It was intriguing that, in the spirit of an open exchange of ideas, Senderoff revealed much about Kent’s defensive techniques in front of Ohio coach John Groce, one of his chief rivals in the Mid-American Conference. And Groce, in turn, explained the approach behind the “Phoenix” style of fast break.

“It was the first retreat I’d been to where I had a guy from our league sitting right in front of me,” Groce said. “Rob and I laughed afterward. I know at the end of the shot clock what they’re going to run; he knows what we’re going to run. In some respects, there are no secrets involved.”
