What a great perfomance today.  I certainly hope this represents his "coming out game," and that we have many more dominating performances like this to look forward to.  I also thought Kellogg had a good game today, especially on defense.  Would say more, but I've got to leave for a dinner engagement.

Maybe you can sneak a peak at this on your iPhone while eating dessert:  Ivo did very, very well today, but he was able to manuever freely because NIU was gambling to stop our perimeter game and that left them vulnerable inside.  I don't think we can realistically expect monster performances like this by Ivo on a regular basis, because most teams don't defend us like NIU did.  But as you say, hopefully this will give him a boost of confidence and make him tougher to guard on offense.

Ivo torched NIU. He had it all going today. He showed why he was do highly rated coming out of high school today.  He is a tough matchup for MAC big. A Big that came run the floor and post up inside.  If he can stay out of foul trouble he can do damage in the MAC.

Jeff, could it also have to do with NIU's personnel? Not just its strategy?

Yea, Ivo usually does well when matched up against guys with his body type. It's the bigger guys that give him fits.

Good to see him step up as NIU was purely focused on shutting down our perimeter game.

Regardless of the defensive scheme, it's still left to the player to make something of the opportunity afforded.

I wonder what kind of points he'd have finished with if he'd had gotten the start today instead of coming off the bench at the 19:00 mark.

On the UK/Florida pre-game, they showed the four top point scorers of the day. Baltic was third on the list. Rece Davis talked about the other three. Bilas interrupted and said don't forget about Ivo Baltic. Davis said I was going to mention something about him but wasn't sure whether Ohio had won or not.

NIU is really soft in the post, so that had something to do with it, but Ivo stepped up, no doubt. Toledo is probably just as soft, so we'll see if he can keep it going. Not that he'll score 31 again, but I defintiely think he and DW can dominate post play again Wednesday.

Agree with the observations already made.  Whether it was personnel or strategy, NIU really smothered Tommy and Nick today. (I think I heard 0 made 3 pointers today).

The good news was that we took what was there and made it work.  Right from the get-go it looked like the plan was to get it inside (we still missed a bunch of bunnies).

NICE JOB TODAY IVO!!

DJ made 1, we only tried 8.

As mentioned by all, great performance by Ivo, regardless of alignment and opposition.

Jeff, I don't discount anything you and others have said about personnel and defensive alignment of NIU; however, I can remember times in the past when a player with a lot of potential had a breakout game -- maybe against a weak opponent -- and that carried over for the rest of the season, or even the rest of said player's career.  Not to mix my sports, but the Cubs infamous trade of Lou Brock for Ernie Broglio is an excellent example.  The very day the Cubs traded Lou he had a breakout games in a doubleheader against the Cubs and went on to spur St. Louis to the pennant and a World Series win.  The Cubs were not a good team that year -- finishing 8th.  So, a breakout against the Cubs was not a big deal, but it seemed to be the impetus he needed.  Prior to the trade all Cub fans knew that Brock had a lot of potential but they weren't seeing it on the field.   Then the breakout doubleheader . . . and he was off to the races.  I'm just hoping that Ivo's game yesterday will provide him with the confidence he needs to play at a higher level.  Maybe it's just a one-game phenomenon due to weak defensive personnel and a scheme emphasizing taking away the three, and it'll have no carryover effect, but I'm hoping otherwise.

I give. Ranked by whom?

Groce's ability (along with Holtmann who recruited Ethan) to find unheralded talent or be the first in on rapidly rising talent is very impressive. I am sure you have a reason for your statement but I can't find a ranking for Baltic that has him on anyone's radar. How many ways can you find to provide erroneous information in a day full of postings? I think we all see that Baltic is talented and getting better each day but the true mark of a good recruiter is not only getting real the guys who are consensus with Rivals and Scout stars but also finding guys who are under the radar. I think you will find that Baltic was not highly rated coming out of HS and that Groce got a pretty good find to his credit Mr oubcjohn. Groce and his network of friends are able to find and identify talent early as evidenced by the number of guys he was in on early that chose to head off to Mich State and other larger, higher profile schools.

I found a summary of Hoopscoops MAC recruits in the Top 1000 of 2009 oddly enough in a Google search that directed me to a pretty good discussion on a Miami U. of Ohio Fan Board2008 MAC recruits on the Zips board has Ohio U. recruits listed with Coleman at 583

Not sure who Dobbs and Waters are in 2008 but  I found the 2007 rankings to include Freeman at 833 while Washington is at 968 and there is a Nagtzgaam at 847 and a Pearson at 492 that I am equally unfamiliar with but surmise that this administration is getting bigger fish than whoever was here before. I am amazed though in reading through those lists one recruit at a time and comparing to the results just how inaccurate the list actually projects out when you have the ability to look backward as to how their career has gone. Not saying anyone can do better but I sure would like to have a job with these guys as they are kind of like weathermen in this old farmers eyes, wrong about half the time.

To answer the question about talent in the other thread Central Michigan has the 13th ranked 2010 recruiting class in the country that year. They were as high as 10th till the final rankings came in.This discussion is from the summer prior to final rankings coming out. Ohio U was ranked at 118 for this years incoming freshman.

There also is the addition of 6'3 Brock Turson from Plymouth (H.S.) OH to Central Michigan's recruiting class, which is now ranked #10 on our list of the Top Recruiting Classes To-Date for the Class of 2010 and also already includes 6'5 Trey Zeigler from Mt. Pleasant (H.S.) MI, 6'0 Derek Jackson from Cleveland (Benedictine) OH, 6'7 Colin Voss from East Grand Rapids (H.S.) MI, 6'0 Paris Paramore from Triton (JC) IL, 6'10 Nate Van Arendonk from Grand Haven (H.S.) MI, 6'9 Andre Coimbra from Northeastern Oklahoma (JC) OK, and 6'8 Jevon Harden from Detroit (Loyola) MI.  And making the story even more interesting is the fact that Turson is ranked #663 nationally in the senior class by the HOOP SCOOP and he plans to walk-on next year due to the fact the Chippewas don't have any more scholarships available.

Can you provide me with a link to that? I have never been on their site for recruiting. Would be interesting to see who their writers are as I have been following hoopscoop, Rivals and Scout for well over a decade now. ESPN has not been on my radar. I will put it in my bookmarks alongside the others for future reference. Interesting that in none of my Google searches did an ESPN recruting list or profile come up when I tried to find any additional references to what I had on my other sites. Maybe I should listen to my buddy and try BING. Always good to find a new source, thanks.

I like ESPN the best of the 3...  They are the only ones who give evaluations out for free.

LOL! sometimes you get what you pay for. Kidding, it is a nice site. I am going to reserve judgement till I have had time to dissect it and come up with a good feel for their writers and how they do their research.

I just came back over from Hoopscoop and saw that Jimmer Fredette was between Freeman and Washington at 909.

EDIT Now I do not feel so bad. They have only been doing this starting with the 2009 class. This is going to be very interesting. I will have to go over to ask the local Scout and Rivals guys if they know a local ESPN writer. I think I ran into one at an IU game now that we are talking. He gave me his card and I laughed about a 19 year old IU student  who did not know who George McGinnis or Branch McCracken was writing evaluations for ESPN. If I remember he was raised in the Chicago suburbs and was a self professed basketball junkie who knew more about the Bulls and the NBA than he did about Proviso, Westinghouse, Aurora, Simeon and Marshall or Depaul, Loyola or Northwestern. I'll try to find that card and see if I can find him on ESPN. Can't have been too long ago as he had on a Crean and Crrimson shirt. I may have to ask Elston if he knows or remembers him.

I think ESPN has just as much merit as Rivals or Scout.

Rivals and Scout can't predict the future. Here are our highest ranked players according to those sites:

Rivals:
2009 - DJ Cooper
2008 - Stacy Waters
2007 - Tommy Freeman/Zach Nagtzaam
2006-2004 - None with Stars
2003 - Matt Annen
2002 - Jeff Halbert

Scout:
2009 - DJ Cooper
2008 -  Stacy Waters/Steven Coleman
2007 -  None
2006 - Asown Sayles
2005 - Antonio Chatman
2004 - Fears/Williams/Green
2003 - Sonny Troutman/Matt Annen/Eric Clemons?
2002 - Jeff Halbert

In Hindsight:
2009 - DJ Cooper
2008 - Steven Coleman
2007 - Tommy Freeman/Devaughn Washington
2006 - KVK
2005 - Jerome Tillman
2004 - Leon Williams
2003 - Sonny Troutman
2002 - Jeff Halbert

According to his Signing Day release, he was a consensus 3-star recruit and eighth-most sought-after player in the late signing period.

http://www.ohiobobcats.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/041509aaa.html

April 15, 2009

ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio University head men's basketball coach John Groce announced on Wednesday that forward Ivo Baltic has signed a National Letter of Intent and will suit up for the Bobcats in the 2009-10 season.

"We're very excited to add Ivo to an already very talented class," Groce said. "He is a tremendous fit for Ohio University and our basketball program, both on and off the court. As a player, we love his versatility, his skill level and his unparalleled work ethic. He has an opportunity to be a very special player during his time at Ohio."

A consensus three-star recruit, Baltic (Riverside, Mo.) is ranked 54th nationally among power forwards in the Class of 2009 by ESPN.com. He was also regarded by ESPN.com as the eighth-most sought-after player in the country heading into the beginning of the late signing period. Prior to his senior season at Park Hill South High School, he was rated No. 27 on the MOsports.com Super 50 list.

The 6-8, 205-pound Baltic averaged 23 points and 15 rebounds per game for Park Hill South as a senior in 2008-09, garnering first-team Missouri Basketball Coaches Association Class 5 all-state honors. He is a two-time member of the Suburban Mid Six Conference first team, and was a finalist for the 2009 DiRenna Award, given annually to the most outstanding player in the Kansas City metro area.

Baltic's addition bolsters an Ohio signing class that ESPN has already tabbed as one of the ten-best mid-major classes in the nation. He joins guard D.J. Cooper (Chicago, Ill./Seton Academy), the Chicago Sun Times' Small School Player of the Year, forward Marquis Horne (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton HS), a first-team Greater Miami Conference pick for the second year in a row, forward Reggie Keely (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights HS), a second-team Division I All-Ohio selection, and guard James Kinney (Champaign, Ill./Centennial HS), the fifth-place finisher in the run for Illinois Mr. Basketball, as part of the class arriving in Athens for the 2009-10 season.

All five members of the class were also McDonald's High School All-America nominees in 2009.

1. Had no idea Stacy Waters was that well thought of.

2. Ivo was a relatively big get for Ohio at the time, especially since Groce snagged him out of Kansas...not exactly a recruiting hotbed for the Bobcats.

3. Say what we will about TOS (And I've said plenty), but the man and his staff could find underappreciated big men. It's the one advantage that he seemingly had over Groce and his staff in terms of recruiting. TOS found ways to get thick but skilled guys like Terren Harbut, Williams, Tillman and KVK to Athens.

I think OUBJ's original statement was dead on.  He was pretty well thought of, and most of us (particularly me) were very excited when he committed to Ohio.  He has had a solid career 1.5 years in, but Saturday he really showed what he was capable of and what a lot of scouts saw in him during HS.

Ivo is on his way to a very nice career here.

I Almost completely forgot about Kinney before this post....man so many things have happened with this team in the past year. Honestly were lucky that we are doing as well as we are this year. (not saying that we are doing very well).

JG addressed this in his post-game show.  I don't recall in detail what he said, but I think it had something do with how he'd performed in recent practices.  What I remember more clearly is that JG seemed real happy that it had served as a motivator once Ivo did get into the game.  I heard this on the car radio on the way home from the game, and my concentration was split between road and radio.
