I caught the end of the Fiami-BGSUCKS game on ESPNU and noticed the usual sparse crowd at Mullett Hall.  The official attendance was just over 2,000 in a 9,000-seat arena.  Has OU ever had a Saturday MAC home game that drew only 2,000?

A couple of weeks ago they played Kent in what was billed as their  biggest home game in six years. That night I'm reading their fan site and they were all thanking the students for creating a "nuthouse" atmosphere so I'm thinking they musta had 6,000-7,000  at the game. When I checked the box score it was just over 2,000.

Easy explanation for light attendance: Miami Sucks.

Not sure why the decline, but I'm wondering if ice hockey has become the sport of choice.  When you are constantly in the mix for a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, folks take notice.  Even if there are only 50-60 teams playing for that championship.

They never draw. Even when they have great players and teams, nada.

Miami was a good MAC draw 10-15 years ago when they had Wally Szczerbiak. Miami hoops was seriously good and not just another solid MAC basketball team like the past decade. The Miami hockey program played in an old arena and usually was not very good out of the CCHA. At Miami the Hockey program has stolen the lunch of the Men's basketball program and I don't see basketball getting it back at least until Charlie Coles retires. As some has said though Miami may be lucky to have a decent coach such as Coles with such a low budget for men's basketball and any replacement would struggle at the school. The strenght of the men's basketball league has shifted to NE Ohio with Kent and Akron reloading and an advantage with the MAC tourney in their backyard for recruiting purposes. Ohio is still a factor in the MAC without Hockey and strong alumni support in the Cleveland area. Ohio is a more comprehensive school then Miami as well making it easier to recruit to.

Wes is correct about fan support at Miami.  They used to have Millett completely open with nearly 10,000 capacity.  I attended two games there in the 90s that were sold out.  After the turn of the decade, Miami's attendance dropped off and they ended up closing off part of the arena and dropping capacity to around 6,000.

It would help the MAC if Miami could revitalize men's basketball attendance.  I agree that the success of hockey has hurt their basketball support.

The precipitous dropoff would explain the popular new t-shirt:  "Miami:  We're the new Buffalo."

Why do you feel the need to insult Buffalo this way?

I'd prefer to say, "Temple: We're the new Miami"!  I think that clearly points out the pecking order -- from the bottom up -- in FBS football as well as MAC basketball.

Isn't "We are Miami" insulting enough?

They had some very good teams in the late 70's with Archie Aldridge and Randy Ayers. I believe they won the MAC and beat Marquette, who was the defending NCAA champ. Every time we played there it was almost empty. I did go to an Ohio-Miami game there when Wally played and it was half full.
