Tommy Freeman moving up the Record Books

   Tommy Freeman was 5 for 10 from behind the arc against the BGSUcks .

      Tommy is NOW the new 3 pointers made for a career leader passing Dave Jamerson.

    Congrats to Tommy Freeman ! !

A fitting record breaker in my opinion would be to beat the horn at Oxford Tech again the last game of the season to send OU into the MAC tourny with the top seed

What is most amazing is once he is on top for 3 pointers made, he'll still be behind most the people on this list for 3 pointers attempted.

         Last year Tommy Freeman went 93 for 195 from behind the arc for a .477 % shooting percentage, which passed Jason "The Traitor" Grunkemeyer for number 1 on the 3 point percentage for a season.

That is an interesting question. You have to remember that the three point line has completely changed the game. Tim Joyce, Watler Luckett, Steve Skaggs, etc. would no doubt have put up big numbers but they would not have had nearly as many wide open 20 foot looks had those shots been worth more as they are today.

When Freeman was signed I thought he would be a similar player to Jeff Halbert. He has ended up being exactly that and more. He moved into the lineup at the end of his freshman season as O'Shea grew tired of Bert (whittington IV) and Ernie (Alan Hester) hoisting up bricks. Freeman showed he could knock down a shot or two. Three years later he is on the verge of being the all-time three point leader at Ohio.

Add Rick Scarberry to that list as for %, he was money from the corner and was a huge asset off the bench for those Danny Nee squads against the zone.

Couple points...

1. Gus hit more 3's than Geno. On one hand, I always thought Gus was very underrated. On the other hand, I never thought he reached his true potential. The knees didn't help, but I always enjoyed watching him play.

2. Freeman will probably pass Geno @ Akron, but it would be cool to see him stick a dagger in Geno's gut against Kent at the Convo on the 15th. Maybe do the throat slash sign after he passes Geno....wishful thinking.

This may be an unpopular statement, but I want to see Tommy shoot A LOT more and have more plays designed specifically for him. I also think he should be our leading scorer, almost purely from draining those beautiful 3s. If we had a good frontcourt like Leon or Tillman, or a shotmaker like Basset...I wouldn't feel this way. But with the way things are going now with the offense, I think this is one of the best options we have at scoring. Right now, Tommy is a 4 for 8 type of shooter, which is great...But given the state of our offense, I wouldn't mind seeing more like 8 for 20. Obviously, a lot depends on how the opponent is defending us.

When I saw this thread, I assumed it was for the inane number of flops Tommy takes in a game. One of those came at a critical point in yesterday's game and resulted in a virtually uncontested layup for RMU with the score tied.

You gotta admit he has taken a lot of legit charges in his career. If I'm not mistaken, he holds the Indiana HS career record for charges taken.

Tommy rarely gets beat on defense or picks up a lot of fouls, and each of those charges he takes is every bit as valuable as a steal. If he got a steal credited for each offensive foul he caused, there would be a measureable number in the box score. I, for one, love the effort he puts forth. There are matchups he struggles with, but overall Tommy is very solid on defense. He would be even more impressive on offense if we had any inside game to free him up for for spot-up jumpers.

You are correct. I took the time to look it up and found that he has the top 2 seasons at 28 and 29 his junior and senior years. I talked to a couple of referee buddies of mine who talked about the way he anticipated and took lanes away. We have a lot of kids here in Indiana who anticipate and are taught to take that charge but those guys say in the games they worked he did it better than most they had ever seen.

SBH alludes to flopping which I am sure may be his take on things but I have rewatched several games as I noted that Freeman is not setting up as often as he had in the past. If you watch Norfolk, Temple or Robert Morris games you will see that Freeman has taken to challenging shots and rising up with his player in some cases going chest to chest while keeping his hands retracted rather than getting called for arms or slapping fouls. I had remarked on this earlier this year and wondered why the change. That SBH would dismiss this nuance just tells me he don't really watch the games very close. I replayed the one under the basket over and over. To me it looks like Freeman took away the baseline drive and held his ground. You will see him argue with the ref afterward. Those refs i have talked to about him said he will politely tell you if you missed a call that he believes he should have got otherwise he just accepts it and goes about business. You guys can take some time and look at it to tell me if you have a different take on the sequence. One of the referees I talked to who is a military recruiter during the day and has worked multiple state finals said he had written his dad a letter to tell him how impressed he was with Tommy and the way he conducts business on the court. Said he had never done that before or since. SBH, I wish you would really take a look at stuff before commenting and think about what you are trying to impart based on a fleeting glimpse or a feeling held by many that if a fellow is setting up and taking charges that they must be floppers. Most of those guys study film and see things unfold before them and knowing tendences and traits know whether to slide in or not.

EDIT. I should add that one of the things I see about Freeman is the way he plays defense off the ball. Obviously he understands help Side defense and rotations off the ball. Very frequently this will put you in position to be ready for a charge to be taken. Being a bit Gonzo is not a prerequisite but guys who give it up forr the team are more likely to step in there and take a pounding.If you were to watch Purdue, Butler, Indiana State or any team that is loaded with our kids from here you will see many of the same plays from kids who were taught the same way. Painter teaches defense that way. Whenever Tipton played Delta where Freeman was till 8th grade we always got our fill of tenacious defense.

While I agree with 99% of what has been said on this thread, it should also be pointed out that while TF is currently 4th on the team in minutes, he is 7th in FTA. Being an excellent FT shooter (81%), TF should shot-fake on the 3 and attack the basket more than he currently does. This would keep the defenses from playing him to only shoot the 3. He currently has 83 3pt attempts and only 24 2pt attempts (even if all 16 of his FTA were off 2pt attempts, that's only 8 more 2pt attempts--32 max). This seems to be too high of a ratio of 3's to 2's. Perhaps him driving more would create additional opportunities for Devo, Keely, Baltic, etc. Not to pile on, (I really do like TF and most of his game) but 1 rebound per game (10th on the team) is way too low for someone who spends a lot of time near the paint on D.
When TF and Devo start playing better at both ends of the floor, the TEAM will respond and the wins will pile up.

Tommy would already have the 3-point record if TOS would have managed his minutes properly during his Freshman year. One of the biggest mistakes of the TOS era.
