Not saying it could not happen but that list is clearly casting a net that is solidly thrown in the ocean of the writer's own mind. Vast space in which to troll. .

How do you think an NBA Fan Base would respond to the hiring of John Groce as their Coach at this point in time?

Throw in his credentials of having worked with Greg Oden, and the whole thing becomes a bit more than questionable.

Can you see MJ thinking about his list of candidates to replace Paul Silas, and finally settling on John Groce?

I'm not saying it can't happen one day, but that's utter insanity for someone to throw that out there at this point and time.

Henry Abbott, who I like, seems to have quite the high opinion of Groce. Look at the rest of the names on this list.

The college coaches
  • Mike Krzyzewski Kobe Bryant has professed his admiration time and again, and the Lakers are coach-shopping.
  • John Calipari The name comes up plenty, and with William Wesley on his side he could command respect from big-name players. But does he really want to coach in the NBA, or a bigger deal from Kentucky?
  • Sean Miller "There were two guys who I knew, from the very start of their careers, would be great coaches," Stan Van Gundy tells ESPN's Kevin Arnovitz. "Sean Miller and Erik Spoelstra." David Thorpe says the Arizona coach “acts like a pro coach: He’s very composed, a very good teacher."
  • John Groce Ohio's coach, who was once Greg Oden's de facto offensive coordinator, is said to have an NBA playbook and demeanor.
  • Brad Stevens He's on plenty of short lists after pushing all the right buttons for Butler.
  • Billy Donovan No one doubts his ability to lead. His NBA issue is whether or not his dalliance with the Orlando Magic has disqualified him from the whole league, or just that one team.
  • Jay Wright Plenty of respect for the Villanova coach's abilities ... some speculate he may have stayed in college too long.
  • Jamie Dixon The Pitt coach has fans in NBA circles.
  • Bill Self The Kansas coach is well-liked, and has coached plenty of NBA players.

I appreciate your point, but given how dumb MJ is, I can assure you the answer would be YES!  MJ = insanity when it comes to management decisions.

I think it would be distant future for him, and that is if he's interested. No one is going to hire him anytime soon. They're just saying after some more experience, maybe at a bigger college level or maybe as an NBA assistant, he could work his way up to that. I think he does have a good basketball mind, and maybe some of his philosophies would be even better suited for the NBA. But I'm glad he's here for now.

I think you're reading it wrong. You need to read the article again.

Reminds me of the crazy things we would read about coach O'Shea thanks to his Andy Katz pipeline.

Crazy? Like a fox!

"Marin Bota, Ohio: Ohio coach Tim O'Shea said he Bota could be a star, although when he first saw the Auburn transfer last year he was closer to a bust. But the 7-foot, 260-pound center is as athletic a big man as O'Shea has coached. O'Shea sees NBA skills, and if that's the case, then the Bobcats have a shot to own one of the best mid-major frontlines with Brandon Hunter and Bota.

Bota used his redshirt season to simply become an offensive threat. He's still not as quick defensively, but he is imposing and O'Shea is billing him as one of the best-kept secrets, anxiously awaiting Saturday's practice."

Of all the pro sports leagues, it could happen in the NBA. Look at Vinny Del Negro. Nice NBA career, then in the broadcast booth. Never once coached a team, not even CYO. Never paid his dues as an assistant. He not only gets the Bulls job, but gets fired and gets another NBA job! Only in the NBA. So coach Groce, it could happen to you.

Of the first three groupings -- big names, assistants and college coaches -- Groce would be at the bottom for head coach.  All the others either have NBA experience or have gone deep into the NCAA tournament as a head coach.  At best (for Groce) right now, he could be offered an NBA assistant post if one came open.  That could change if he gets results over the next 2-3 years.

By the way, I think the writer's sources are way off base with Coach K.  He has a job -- and millions -- for life at Duke (unless he pulls a Tressel) so why should he trade sainthood to start over with over-paid, over-egoed, under-achieving NBAers and the unhappy fans and press that goes along with it?

But do you think Coack K will stay at Duke until he retires? If Phil Jackson stays by his words and retires after this year, Coach K will be the first name on the list to be the next Lakers coach. That is quite a gig.

I've heard him say in an interview before that last time the Lakers job was open, he seriously considered it before turning it down to stay at Duke.

I think that was 100% posturing.

Agreed.  My guess is he was blowing smoke in order to get more in his next contract at Duke.  Probably keeps the illusion alive through his agent and others for his next contract.  The guy's 64 years old.  Why should he leave a job where 99% of the fans think he can do no wrong to go someplace where maybe 3/4 of the fans will think he can do nothing right?

I bet New Mexico State fans would've said the same before Reggie Theus started his first year.  You never know.
