We are currently in the midst of what is easily the worst season defensively of the John Groce era.  For example, Ken Pomeroy's site has us ranked as the 256th best defensive team in the country based on the AdjD stat, compared to #165 in Groce's first season, and #111 last year.

One big difference between this year and the first two years is the loss of Chris Holtmann from the staff.  When Groce was first hired I remember Holtmann being trumpeted as a defensive guru, so I can only wonder how much of our defensive regression this year relates to Holtmann's departure?

Where does GWebb rank in this stat compared to previous years?

They've improved to #239 under Holtmann, after ranking #337 and #277 the last two years.

Losing Holtmann was huge.  Given the choice between Coleman, Bassett, and Holtmann, I would take Holt.

Bemoaning the lack of in-game adjustments?  Well, Chris proved adept at that.

I agree.

He was very nice when we met him. Chris came to several of Ethan's games and stuck around afterward to talk to folks here in the gym. If he was as good a coach as he is nice a man you got to be missing him. I know Ethan seems to even though he really likes being at Ohio with the guys and this coaching staff. Chris was really good to him.

The loss of KVK in the post has also hurt our defense.

Holtmann and GW with a massive win tonight against conference power Coastal Carolina.

Groce with a class moment, congratulating Holtmann.

Good for him!  I keep trying to watch GW when I can, but they aren't on TV too much -- and I chose not to watch much of their Oklahoma game that was available.
