I've noticed over the years that this is pretty much stock language thrown into press releases in a "quote" from a coach after a player leaves the program and transfers somewhere else.  Just saw it again this week with Nate Rucker leaving NIU and Coach Mark Montgomery had the typical quotes in a press release.

BUT...what do you think these words really mean?  Would love to hear some of your translations from spin to reality.

It's fancy talk for the homespun advice my mamma said: If you reckon you ain't got nuttin' nice say, then you best be fixin' to say nuttin'...

Since you have to say sumptin' you say sumptin' all nice like. But this is just nice talk to makes sumptin' outta nuttin', and vice versa... I think the Germans call it der einzerfeizen...

They really should go all Suthern' like and add, "bless his heart"...

I don't endorse the furry lifestyle, but when the Bobkitten is involved things can change mighty quickly...

In many cases it means exactly what they say. Sometimes things just don't work out and the young person moves on, Coaches understand that and wish the kid well.

I agree with you Battle Cat; many times they mean what they say.  But you know there's gotta be times that they don't mean it.  It just amuses me that this same language is used over and over again in these press releases, etc.  Sort of like people saying, "I'm quitting to spend more time with my family."  Sometimes they mean it, but certainly not always.

I guess I also believe that it means what it means but usually left unsaid is the last half of the statement...
" and don't let the door hit you in the #ss on the way out".

It's easier to be gratuitous when you know you don't have to interact with them ever again.

It's basically the most politically correct way to bode someone off without coming off as negative.

I've worked in Human Resource departments, and I've had to write quite a few of those sentences when one of our employees leaves or gets fired and their clients need to be told that they no longer work with us.

And just from my perspective, half of the time when we write that sentence, we don't actually mean it 100%...

It's real if they say something like "we'll miss you."   If not, screen door.

Me too. It's all about liability.

Ahem....it happens yet again.  Mt. Pleasant Sun, 08/19/11:

Nate VanArendonk, a 6-foot-10 redshirt freshman center, has decided to leave the Central Michigan men’s basketball team.

VanArendonk will transfer to Hope College.

His departure from the team was confirmed by head coach, Ernie Zeigler.

“Nate has decided to leave the program and be closer to his family,” Zeigler said. “We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”

Add NIU's Henley to the list:

Northern Illinois announced Thursday night that freshman Andre Henley has left the men’s basketball program and has withdrawn from the university, citing personal reasons.

“I want to thank coach [Mark] Montgomery and the staff at NIU for the opportunity they gave me,” Henley said in a news release. “There are matters in my personal life that I need to focus on before turning my attention to being a college basketball player.”

In a news release, Montgomery wished Henley “well in his future endeavors.”

Juwan Howard, Jr.  But at least give Coach Hawkins credit for saying something different:

"I stand behind Juwan’s decision 100 percent and this is a private matter and it is not basketball related," Hawkins said.

Maybe b/c Mike Mitchell didn't leave the basketball program. Joe Mitchell, however, did leave the program.
