.

I took a bus ride from Athens to Mt. Pleasant in January 1978. The ride back didn't go smoothly. Anybody remember the blizzard that year? We were stuck in Upper Sandusky for a week. It was pretty crazy. I found this on the internet:

The campus was forced to cancel
classes on one day during the bad
weather, and during the blizzard that
hit the state Jan. 26, the basketball
team found itself stranded in Upper
Sandusky for four days.

The team was returning by bus
from a game played at Central Michi-
gan the night before when they be-
came stranded around 5 a.m. along
with other motorists on Ohio Route
23. It wasn't until 10 hours later that
a snow plow and tow truck reached
the bus and brought the team into a
Knights of Columbus Hall that was
serving as a refuge center. The players

were forced to stay there until Mon-
day because road conditions remained
hazardous throughout the weekend.

Just as a frame of reference, I was one of the pilots that flew the team up to Mt Pleasant on university aircraft back in 96 or 97.  Back then OU had an 8 seat turboprop and a 4 passenger piston twin that we used for a variety of transportation purposes, most often to fly Dr. Glidden to and from Port Columbus as well as bring in trustees for their meetings on campus.  Occasionally the planes were used for athletics as well, flying the basketball team to New York for the preseason NIT back in 94 or 95 for example.  But this year was definitely not the first time the basketball team flew up to CMU.  The university has always been very supportive of the university owned airplanes, which considering the rural location, has been a wise investment I'd say.  But that's neither here nor there...
