Since the MAC East goes 4-0 tonight and sends a majority to the MAC quarterfinals, for like, forever.

Tie the MAC payout for NCAA units to the East v. West matchups. Say for instance the MAC gets two units, like it earned a year ago, and the MAC East won 85% of head-to-head matchups against the West in that season, then  MAC East teams split 85% of revenue v. 15% for the MAC West schools.

Just a thought, and apologies if it's not original.

Thoughts?

I'm confused how that would lead to more competitive balance because it would just widden the gap between east/west. I mean it'd be let giving the NBA lottery picks to the spurs, celtics and lakers instead of the cavs wiz and kings the strong would just get stronger.

Mike,

I've long been in favor of something like this. In my mind, Eastern Michigan shouldn't get a dime of basketball or football revenue. My thinking is that we fine teams for football/basketball RPI/Sagains in excess of a certain number. Maybe it would deter them from letting Ramsey coach there for six years. Not distributing the revenue would accomplish the same thing.

Does anybody have a breakdown of what teams are spending on basketball? Is Eastern's lack of success a direct result of their spending less?   If Eastern is spending an inordinate amount less than I'm all for it but if they aren't I don't see this being a solution.  I think it creates a bigger divide.

Back in December when I pulled a bunch of data comparing MAC basketball spending to the Horizon and CAA, I found that EMU was pretty consistently 10th or 11th in basketball budget among the MAC schools.  For instance, in 2009 they spent $1.22 million on basketball, which was 10th in the league, and roughly 20% below the league average of $1.5 million.  Along with EMU, BGSU, CMU, and Buffalo are traditionally the four lowest spenders in the league.

Someone mentioned on the MAC board that NIU had set a record by losing 20 games five years in a row.  I looked up the other MAC teams and found something that astounded me.  CMU has only had 2 seasons with a record over .500 in the last 23 years.  Prior to Ernie Zeigler they had a stretch of single digit wins in 9 of the previous 12 seasons.  They have been far worse than everybody's whipping boy, EMU.

I think many folks pass them along because of recent football success, whereas EMU has been largely useless in both arenas.  They have great non-revenue sports, but that is just the problem... no revenue.

Plus, Central Michigan had the more recent success, winning an NCAA Tournament game with Chris Caveman.  That is an amazingly poor record though.

The problem I have with EMU is attendance.  There is absolutely no excuse to have 800 people at a game.

Perhaps they should change their name to the Hurons.
