The band at the bottom?

And they said we were on drugs in the late 60's early 70's.

My favorite part is that they put the band last while asking for 100 grand to put on a concert.

and they try to justify the concert as a means to "counter the effectsof.. block parties and festivals." yeah, like putting Matchbox 20 in the Convo is going to dampen Palmerfest.

I would need to know more about the 110's financial needs before I react to passionately to this report but in general I'd say that I would be surprised if there wasn't a great need. They were correct in stating that "the Marching 110 is a significant part of OU's image" and its important that we properly support and protect it.

Completely agree with that prioritization.  Student Affairs should be at the top because the impact over the entire university.  Athletics makes sence where it is because of the exposure and entertainment it provides the university.  Graduate College is bigger than the 110.  I love the 110, but this makes perfect sense.  Athletics provides a venue for the 110 to perform and be seen.  Athletics being number 2 is a win for the 110.

Have to agree with VOR on this one.  The problem is that they were given four choices.  It's kind of like ranking 3 point shooters - Tommy Freeman, Dave Jamerson, Steve Esterkamp and Gus Johnson - all made over 200 attempts in their OU careers and all were great players.  How do you rank them?  Someone has to be fourth and I'll personally take any of them.  Same with these four things - student affairs, athletics, graduate college, 110 - they are all important but something has to be 4th.

Ironically in 2009, this same committee (different members) rated band 7th out of 7.

Why should the band be anywhere but the bottom?

I appreciate the band and all, but for most students they are at most a complement to intercollegiate athletics.

Student affairs affects every student, intercollegiate athletics affect more students than the band and is ultimately the main source of attention for the band, graduate college (teaching assistants, etc) directly applies to academics and certainly affects more students directly than the band.

The 110 is certainly a great facet of Ohio University, but I can't see it being ranked above any of the other three.

...

Edit:

Because the 110 is the equivalent of bringing a big name artist to the Campus.

It's not the equivalent.  It's way better.  I wouldn't want that much money to go to bringing in some musical act nobody will remember in three years.  Maybe that's just me.

The point is, it's a ridiculous question in the first place.

It is a list of four important groups. Something had to finish fourth.

I'm a little surprised that athletics tops grad school.

$100 Gs for a concert? That's not only excessive, but it's counter to every other austerity measure that's been enacted over the past several years.

Hammer meet nail.

What's funny is the fact that for much of the past 30 years we've seen students leave football games AFTER they've seen the band.

So much for the band as an extension of Ohio.....I guess I was the only one who taped the Rose Parade when OUr band was there.

I live in a small town where the band director is an Ohio grad and of course has modeled his high school band after his alma mater......the locals may not even know from whence this band came.....but they talk about how unique and different it is.

They will easily profit off the concert if they know what they are doing (questionable).  They will fill the Convo to the brim for B.O.B., even at prices like $50...  Do the math...  13,000 if they fill the whole arena, even if they only want to do half of it, it's still 6,000 people.

I've seen crazier things happen.
