Bobcat Radio Reaches More in 2011

Aug. 29, 2011

ATHENS, Ohio - A wide reaching radio network can do so much for a program and it's fans.  For 2011 and beyond, the Citizens Bank Ohio IMG Sports Network has expanded to reach more Bobcat fans than before.  Through a unique partnership with WOUB’s network and other commercial radio additions, 15 stations now make up the affiliate family for football and men’s basketball.

WOUB’s stations in Cambridge, Chillicothe, Ironton and Zanesville will break away from their normal National Public Radio schedule to join the full Bobcat broadcast.

"We are thrilled with the opportunity to bring Bobcat football and men's basketball broadcasts to a bigger segment of our region,” WOUB interim director and general manager Tom Hodson said.  “This year we also have added Bobcat Sports Showcase which will highlight all of Ohio University athletics and Relentless, an inside look at Ohio's football training camp. This partnership will allow us to provide the best Bobcat coverage to all of our varied audiences through Southeastern Ohio, western West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky."

Ohio alum and IMG network manager Tony Castricone was instrumental in making this partnership, and the commercial station deals,  happen.

“IMG is working hard to make Ohio athletics accessible on the radio for fans all over central and southern Ohio,” Castricone said.  “The WOUB partnership also means our talented play-by-play team will work directly with the staff and students that make Ohio University one of the best journalism schools in America.”

Athens’ Power 105, WXTQ, once again is the flagship station of the network.  Ohio’s presence in the capital city continues with Columbus’ Fox Sports Radio WYTS.  Mainstay affiliates in Parkersburg, Marietta, McConnelsville and Georgetown are back, and Logan and Middleport return to the network this season.  The positioning of these stations, plus a free online audio stream on OhioBobcats.com, will allow fans even greater access to the broadcasts.

Russ Eisenstein returns for his fourth year as the “Voice of the Bobcats,” and color analyst Rob Cornelius is back for his 15th year on the network.  Ohio Athletics’ commitment to helping student broadcasters gain valuable experience in the business continues with Brian Boesch on the sidelines, and a weekly halftime feature from Grant Burkhardt.

“Our goal is to be the best radio network in the MAC, and one of the best in the country,” Eisenstein said.  “I’m proud of our product.  From the start of the pregame to the final segment of postgame, we hope to inform and entertain all of our listeners.  The expansion of the network shows the commitment Ohio Athletics and IMG have to the broadcast team and the product.”

The partnership with WOUB also solidifies the bond with women’s basketball and baseball.  Both sports will remain on WOUB-AM in 2011-12.

The first broadcast of Bobcat Football on the expanded network comes on September 3 as Ohio opens the season at New Mexico State.  The hour long pregame show begins gamenight coverage at 7pm EDT.

I wish we had a better signal in Columbus. 1230am is a mess when the sun goes down.

Suggestions?

With affiliates in Ironton, Logan, McConnelsville and TWO in Middleport, how can we not be building a Mid-West regional powerhouse?  Maybe next year we can expand into Trimble, The Plains and McArther.

Seriously, I think my DIII high school broadcasts to a larger population base than these stations represent.  Way to go for the gusto and get stations in Cinci, Cle, Dayton, Toledo, Akron, etc.  Y'know where Alumni and potential in state recruits live?

Not trying to be too harsh, but that list of affiliates is very SE Ohio centric and does nothing to raise the visibility of the programs thoughout the state.  Always the redheaded stepchild.

I believe it's been stated that we basically have to buy the time to have a station carry our games.  Since we can't afford the bigger cities, these smaller station agreements are the best we can do.

Tuneradio for your android .....you get the added advantage of getting Dakich from 12 to 3 everyday as part of your preset faves (caution highly addictive) but it gives you a great feed from Athens or anywhere in the world.

I counted 17 stations. If I had to guess what the rest of the MAC schools averaged for affiliates, it would be about 3 or 4 apiece.

Actually downloaded the 1070 Station app on my iPhone, so I can listen to Dakich at work.  May not of cared for him while he was at BG, but he is a great radio guy, and has some very good ideas.

Very tough to get good Sports Radio up her in Youngstown.  And I honestly can't think of station that would be good to carry the Bobcats up here.  Ohio wouldn't come close to competing with either Ohio State or Youngstown State in this area.

The expansion of the network is a step in the right direction.  Good work!

I'm still disappointed that we no longer have an affiliate we can pick up in Jackson, a mere 40 miles from Athens.  I can get 105.5 out of Athens if I turn my radio upside down and stick the antenna against the metal on the bathtub door.  Literally.

We also need to keep in mind that the broadcasts are on the web.

The saturation level of the stations is now more in line with the Marshall network. They look to have the same strategy of buying a lot of small market stations and West Virginia as we know is a small market state anyways. Out of the MAC I read that Toledo is upgrading from 3 to 6 stations this year but they do have agreements in place with stations in Detroit and Cleveland. The approach most BCS programs are using for the radio network is similar to Ohio and Marshall going for saturation over market share. Ohio should try to go after more affiliates in the Central Ohio market and up into OVC territory. I've got the # of stations listed here by network for comparison purposes. Notre Dame has a true national radio network and the SEC schools are saturated statewide. ACC and BE level schools have far fewer affiliates.

The hometeam coverage by the other MAC schools is pitiful - we got it pretty good. I am often on the road when we have away games - and try to catch the Cats on the opposing team radio broadcasts when in their backyard. You can't pick up Toledo just south of BG, can't pick up BG in Findlay, etc., etc. - pitiful.

My best opposing team network memory is vs Miami - when Jerome Tillman tore them up his last game there. I grew up near Oxford - and parents live 12 miles N of Oxford. I have been to 4 OU/Fiami games in Oxford - and we have lost EVERY FRIGGIN' TIME - and teams w/Trent (twice), Leon, and last year. The year Tillman killed 'em - I was in Cincinnati - thought about going - but decided that I was just too much bad luck if I went. So - I listened on the radio - I was a raucus 1 man Ozone all the way down the road listening to the end of the game!

Never tried TuneIn Radio -- I always used FStream for iPod Touch, which required manually inputting the stream url for WXTQ, but worked fine.

Looks like TuneIn is much simpler, and is available on about any device you can imagine.

http://tunein.com/mobile/

Smartphones with 3G and webstreaming mean anybody (even our WBB and baseball teams) can have a national reach.

I've used TuneIn for about a year and it works great.  Seems to take longer to buffer than other apps like IHeartRadio and Pandora, but all in all, pretty good.  It's actually gotten better with the last few releases.  It was pretty rough when I first got it.

I used it to listen to the bracket buster vs. Winthrop last year as I was driving back from Indiana. Outside of needing to re-buffer when I would (seemingly) travel between cell towers, it was 95% solid in a moving vehicle for the entire game.

Two thumbs up for TuneIn Radio from me. Nice to know I can always listen to an Ohio broadcast for free no matter where I am.

I listend to the Marshall game waiting for a flight in the Memphis airport, the Winthrop game driving through the mountains in NC & TN, and one of the BG games driving through the middle of nowhere in the New Mexico desert. Rarely ever had to buffer.

The sound quality is even better than listening on the radio too. Crystal clear.

We could also play Ohio State, Cincinnati, Xavier, Dayton, Wright State, Cleveland State and Youngstown State every year non-conference and get on more stations statewide.
