At the Mercyhurst scrimmage, I was in the Ozone and was shocked at the seating in front of us.  I just don't see how this will turn out well.  It's not anything against rewarding donors for their gifts to the university; with out them, an athletic program would be very difficult to run.

But you're sitting people in front of the loudest, rowdiest student section that's known across the conference (and outside it) for being brutal against opposing players.  How is this a good decision?

I apologize if this has already been talked about, but I think this will take away from the atmosphere in the Convo.  Hopefully I'm wrong.

It is not a good decision.  At all.  Hopefully it won't last more than 1 year.  Other schools would kill to have a student section like ours.  And, the athletic department messes with it?  Bizarre.

Can somebody hit a pull up jumper for me?.....

It will last as long as we sell the seats, and apparently we've met with success. I'm sure the folks who bought those seats knew what they were getting in to.

I was mixed between furious and bewildered.  There were even young children sitting in front of us; not that I have a problem with it, but some point every game, a parent will turn around and ask that we use politer language.  It didn't happen against MC (we were on good behavior), but I can see this turning into a huge fiasco later causing a rift between donors and students (who attend games).

If someone asks you to tone down your language....DO NOT.

That's not their role.

The little kids made me cringe.  Kids love the O Zone, and I honestly bet they will be into the game as much as the students...  But the parents won't love the language that you don't hear from the far side of the court...  If you think I'm going to start toning it down, you're crazy.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Apparently you can't hear the talk from the coaches or between players on the bench, in time out huddles - or on court during play. Not just in the Convo - anywhere. Get used to it - or don't expose yourself to the reality if you can't handle it........

I knew all along this was gonna be nothing but a problem........

I bought the seats and those were my kids in front of you Monday night, along with my wife and one of my biggest clients.  The seats were offered for sale to me (and others) because I open up my checkbook at a certain level to support our athletic programs and our school with unwavering loyalty.  I have been coming to games in the Convo since I was 14, so I know what I'm getting into.  I would also bet that my boys have been to twice as many Ohio games as any other student in that section.  They know what is going on.  Heck, they are the Ozone in December.   I also bought 4 other seats higher up in case I want to give my courtside seats to a friend or client and sit up there with my family.

I am not likely to say anything about the behavior of the Ozone because generally the students control themselves.  I would, however, look at the students at Penn State right now as an example of how to control yourselves.  Be loud, be relentless, be intense.  Do not cross the line to classless.  I am asking you to reconsider your belief that you have a right to be crude just because you are in a student section seat.  Each of us individually makes up the university as a whole.  Students, alumni, boosters, athletes, coaches and administrators are all pieces of this great environment.

I bought the last pair available because I thought it was a great concept, wanted them all to sell out, wanted to support the program and because I won't be able to attend a single game in person decided it would be a nice gesture to donate them to Big Brothers/Big Sisters for use by disadvantaged kids and their mentors.

As students we pay a great deal of money supporting the team as well, and we dont get to choose if we donate or not the school takes it. So if we want to be in the ozone and have a great time then we should be able to. Also the school should not do anything to tone down our home field advantage, which they have done with these seats....my two cents.

Tell that the players and the coaches. The OZone is the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in comparison.

It's D-I basketball. You're going to hear far worse if you sit a nine year old kid behind the bench than they would if they sit in front of the OZone.

Creativity?

How does this tone down the OZone or take away the home field advantage?  Your seats are in the exact same spot.  You will not find a more passionate, loud, informed fan than me.  I'm just suggesting that screaming obscenities is not classy.  I love the chants that are clever and intimidating.  I laughed hysterically a few years ago when my, then 6 year old boy did the Winning Team, Losing Team chant to the team he had just beat in a youth basketball game.  The Ohio traditions are part of the fiber of our family.

For the record, I have posted this statement the past two years when I had different seats.  I'm not that old or out-of-touch.  I still own my 6th Man t-shirts from 1991-1995.  (they don't fit as well, but I still have them)  I was in your seats providing the exact same support for my four years as a student.

I was excited to have these seats.  The Bobcat Black seats did not take one single seat away from the OZone.   I never expected this kind of response.  I'd look at it differently if I were a student.  You never know who is sitting in those seats.  I interview and hire graduates of Ohio.  I would guess the other 32 seats are similar.  I look at Ohio students as a cut above the rest.  I love the passion and support of our student section and would not trade it for anything.  We are all on the same page.

I feel students will be timid if they see kids or older people in front of them. They wont act like they usually would anyway.

To use profanity effectively and creatively is a linguistic art form and there is no better atmosphere than a college basketball student section!!!!!

Hah!! Just kidding......kind of. To use nothing but string after string of cursewords is rather dull and unappealing, but to mix one in here and there while berrating an opposing player because of their grades or other personal shortcomings, to me, is not only a student section members right but also responsibility....

Its one of the reasons the internet was invented...to research the opposing players Bio!

695 and D.A. have great counterpoints (I do think you have a good idea donating floor seats).  My only counter to the home court advantage is that there was a difference between players imbounding a ball with nothing between them and the Ozone but the cheerleaders and having a bench and chairs all the way around that side of the court between them and the student section.  It was much easier to make our taunts personal because we were right behind them; it seems like we're farther from the action (even though we aren't.)

Now, if those of you donate jump in on the action of being loud, then I will stand corrected and this is not an issue.  I could very well be wrong about this; we'll just have to see.

In talking to the BB/BS folks, most of the mentors are students, hence the kids will get great mentoring on how to Stand Up and Cheer.  But them the Zoners might complain that people are Standing Up and blocking their view, which will in turn result in another thread complaining about the seats.

Speaking of standing up, and taking this thread in a slightly different direciton - did the PA announcer request Bobcat fans to stand up until the first score by the opposition during the Mercyhurst game?

The end to this silly forced "tradition" can't come soon enough.
