I encountered Dante one time when he was a senior in high school and his Greenfield McClain team was playing Upper Sandusky, led by Jon Diebler. McClain won by about 30 and Jackson completely outplayed Diebler. He admitted afterward he was sort of put off by the fact that Diebler was offered by Ohio State and he wasn't. Of course, ultimately, McClain got knocked out of the tournament relatively early and Upper Sandusky came within two minutes of winning the state championship against Dayton Dunbar, which featured Norris Cole.

Honest question here, who had the better college career? Jackson or Diebler?

Dante had some good games, but as a whole, I don't think things every came together for him. He average less than 7.9 points per game as a senior and never shot better than 39 percent in any season. Diebler became a role player, a 3-point specialist, in college, and filled his role about as well as anyone can. He led the nation shooting 50.2 percent on 3s as a senior. He was drafted 51st overall by the Blazers but probably is headed to Europe for at least a year (whether there is an NBA season or not).

Coming 4 years too late. Despite his subpar A-10 career I think he would have really flourished in the MAC (not to mention boost attendance). Greenfield loves basketball.

Dante was in the Convo four years in the districts/regionals and was an important element in one of the largest high school tournament crowds in the Convo.............versus Logan Elm if memory serves.

Timmy O did not recruit him because he thought Dante was destined for a larger program and did not want to waste the effort...Big John wanted to go after him badly, though.

Coach O'Shea knew this guy was a bit role player in a big time want to be program. I applaud Tim for not recuriting him. kuwick was the brains behind that program when it came to recuriting, and if he didn't want Jackson, I am fine with that. Tim brought us guys like Leon, Brdgewater, Freeman, Fears, Gladeny, Tillman, some of the best players to wear a Bobcat Uniform. Not bums like The Twins! Floyd, Kanzig and Martin.

Whether or not O'Shea thought Jackson was destined for bigger and better things is irrelevant IMO. Go after the best players and see if you can land them. Especially guys who grow up in your own backyard and have played in your arena. I never saw Jackson as being an elite talent, but he was certainly a guy who was going to make a difference on a MAC roster. He'll be a solid coach, especially defensively.

Bridgewater?  Gladney?    You're really going to say Bridgewater and Gladney are some of the best players to wear a Bobcat uniform?

Tim also brought us greats such as...  Ottrix, Bota, Jackson, Chatman, Hester, Pearson, Whittington...

Bridgewater?  Really?!

We brought some great crowds with us, but Greenfield McClain was bar none the biggest I've seen follow a basketball team around here.

and just how many of the greenfield fans purchased tix to X games when Jackson played there?  Believe me, this whole thing about recruiting kids from within 50-75 miles of campus because hometown crowds will descend on Athens to see them is wishful thinking.

Didn't see a line of cars heading southeast out of Columbus to see Kellog on game nites... and I didn't read any stories about Upper Sandusky emptying out when Diebler was playing in C-bus.  It happens rarely, if at all.

Actually, I think people from Upper Sandusky attended more Ohio State games the last four years than probably the 25 years before that combined. Everyone made a point if they weren't going to watch every single game on TV. But most of these people were obsessed with Ohio State to begin with. Many of them didn't care that much about basketball before, however. And realistically, Ohio State maybe had an added average attendance of 100 people per game who might not have gone if not for Jon. It is a pretty small amount in the grand scheme of things.

I don't know how often it happened. But I attended Xavier's Senior Night this year and sat in front of about 20 Dante fans (non-relatives) from Greenfield. They told me they wanted to be there for Dante's last game. I could only imagine that these same fans would have attended a few games at the Condo.

FYI - The game was in the middle of the week and the tickets were about $20/each.

I think had he gone to OU, there probably would have been about 30 or so non-relatives per game show up on average just to see him. Had he proven to be a really good MAC player, maybe 50 or more. But yes, your point still holds that recruiting him realistically wouldn't have made a signifgant attendance difference. If there was ever a player of signigance from within 30 minutes of Athens, that might make an impact.

On a related subject, I'm still waiting to see how we recover the 2,000 Athens County relatives and close family friends of Larry Hunter who stopped going to Ohio home games when he was canned.  Take a look at the attendance figures pre- and post-Larry, and you'll see an almost instant drop of 2,000 per game (on average).  I'll admit that this is only a hypothesis; however, I can't think of a good alternate explanation that fits the data as well.

I can.  They're fans of Larry Hunter (nothing wrong with that) but not fans of Ohio University (a lot wrong with that).

The Larry Hunter effect of attendance is over-stated.  If you were to quantify it, I would say easily under 500 and nowhere near 2000.  Attendance was virtually the same Osheas first year, and only a mild dropoff in his 2nd year during an extremely disappointing season near the bottom of the MAC.  The 04 team was awful and lost the star power of Hunter & Esterkamp, and that is when attendance dropped off.
