Looks like they got two big games at West Virginia and a tournament at Utah State(ut-arlington among the 2 other schools in the event. They got other games with Western Carolina, James Madison, Arkansas State. Morehead State, Alcorn State, Cleveland State, UAB, plus a couple D-II schools that won't count toward rpi. They got a home bracketbuster. Looks like Drexel will play them in 2012 instead of this coming year.

Decent schedule with few easy games and plenty of competitive teams. Very much like our schedule last year.  5 or 6 home games for them.  They got CSU and UAB in the MAC center plus a home bracketbuster.

They only lost Sherman from last years team, so they should be the favorite to win the MAC.  MAC rpi should be much improved with several teams returing either stars or significant numbers of the rotation.

Ohio likely will have a similar schedule. Looks like MAC teams are finding some good games.

They refuse to play us, though I don't remember the circumstances behind that. Bob Haldeman can probably provide insight.

WVU could not beat us, so they dropped us. Today they have the Dayton mentality, they will not come to Athens.

Ohio beat them three games in a row a long time ago, during the Larry Hunter years.  That's been so long ago, I can't understand why something that happened under Catlett would impact today's scheduling.

But, I can see why they would take the Dayton attitude.

Ed Pastilong was the WVU AD during that run and he just retired a year or so ago.  WVU was a Final Four team.  They are not going to commit to road games in Athens.  Dayton and WVU both sell a lot of basketball tickets now.  There is no way they are going to pass up that revenue to come to a MAC school.  As much as I loved it for my community, the OU/WVU home-home series will never happen again.  We are lucky to have the Marshall series at this point.

I'm requesting OHIO at WVU.  No mention of a home & home.  Prefer a one & done in Morgantown vs. going to Louisville or Kansas for example.  Then again, it's a biased request living in WV.

Have degrees hanging on the wall from both institutions.  Would be wearing green & white should the game ever be played again.

People keep saying that, but have we even asked them? Dayton just went to Akron a couple years ago. They also went to Toledo, but I think that was because the coaches were friends. Of course, they go to Miami every other year. If they will go to Akron I don't know why they wouldn't come to Athens, although Akron has probably had better records/RPI's the last few years.

I just called Mr. Wabler and offered him a one for one and he declined my offer, maybe Mr. Schaus can give it a try. I am sure in all the years we have approached Dayton.

I'm not sure we've tried all that hard either.  Oxford Tech plays Xavier and Dayton very regularly.  I know they are closer then we are, but I really don't think travel budgets is the key to this issue.  It's probably not having the right people, like Battle Cat, placing the calls.

If the program elevates to national prominence, do the bigs come to Athens because it adds luster to their scheds or do they avoid us for sure because no one wants a roadie against a powerful team which is generally considered unremarkable?

If we rise to national prominence, we're not longer unremarkable. But look at Gonzaga and Butler: They can pull in good teams now. Sometimes it's on a neutral floor, but they're getting the games.

I have my M.O.; clearly I posited a scenario in which we became nationally prominent after a period (now!) in which we were generally considered unremarkable.  I understand that you cannot be nationally prominent and unremarkable at the same time.

Unless you are columbus.

Crazy thing is that they host those teams and draw 4,000 fans tops. You bring Xavier or Dayton to the Convo and I guarantee at least 8,000, even over Winter Break. Get them here with the students and we've got an all-time crowd on our hands.

Miami has that Miami Valley 5 thing where they play Dayton, Xavier, Wright State home and home every year while they play UC on the road. Ohio could do the same in the Ohio Valley by playing Marshall and Duquene home and home with games against WVU and Pitt on the road. At the next level try to get the Cats into some high profile tourneys containing BCS opponents. The final part of the schedule should be buy games at home against lower tier mid major (not not low major) opponents. If that takes an increased basketball budget to support I am all for it.

Kent also has Shawnee State at the MAC Center Jan 2nd. I don't really like Alcorn (SWAC), Morehead (OVC), at Western Carolina (Southern). A program that has won as much as Kent State should be able to do better than games against leagues like that.

Interesting thought, but Xavier and Dayton are far above Marshall and Duquesne at this point. We play Marshall every year, and we used to play Duquesne about every year before TOS. Duquesne is probably the third best team in their own city right now, with Pitt and the rising program at Robert Morris.

The Dukes were sneaky good last year, making a run at the A-10 title before fading late. They should be solid again this upcoming season, too.

And I don't think Dayton would draw much more than a normal crowd.

WVU vs Ohio? Was a result of Larry & Catlett being pals from various Nike coaches outings and sponsored golfing.

Catlett liked the geographically close games in that era, and the games were played very early in their move to the BigEast. They essentially dated schedule wise to the early-90s Atlantic 10 era at WVU, where strength of schedule was not much of a consideration by the HC. You will note WVU had several near misses of at-larges in that era, quite probably as direct results of mediocre scheduling.

Why is there still any bad blood? An assistant AD still on staff there after the Luck transition went through the roof on a couple occasions when we broadcast our hoops games with WVU and he/they felt we had encroached on their home TV markets without paying them fairly for the rights. We believed we obeyed the contracts as written. He is still on staff there but de-emphasized. He did not understand at the time the concept of DMAs. Morgantown is in the Pittsburgh DMA. Under my pals Derek Scott and Paul Ladwig, we ran the games in several adjacent markets in WV/VA/OH, but not in Pittsburgh. Crux of the problem was us "selling" the game in the Clarksburg DMA, whose stations are seen in Morgantown. Blah, blah, blah.......TV inside baseball......blah, blah......frame sync.....blah blah.....Glendive, MT.

WVU played Ohio to 1999. It must have been about straight years that the two schools played. WVU was football only for its first few years in the Big East, not moving over until 1995. Virginia Tech was football only until 1999 playing its basketketball in the A10. I once met somebody who said he had memories of camping out at the baksetball arena for when UMass came to town and this memory prevailed over VT football which was strange. In those days to follow on what you mention above there wasn't as much science into scheduling by the big guys to pad schedules maximizing win totals across the Big East. In recent years it looks like Huggins has taken on a more agressive schedule with strong mid majors and a few BCS teams.

My thoughts were not as much toward the strength of the teams involved but trying to build a consistent regional presence with Marshall, Duquense, Pitt, WVU all in the November-December timeframe. Big East schools, a CUSA, and a A-10. Then shoot for getting the program in at least 1 marquee tourney every season. Create a consistent schedule for the fans to identify with and to sell recruits. The remaining games could be against lower tier MVC, CAA and Horizon teams to get a win. There is a lot of emphasis recently on scheduling teams by previous years RPI but teams from solid mid major conferences are going to be more recognizable by fans.

Correct on all counts.........I went to 4-5 WVU memorable home games in a three year span in the mid-90s........if it was a 'big' game, I was there. The key three were Catlett teams giving back 15-19 point leads to lose to Top 7 or higher ranked UMass (Lou Roe & Camby #1 at the time) in the final A10 year, and then to the Iverson version of GTown and Tim Thomas flavor of Nova the next year. Classically great home environment, muted by incredibly 3rd quartile A10/BigEast talent of the home team.
