Good luck getting any good up-and-coming coach to sign on with Kent after this.

If you aren't going to enforce the terms of the buyout, why even put it in the contract?

I'm not taking an anti-Geno stance here, but if you sign on the dotted line of the contract for a buyout, then you should have to pay the buyout if you leave.

If Bradley signs a deal to pay him $750k and decides not to pay him, you can bet your ass Geno's going to sue them for not sticking to the terms of the contract.

This is really a pretty open and shut case in my view. Geno owes Bradley $1.2 million. Tough pill to swallow, but he works the first couple years at Bradley for free.

Love is right on the money. It's cut and dried. If Geno has an advisor, the first thing you talk about is the buyout. " Hey Geno, 1.2 is a lot scratch. Is Bradley going to make you whole or are you willing to eat it?" Case closed. Maybe the deal is really for 500k and the other 250 is for the buyout.

NCAA problem across the board, just rarely enforced. WVU did it with Rich Rod, and that is one of the first publicized cases I can remember.

You are correct, this could have repercussions on Kents end as well, when it comes to new coaches and contracts.

BL is right.  Geno must pay.  I really don't see any repercussions down the road for Kent.  Golly, all they are doing is enforcing part of Geno's contract.  I think Kent is totally in the right here, and -- unlike BL -- I've been a big Geno fan in the past.  He actually went to our church during part of his stay in Athens, and my wife had him as a student.  But, he seems to be very confused here about this obligations.

Put yourself in the place of the KSU AD and boosters.  Those athletic dept dollars are hard to come by.  I'd be all over Jim Schauss if he didn't go after a coach who blew Ohio off to the tune of $1.2 MM.  Sorry, Geno.  I hope your attorney has GREAT negotation skills.

I've heard that KSU's AD is almost at the Tom Boeh level of dickiness and that Geno found it very difficult to work for him.  Guessing he made an emotional decision to bail as soon as he could - just can't believe he didn't negotiate the buyout into his new deal with Bradley.

Kent is right here and they should collect, the repercussions come when they try and land the next hotshot, or sign them to a long term deal with such a buyout, that person may balk.  Contracts for years have had these clauses however schools have failed to enforce them as the rule.

It amazes me how much people ignore terms of contracts in this country.  He should've been up front about it and negotiated a settlement right off the bat, perhaps negotiating with Bradley to pay some or all of the compromised amount.  I have no problems with Kent going after it...I would be pissed if someone walked about from a 1.2 mil contractual obligation to Ohio athletics and would be upset if the department didn't go after it.

I don't buy that it will hurt Kent's future coaching searches.  "Gee I like the program and the fit, I'd totally take the job if it wasn't for them actually being serious about their buyouts, so I'm walking."  Don't see that happening.

I agree this will have no long-term impact on KSU coaching hires. It will probably by forgotten by the time that Senderoff moves on. Now, candidates might be a bit more careful in agreeing to buyout clauses. But, of course, Kent St. could always use part of the $1.2M to make them feel more comfortable.

As fas as negotiating the buyout amount, once Geno decided to leave did he really have any leverage? Why would KSU agree to an amount less than the $1.2M in that situation? Further, did he he even have any leverage before taking the job? Why would KSU be interested in a negotiated buyout amount?

Hard to feel bad for college coaches these days.  Geno needs to fire his agent, that's for sure.

Couple of interesting things in this thread.

No one has commented on our current buy out status.

Bradley is most definitely a step up.....COnference affiliation is way superior. It is a Basketball school with no Football competition. CHicago recrutiing has been very strong at Bradley. COaching has been poor for many years so hopefully he can parlay this one into the job he wants though I believe Bradley is a destination above GOnzaga and Butler as far as a coaching stop. For some it is the perfect set up. There are very few Valley schools without name recognition which helps with scheduling and national legitimacy.

Geno needs to man up and Bradley should have been apprised of that Buy in the same way Michigan knew about Rodriguez' obligations were part of the negotiations with W Va

No kidding. That's an awful buyout clause. Good for Kent, bad for him.

Players on the KSU basketball team were upset they learned about Ford’s departure via a press release on Bradley University’s website, rather than in person from their coach.
“It’s not that he left,” KSU forward Justin Greene said previously. “I know this is a business. It’s how he left. You couldn’t tell us?”

Just noticed this part of the article.  That's pretty weak on Geno's part.

Ted - Lots of reasons...Legal fees, potentially not collecting (as has happenned in the past), secretely not caring for the current coach much anyway, avoiding PR issues of suing former coach, just wanting to move on to the next phase in the program, etc.  Had Geno been upfront about Bradley before accepting, I am sure a compromised amount could've been agreed upon.

Interesting discussion since I posted this rumor.

My two cents: Geno's move makes sense to me, as I think the ceiling as far as institutional support is higher at Bradley, and basketball is the game out there.  MVC is a clear-cut better league than the MAC at this point.

The comment about him finding a new agent is probably spot on, and it probably should've been negotiated.

Kent State in my mind has every right and reason to go after the full amount, and should they get it, it would make a nice little nest egg for raises in the coaching staff there.

Exactly. Normally the new school pays at least part of the buyout. I can't believe Bradley isn't going to pay any of it.
