Bassett punching some clown over whether LeBron or Kobe is better=STUPID!
Bassett going pro, not getting drafted, getting cut in Kazaakastturkistan or someplace like that, and eventually getting busted back in Indiana=STUPID!
Steve Coleman going Stevie Fresh and having to read Bobcat Love critique of rap music=STUPID!
Alex Kellogg losing the passion=STUPID!
Sayles getting let go then coming back because the rest of the team bailed: STUPID! (not Asown's problem)
Blowing a nine-point lead with 2 minutes left and putting the game within reach of Jerry Sauder's whistle=STUPID!

Not stupid: Freeman, Devaughn and the rest of the crew that busted their asses.

You summed it up well, Mike.

Another season like this, and we'll officially be a football school.  I really hope that the transfers and the incoming freshman can fill some holes.  We just don't have anyone who can take this team on his shoulders when the going gets rough -- at least not consistently.  We need a go-to-guy in crunch time.  We just don't have him now.  Okay, sorry for ranting, but it's off to bed with me.  See you guys on the football board talking spring practice and poor out-of-conference scheduling and arguing who is going to be the starting QB next year.  GO OHIO!

When the season ended last year, I felt so good about the chances for this season. At that point, we were losing only KVK from a second-round NCAA team! But when Bassett punched the bouncer, that was the beginning of the series of misfortune that struck this team ... which Mike covered.

This team never totally developed an identity. It got hot for a bit, but I think there wasn't as much of a veteran feel as last year's team had. And hey, losing Bassett can't be understated -- the guy was dominant at the end of last season. Even without him, it still feels like this team coulda/shoulda won the MAC, so tonight was really sad.

Here's hoping we can go an offseason without any drama (no defections) and come back strong. I wish Tommy and Devo the best.

Bassett, Coleman, A Kellogg - Scapegoats?

Way I look at it - if they didn't want to be here at the beggining of the season - they most likely would not have been "productive" if they stayed - may have led to other issues/defections - I was over them like 33 games ago............

Congrats to Tommy, Devo, Sayles and Tunji for a winning senior season, in spite the above..............

Okay, you may be right about the bolded. But admit it, Tunji and Sayles, nothing against them, wouldn't have even been on the team if not for the "above." Either way, it was all pretty STUPID except the effort of those who suited up.

And I hope we expect more than a "winning season."

Tunji/Sayles? Well - they showed up/contributed - to the "team", more than I or you did on the floor at practices or games.

I do expect more than just a "winning" season, but I certainly did not have super high expectations going into this year. On the "predict record" thread at beginning of season - I think I said 22-13, and I remember thinking others would think I was not enthusiastic enough as many were predicting incredible results, after an incredible last year followed by all the above reffered to defections. My gut was telling me more like - well - where we finished.......

I'm just happy that Groce was able to pull out a decent record from a team that looked like it was in the toilet in the end of Jan. Its not saying much but Groce is slowly proving he is one of the better coaches in the MAC. He had the more talented team tonight but a few miscues by Ricardo Johnson a true freshman were probably enough to have cost the team the game. There was simply no quality depth on the roster this year. The program made a run in the NCAAs last year but I think its going to be one of these deals where the true turning point from going from a solid MAC team to a regular NCAA type program will come after this program can climb the mountain and win a MAC regular season championship. We are getting there but its just building blocks and it looks like a few more will arrive next season, enough i hope to finish with a better overall MAC record, win 20+, and make a post season tourney.

Agree with Wes... It would be a lot more heartbreaking to me if we had been 26-5 as a 1 seed and got upset by an 8-seed to miss the tournament.  The losses to the Robert Morris and Oakland squads, etc. showed me that this team was not as good as I'd hoped going into the season.

The bench was very weak and they were poor tonite. Anytime Baltic or Washington were out we fell apart.  Keely is a big drop off from Baltic/Washington. Johnson/Hall make big mistakes.  These players will improve like Baltic did this year or get burried on the bench. Groce had more depth next year. He has to keep the team together. They could be very good, but no seniors next year.

This year we were thin at the 2 guard spot as Bassett, Coleman and Kinney all left the program.  Kellogg, Johnson and Hall played a lot more than anyone expected. They were up and down as freshmen often are.  If they improve in the off season they should help us.

The frosh will improve.  But will any improve as much as the leap that Baltic showed?  He had that breakout game of about 23 points and, wow, it was like night an day in terms of his scoring.  I'm betting that his avg before the breakout was about 8.5 ppg and about 18 ppg after the breakout.  The guy came on!  BOOM

This season sucked.  We should have been so much better.  SOOOO many frustrating moments, culminating last night.  But at least now we can move on to next year not being the favorites, because we all know how well that turns out for us!

We had a good chance to win this tourney, and in the MAC that's all you can ask. We do have a go to guy in Cooper. I didn't see the game, but if we're up by 9 late and we have the best guard in the league, I like our chances. I know we missed free throws, but how did we let this one get away?

We missed some shots that we should have made......or put up some shots that we shouldn't have.

I love D.J. and Eyevo....but they both missed some critical shots near the end.  Baltic missed a free throw and one of his shots just rolled off the rim. D.J. fired an NBA 3 when what we needed was some clock eatin time.

We'll be O.K. next year in the backcourt with Kellogg....Offaut....Johnson.... newcomers Mitchell and Stevie Taylor.  and D.J.  The up front guys will need to step up big time.

Come on, Andrew, the season didn't suck -- only some moments (those stretches that seemed like hours between Bobcat scores ... culminating with the finish of reg last night). Very streaky, unpredictable team.

But when you think about it, wasn't it that way last year, too?  After OUr team beat Georgetown, I told friends that if we shot like that against Tennessee, the Vols would be going home.  Teams that live by the J die by the J. Gotta have dependable if not spectacular "bigs" to avoid scoring droughts.

You want to look at a season that was filled with "suckery," just check out the MAC West!

Go Cats!

You used Alex Kellog as a reason this basketball season was "stupid"?  The kid didn't want to play and wanted to focus on his school.  And you call the guy out for it?

I know this was probably a post out of frustration, but come on; most D1 athletes parents wish their kid was this dedicated to academics; imagine how Armon Basset's folks feel.

Overall, this season was bad considering what we expected, but it could have been a lot worse.

I could not disagree more. I have been very unimpressed with his bench leadership.  We lost 3-4 games this year based almost entirely on bad decisions from the bench in critical situations.  He has shown NO ability or willingness to get in DJ's face when he takes horrendous shots in tight games.  Make no mistake, DJ took 2 very bad shots early in the shot clock in the last 2 minutes when we should have been working the ball inside. Cost us the game.  I watched him come back to the bench during subsequent timeouts and Groce didn't say a freakin' word to him. Groce seems to me to be a very arrogant, self-assured guy who is not willing to look in the mirror and say, "my bad."  He's certainly had plenty of opportunities to do so in the past three years - I'd say his coaching inadequacies have cost us 10 games minimum during his tenure.

No he didn't.  One of the plays you are referring to came with 14 minutes left.  The second one was even earlier than that.  I agree that neither were good shots but neither came close to costing us the game in the last two minutes.

Offensively, yes.  Defensively, no.  I thought that Keely was our best interior defender down the stretch.  I've said it elsewhere, but his defense on Justin Greene in the first half of the win at Kent was huge.  That game got away from us as soon as Reggie got the 3 quick fouls in 20 seconds in the second half.  After that, we couldn't stop Kent in the paint.

We all want Keely to be the next in the Trent, Hunter, Leon line of low post scorers, but just because he's not a 16 PPG guy doesn't mean he is worthless.  A taller Terren Harbut can still be quite valuable.

Good point, but that's not exactly what I meant. Sure, it's great to focus on academics. But perhaps getting nearly two free years of college education to play basketball and never playing in a game, all while holding a scholarship spot that could have been used by someone who actually played, not so great. (maybe A Kellogg turned down scholarship money this year, I don't know.)

I don't necesarily think he's worthless. That's a harsh statement. I agree that yes he can be very valuable on the defensive end. However, as big as he is, he's deceptively weak in the paint. I've seen mulitple times where the ball is just taken out of his hands when he had complete control. I dont think he's got great hands either, but a lot of big guys don't. Reggie is what he is. He's a solid MAC contributor.

I don't know if I'm totally down with "Stupid" as the characterization for the season. But I'll sure sign on for "Unnecessary Drama". Sweet Jeebus we had enough for a decade.
