Living in Maryland this was huge news around here yesterday and today.  Can you imagine what was going through Mark Gottfried's mind as he's sitting next to Yow yesterday as she says that Gary Williams sabotaged her coaching search?  I'm surprised he didn't just stand up and say "Check, please."

Some things that have come out in the last couple of days that I didn't know about the Gary Williams-Debbie Yow issues.  At the time Debbie Yow left Maryland had the 4th highest revenue in men's basketball in the ACC. They were dead last in coaching staff salaries.  The womens basketball coaching staff was paid more than Gary's staff even though the men's team made millions for the university every year and the women's team loses money. Gary petitioned every year for raises for his coaches but was denied each year.

Yow loudly trumpets to anyone that will listen that Maryland won 20 National Championships during her tenure at Maryland.  Now the rest of the story. Of those 20 banners, 14 were won by coaches already in place when she was hired. Of the remaining 6, 4 were won by cheerleading.   From listening to the DC area media the last couple of days it sounds like she made it next to impossible for Williams to recruit successfully.  She then tried to get him fired and when the public found out about it there was such an uproar that she left.

Her defenders will point out that she did a lot of good things at Maryland which she did but all of it involved fundraising and women's sports.  I'm all for women's sports getting a fair shake but not at the expense of your only money maker.  So while winning a National Championship in most places makes your life easier apparently it did just the opposite at Maryland.
