Have they been the same since Leon's tip in?

How many busloads of students did they send to that game to get their hearts ripped out? I don't think Alumni Arena has been the same since.

They beat the piss out of us the next year at their place in front of a juiced student crowd. That was the only game of Leon's career where he was held scoreless.

Buffalo never recovered from blowing a 20 point second have lead in a MAC tournament title game.

I don't know what a "20 point second have lead" is, but Buffalo led by 19.

What happened is Turner Battle graduated and Reggie's big recruit to replace him, Jerebko, went pro instead.  Took them a long time to recover.

I don't know about anyone else but I am starting to hate Buffalo as much as I hate Miami.  I have no problem cheering for Kent, Akron, Northern Illinois, Toledo, Bowling Green, and so on when they are not playing us but, I don't think I will ever see myself hoping Buffalo has another win ever!!  It's why I was overly excited when that buzzer went off and we had more points than they did.  Great win Bobcats and they are playing really good ball right now.  I am seeing great improvement by Ricardo and Ivo.  I was already impressed with Kellogg.  Hall is stepping up.  Now if only Big Reg gets it moving in the right direction.  He's trying though so can't be too hard on him.

Agreed. Akron and Kent State (and of course, Miami) are by far bigger rivals and always competing in the East. It's hard to hate a team like Buffalo that doesn't have much of a winning tradition. Buffalo very easily could be the team I have the least dislike for among Eastern Division foes.

I took a picture of the UB Student section last night. I don't have my camera cord at the lab, but I'll upload the picture to this thread when I get home this evening. Their student section, while fairly loud in the small cinder-block cavern that is UB's Alumni Arena, was quite small.

And they stupidly put them on the side of one end.  Every college team needs to put their students along the sideline. It just adds so much to the environment.  Looking at the paultry crowd behind the scorers table and benches last night was pretty bad. Move all the season ticket holders to that side and let the students have an Ozone-like section.

I don't hate Buffalo. I like that they hate us.  We always seem to have spirited games with them.

Russ was talking on the radio last night about how the Buffalo Sabres NHL team was playing at home last night, which always thins out the UB crowds at Alumni Arena.

Alumni Arena is one of two facilities in the MAC that I haven't been in.  Looks pretty nice on TV.  Their attendance varies, but they usually have a few games per year where they draw well.

UpSan, that's not the reason I hate them so much, it's their fans.  Especially since I almost went blows with one back in '05 up at Cleveland after we won the semi and they were getting ready to play and in between games I was getting my victory hot dog and drink and one of them called me a dumb f%&k for wearing OU gear and said they were going to kick our arse.  So, after a heated discussion, a security guard came over and made sure we went seperate ways.  Just after that, Buffalo has left a bitter taste in my mouth.

The only decent thing about where the UB students are is that they are right there at the end of the visitors bench. You hear just about everything thrown your way when that close to the students. Buffalo isn't really a nice arena in the least. Size wise it's "big" but it doesn't have a big time feel or anything like that. There's a track that goes around it like at Akron which seems to drop it a few pegs on the niceness of it right there. The sections are pretty goofy in some areas as well. BG is probably the worst but Buffalo really isn't that far behind.

That's understandable. I've never really had any bad encounters with any MAC fans actually, and most interactions have been pretty nice. I actually had a random Bowling Green student give me tickets just as I was about to buy them and most MAC fans have been friendly. I can't recall specifically having encounters with any Buffalo fans. But you'll always have some people who make the rest look bad.

You get a few rotten fans everywhere; most MAC places I've been to people have been pretty friendly. Miami fan got into it a bit with someone on our bus trip there, and I'll never forget Guido at Ball State (I know a few students on here will recall him), but nothing serious. I'm looking forward to my trip to the MAC Center for the second time here in a couple weeks.

I hate to contradict Russ, but the Sabers were on the road last night, though its doubtless true that any time they are playing it'll hurt UB's crowds.

On a related note, I think last night's 1900 people (official #s) was swelled significantly by James Stark's appearance for autograph signing at the half.

I lied, I can't figure out how to post pictures. Suffice it to say, it was about 85 people.

I'm from Buffalo and used to be a season ticket holder for them in football and go to a few b-ball games a year.

To be honest with you guys, Buffalo doesn't really care about UB athletics or their basketball team.

They gave good support for a period of three years (end of Turner Battle era and a year after)

Then they fell back to old "normal" ub fan support. Buffalo is a mid-sized city that has teams in NFL and NHL so they don't really support events that they deem as lower which is what they consider UB and the MAC.

If UB was in the Big 10 or playing big time teams, they'd come out to support them but they won't support the current team even if they are doing well in the MAC.

I'm pretty sure they're only averaging close to 2,000 people per game this year if that.

One other reason UB got a lot of support for those two seasons was because they were in the discussion for an at large bid. In fact, Joe Lunardi and many other bracketologists had them making it. That was very crucial in why fans went to the games. Even though they played in the MAC, people thought they were watching a big-time team that had potential to possibly make the NCAA tournament and maybe make it to the second round.

They finished that year with an rpi in the high 20's.

Also, I disagree with Alumni Arena not being nice. I like the arena. I think its nice inside and has nice seating. Its a little confusing the first time your their but I like the layout.

If they ever packed that place, it could be very loud. just my opinion.

I agree here mostly. I think 20s is a big high. Sounded awfully high and looking back, it seems Buffalo was in the 40s in most RPI listings that year. Still very good and leaves a team with some hope of an at-large. The Bulls were good for that time and it was good they had some fans.

I've never been to Alumni Arena, but it likes nicer than most MAC facilities on TV. Of course, that's not a good way to tell. I have been to UB Stadium for football. It was actually the game the Bulls ended their long losing streak by beating the Bobcats. It was a chilly, rainy day between two bad teams, so attendance was next to nothing. But it seemed like a nice facility.

It's too bad fans don't rally around the Bulls better, but it's understandable. Unless pro sports teams leave Buffalo, they'll never be supported that much. If Buffalo's population continues to decrease like it has, that could be a possibility down the road. But it's basically like Cleveland State. They don't get much of a following in Cleveland unless they're really good like the last few years, and even then, they average just over 3,000 per game.

Those were the days...2005 MAC Tournament.  Many busloads of students and others coming down from Buffalo--they had around 3,000 fans there, I'd guess.  Maybe more for the title game.  While TOS was being interviewed after we won our semifinal game, I remember the UB section got really loud getting ready for their semifinal and TOS turned around and looked up with a big smile like he was amazed.

In that tournament, I sat in the Buffalo section during a quarterfinal session and was amazed at the behavior of some of the UB fans toward each other!  A few people got into it re:  complaining about some fans standing during the game.  Security had to intervene.

I remember thinking that the UB fans were the crudest I'd seen around the MAC.  I also thought that at the time, they were the only student section to rival the Ozone...I've gotta admit they were a good student section in some ways.

I also remember that their cheerleaders posed suggestively on the baseline when opposing players were trying to shoot foul shots.

You get the picture...not your typical MAC fans...

As for experiences in general on the road in the MAC...I have had only a few problems.  When Marshall was in the MAC, some of our fans had trouble in Huntington, but I never did.  Was treated well.  One time at BGSU, my car got egged.  YES, at BGSU of all places!  One time at Akron, I had a fan pursue me out of JAR post-game after Akron had just beaten us.  One time at Kent, there as a brawl between players prior to the game...made me feel a little nervous, but did not have any problems with the Kent fans.
