A Chitown blogger thinks it's a good idea:

Sounds interesting.  The two conferences have a similar geographic footprint and could maybe strike a regional TV deal (with STO as the flagship) to help spark some interest.  I'm not a big fan of the Big 6 "challenges" because they too often don't pit equal teams against one another.  But this one may be fun, if done right.

I talked to him about this a little bit. We agreed it won't happen without TV, and TV isn't likely to be interested.

This is a really interesting idea.  I think it would more entertaining games and better away crowds if it was Youngstown, Wright, or Cleveland.

I would put  games at NBA arenas in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Indianapolis.  With triple headers at each venue.  It would give basketball fans tremendous value.

Cleveland would have
CSU vs Ohio
YSU vs Akron
Wright St vs Kent State

Detroit would get
Detroit vs Toledo
UW-GB vs BGSU
EMU vs Oakland (Summit league)

Indianapolis would get
Butler vs Miami
Valpo vs Buffalo
IUPUI(summit) vs Ball State

Chicago would get
Loyola vs NIU
UIC vs WMU
UW Milwaukee vs CMU

Build it and they will come.  I don't think you need TV. Events like this spark interest and interest sells tickets.  We aren't on TV for the Bracket Buster many years but it still builds interest around here.   This makes for an interesting event and gives you a game you don't have to work on scheduling.  Not sure I see a downside for either conference.

I think it would do much better with home crowds.  I envision nearly empty arenas for this type of setup.

Instead of renting out the NBA arenas they could play on campus and have 4 host schools bid on the games. Maybee play 3 games in three nites where we play CSU, Wright State and Youngstown State.  Butler would have the money to support it. Maybee Toledo and perhaps UW Milwaukee puts up the money.  Our ability to outbid the other schools in our bracket to host would be likely. By having the biding that would generate some money for the two conferences.

I still think that's a recipe for empty arenas.  The people in Toledo aren't going to go watch Wright State against Akron or Eastern Michigan.   Do it just like the ACC-Big 10 does.   TV would be nice but not necessary IMO.  It just gives us a game with a little more meaning than your standard OOC game. Plus it would be nice to have a chance to get Butler in Athens.

I agree, this doesn't work unless its at home sites. Outside of Kent or Akron getting Butler at the Q, I don't think any non-campus sites would work at all.
