I remember a thread discussing sound options for the Convo being the reason it is not utilized...

I ask because there is a HUGE name coming into the Convo...
http://thepost.ohiou.edu/content/bob-play-may-20-show-convo
Also of note, this is the day before Athens other big music show... 8fest.  One wild weekend.

I've seen crazier things happen.

That is sweet. Looks like the perfect weekend to make a Spring trip over to Athens.

More of The Post at its best.

This makes me remember the rumors that Larry Hunter refused to move a few practices to allow Pearl Jam to appear in the Convo.  Now that was a great rumor.

I don't know about this rumor, but when I was part of the Pop Concert Committee in 1979-80, there was an administrative committee that wordetermined which dates would be available for the various campus groups at both the Convo and Mem Aud.

We had an opportunity to use dates not needed for academic or athletic purposes. These dates were shared with other campus programming groups. I don't recall a specific accomodation by athletics to use the Convo, but I know they were open to the conversation. Winter quarter was the toughest to secure datesin the Convo due to the number of sports using it.

I don't know if resources funneled back into athletics based on use of the Convo, but I'm sure a fee was assessed to cover rental and building services.

For those of you in the know (students or recent grads), will this show sell?  To be honest, I've never heard of the guy and I still subscribe to Rolling Stone.

B.O.B. is a pretty big name, and will definitely sell.  Especially with a large number of visitors coming in for the weekend for 8fest.

Department makes no money when other campus groups use the facilities, so if Student Affairs is putting on the event the only money to be made is $5.00 pops at the concession stands which students do not purchase.  As for teaming with 8 Fest and having more people because of it, few will be in any shape to attend an indoor concert after swilling beer all day and the enticement to attend a "dry" venue after getting your engine ready to party is not a real appeal.

As for a draw, what do you call a good draw in an arena that seats 10k or more for a concert?

Nice try Buzz Killington, but the concert is the night before 8Fest.

Good news for those who don't want to "first night it."

Hmmm, all this talk has me thinking that perhaps we need a star-studded Live Aid'esque concert to benefit the athletic department!

We could have the banjo-man, that guy who plays late-night guitar by the burrito buggy, Southeast Engine. I will certainly make the trip to Athens.

I was there too... probably sitting right down the row from you.

Section 1 missed you last night, btw.

More like 30+ years as REO was one of 3 Convo shows in the Fall of 1979 (so I guess George is correct, it was over 20 years).

That was my freshman year and led me to believe that every quarter was going to have multiple shows in the Convo. Then The Who concert incident in Cincinnati happened that December and I believe that had something to do with fewer shows being booked in the future for the Convo.

The REO concert I'm thinking of was in spring (or maybe late winter) of '81. I was still in high school in fall '79... my freshman year at OU was 80-81 and that was when Blue Oyster Cult, Molly Hatchet, and REO played in the Convo.

He's pretty big. I, for one, am excited enough that I might make the trip back to Athens. I was looking for an excuse to come back in May anyway (like you really need an excuse haha).

B.o.B. has been nominated for Grammy's and MTV Video Music Awards and performed at both ceremonies. He performed with Bruno Mars at this years Grammy's. He has had three top ten singles:

Why the hell did I open my mailbox on Monday and find Snooki on the cover of my Rolling Stone...  Unbelievable...

I "don't" have any memory of attending an ELP concert in the Convo 33 years ago...............

"Do" remember quite a bit of Marshall Tucker (Great), and Neil Young (Trans/Computor Nerd Faze - OK) all about the same time.

I think your memory is spot on, Athena. That show was late winter/early spring and the High Infidelity record was #1 in the nation. BTW -- The guys in the band and some of the crew hung around Athens for a few hours afterward and play basketball (among themselves) over at Grover Center.

Bobcatsquared was right about having three Convo shows during fall 1979. They were headlined by Styx, Kansas and Foreigner. The only other Convo show that academic year featured Waylon Jennings with Buddy Holly's Original Crickets opening up. Also brought to town  by the Pop Concert Committee that academic year were The Bar-Kays with BSCPB, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes and Marcel Marceau.

If anyone is interested in talking more about the industry during that era and/or why the pace of shows slowed down, just send me a PM. It was a great time to be a student at OU and involved in campus life.

I'd just like to say I'm highly jealous -- there has been one concert in four years here I've bought tickets to... and even it wasn't a band I would've seen if they weren't a three minute walk out my back door or got really excited about.

I know this concert will draw college students, probably en masse, but I just don't care for much "popular music" these days, and care even less for most of what UPC has brought in.

Ben Folds I might've considered seeing, but was otherwise engaged, and I saw Jimmy Eat World freshman year at MemAud.

I didn't go to any concerts at my team at OU from 2000-04. The only big concert I remember in my time was Busta Rhymes. There might have been one other decent one, but there was never anything I was very interested in.

Post reporting that the opening act has been selected.  Far East Movement.

Not my personal preference in music, but I think that is definitely a show that will sell.  Applause to UPC for bringing two acts each with a #1 charting hit within the last year to town.
