Utah State is doing a 2 for 1 involving the football team: football goes to USC; and the schools do a home and home with the basketball teams:

http://collegebasketball.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1239258

May be worth doing.

Not a bad strategy.  For us, the Big 10 and Big East teams would obviously make the most sense.  I don't know about the likely hood of being able to get some of these schools to do something like this, but ideal targets would have to be:  MSU, Indiana, Pitt, Cinci, Illinois, Minnesota, Penn St, Purdue, Louisville, UConn, Syracuse, and WVU.  All would be winnable football games, and all would be huge draws coming into Athens for a bball game.

Obviously it'd be tough to get some of those schools to agree with it, as a few of them are considered among the elite every year in college basketball, but definitely an interesting concept.

If this involves giving up some payments for the football game, I doubt we'll do it.  We're broke.

Not if you follow the USU plan; according to the article, the football team got a high six-figure payment for playing at U$C.

I wonder if USC's postseason ban isn't a factor. They have nothing to lose by taking a road game.

The biggest question, in my mind, is if the Aggies will be able to rebuild or if they're on the way down after two superb seasons.

You must have read this wrong the 2 for 1 it suggests doing is an away football game to a big school to get a home and home deal for that same school in basketball, thus no money lost.

The 2-for-1 football deal typically does involve a loss of revenue. Basically, you get the home game in return for not receiving large payouts for the 2 road games. It's why Ohio canceled its home game vs. Virginia Tech. Frank wasn't hip to playing Va Tech 3 times (twice on the road) for no money.

That's the the thing I don't think many understand. We could get big teams to Peden if we paid enough, but is it worth it financially? Can we even begin to consider it based on finances? Of course, I'm sure Virginia Tech would have been more costly than some of the lower-tier BCS schools, but then you have to consider how much people would really care if Rutgers, Louisville or Vanderbilt came to Peden. The draws for UConn and Minnesota and Pittsburgh were large, but were they really that much larger than for any other game?

You guys are missing the point.  It's not about a 2-for-1 for the football team.  The football team would go and play at a big name football school (big pay day), and in return you get a 1-for-1 with the basketball team.  You wouldn't be giving up a payment like we were in that Va Tech deal.  I suppose you would give up a small amount in b-ball, but we would stand to bring in a big crowd to the Convo, so it would probably be negligible depending on who was coming into town.

If we want to play the big boys, it will be on the road. Pitt will not come to the Convo to play. Have you looked at theiir schedule? They rarely play on the road in non-conference and their home schedule is loaded with cupcakes. Playing us at their place is a major upgrade for them. They have the Big East to carry the day for them. Rome wasn't built in a day. If we start playing better OOC teams, even on the road, then play well in the MAC, we'll start to get more respect and then better players. Our current strategy, if there is one, is not built to last.

Ah.  OK I understand now.  This could be cool.  But football is scheduled so far in advance....

I wonder if we could call Rutgers and Penn State and tell them we'll take $50K off our football payout in exchange for a 1 for 1 in hoops.  That would be cool.

So we do this with Villanova.  We go to Philly for one football game and  home and home games with the Widcats for BBALL!  I promise to attend all games -- lets do it!

Yes.  Maybe even radical, and borderline wicked.  Not sure if I can go all the way to wicked on this.

Penn State has been decent maybe twice in the last decade.  Rutgers is awful.  I'd take Robert Morris or Morehead State over either choice, teams we can go 1-for-1 with without any of the rest of the mess.

I don't dislike the idea of 2-for-1 football/basketball deals, but to do it to get Rutgers or PSU into the Convo would be an utter waste, in my eyes.

Kentucky would never do it but would Louisville or Minnesota? Pitino, apparently, has brought a team to the Convo before.

I think he agreed to it but sent Tubby Smith in his place.

To have Villanova at the Convo and and a trip to Philly -- I would believe we should be more than willing to play a top 5 FCS team at Peden or go to Philly.  I would say we should be ecstatic!  Bring on the NOVA Nation!  It actually is a conceivable deal for Villanova, sellable to them because they are on the verge of their decison on whether to convert to FBS.

Plus, Nova would probably be a tougher game than half our conference, easily.

Really, you are advocating sending our football team on the road to play a lesser division team? I don't know what the new divisions are called.  I would love to get big names back in the Convo for hoops, but that is just a terrible idea.
