The Marietta College Pioneers won the regular season and conference tournament championships in the Ohio Athletic Conference men's play this year.

Now, MC has been chosen to host an NCAA Div. III First and Second Round tournament.  This four team event will take place tonight and Saturday night.

It's been a long time since Marietta won a conference basketball title.  Good luck to the Pioneers in this weekend!

A note for Ruck:  Marietta is really good.  They could have been very competitive in the MAC this year...

I'm still rooting for LaRoche  (PA) to come out of Ban Johnson Fieldhouse and advance after reading the story about their coach in another thread on this site.  I was going to go up and watch it tonight, but my wife played the veto card on that being a fun family outing.

If your name is Bernhard Debatin, and you are a professor of journalism at Ohio University, you believe this is the division the Ohio Bobcats should be competing in.

But no, congrats to Marietta.  I went to a game there a couple years ago and they were not good, glad to see they turned it around.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Marietta wins and advances to the second round game vs. Wittenberg tonight.

Funny side note:  The last time MC was in an NCAA regional, 35 years ago, was also against Wittenberg in the second round.  Yours truly was there for that contest won by Wittenberg.

I watched both teams play in their respective first round games yesterday. Wittenburg was in person and MC was on TV because it was sold out. from what I could tell it should be a very entertaining game. Wittenburg has a very good active center and good ball handlers.  MC has some very good guards and forwards. The center from Wittenburg gets emotional when calls don't go his way though. I am not just talking fouls, but also things like turnovers and balls out of bounds. Maybe Marietta can work him a little to take him out of the game.

Marietta defeated Wittenberg, 63-62, to win the second round game and advance to the NCAA Div. III Sweet 16.  It was a close game the whole way, with Wittenberg leading most of the game.

Congrats to the Pioneers!

Does Marietta have a new gym since 1970?  They hosted my high school's OHSAA tournament districts there back then and I loved that place.  A real gem of a fieldhouse.  Probably pretty dreadful by 2011 standards but for a small HS it was a great venue.

It's in the same building but it has been completely remodeled and refurbished.  I think the seating capacity is actually a little smaller now, but it's a cleaner look.  Doesn't seem a like a field house any more.

The old field house was where I cut my teeth as a college basketball fan...before I attended Ohio.

Had a chance to watch the pioneer-tiger game on the net tonight. Great game and great finish. How did that freshman guard wind up in d3? I saw him kill otterbein also on a game ending shot  earlier this year. If Marietta plays Wooster next week that will be the place to be. Wooster always rocks the house and add in marietta and what a great scene that would be. Now if only the pipers are playing next week.

Thanks for posting this. Congrats to the Pioneers and a friend of mine on the team, Trevor Halter, one of their leaders. I know Trevor and his family well. Great kid and and even better ball player.

Interesting reading about the OAC.  I have a cousin who played for the Lady Pioneers in early to mid 1990s.  Also, I went to Wittenberg my first semester in college, before I transferred back to Ohio.  I say transferred back because I had taken a summer school class right after graduating from Athens High School, and, of course, I'm a "townie."   Those are both good schools, with interesting histories and traditions.  Small schools do have their advantages.  I still remember one of the strange traditions at WU.  When a coach or a senior administrator was addressing a group of students they would chant, "Roll 'em up, roll 'em up, roll 'em up."  At that point the person in question would roll their pants legs up to about halfway to the knee.  The students would then clap and shout their approval, and the person would continue to say whatever it was they were going to say.  This was done to show some kind of mutual respect.  I wonder if they still do it.  I wonder how female administrators or coaches would respond nowadays -- maybe by rolling up their blouse sleeves or something like that.  At any rate, it was one of the strangest traditions that I've seen, but it was actually a very nice thing.  I think you really had to live through it to understand it.  Also, I think it's one of those things that add charm to a small school.  In my freshman dorm I had three roommates, one of whom was a football player.  There was one dorm for all freshmen men and you really ended knowing just about everyone in your class.  When you went to cheer for a basketball game or football game, even as a freshman, you knew many of the players personally.  It's just a different world from OU.  Sometimes I think it's a better one, but all and all my heart still bleeds green and white.  Go OHIO!

Interesting tradition at wittenberg. My favorite tradition is the pipers of wooster comming down off the hill leading the team into the football stadium. Too bad this has had to be changed a little for the next two years(construction of new facilities). It will return though in the future. It is one tradition that should be seen and can be on youtube. If you are a scot or a scot at heart it is a must.

The team was recognized last night at the annual Marietta Area Chamber dinner.  There were over 600 community leaders in attendance.  They showed a highlight video played to “One Shinning Moment” while the team stood on stage and received a standing ovation.  Nice to see the community gets behind the team.

Especially when it's been 36 years since they appeared in the post-season.  That program has been really down.

Tough for a Muskie to post this but everyone likes a success story plus my daughter played VB at Marietta for four years.
