Northern Iowa should be higher than 21 but in looking at that list there are only a handful of teams I would move down.  There are a lot of really, really good mids this year.

The Atlantic 10 is not included in the poll.

But Xavier's a mid-major. Ask their fans.

I think he means that the A-10 is a major conference for the purposes of the mid-major poll...is that right?

That is right. Little St. Bonaventure and Duquesne are out of our league in men's basketball.   That definition they are using of a mid major conference is pre BCS era. The WAC, MWC, A10, CUSA should be included in the Mid Major group. BYU the historically dominant school of the MWC is now showing up in the this poll because they've moved basketball to the WCC proves this classification makes no sense. Welcome San Diego State to the mid major world next year by joining the Big East in football and placing basketball in the Big West?

Wes, I completely disagree with you on this.  I think the poll as set up fits with the traditional understanding of "mid major" in college basketball.

Also, note that CUSA is not included.  So according to this poll, CUSA, including Marshall, is high major.

I agree with it.

I find this thing quite insulting.  Mid-major = inferior to the rest of D1.

Without looking at the poll (which I only have one time many years ago as I find it demeaning and irrational when Butler and GOnzaga are included) the actuality is the LOW majors are inferior. The A suns, MEAC's and what conference is Vermont froms are considered by AAU and HS coaches and recruits to be low majors and "at least it is a D1 ride".

Interesting the JSF feels Oakland will  dominate their conference again.....that is how Xavier, Gonzaga and Butler distanced themselves from their respective conferences. Domination.  With a sprinkling of games and wins with Big time opponenets at Nuetral or Home and HOme sites. We talked of Temple being "A-10 " last year but they are living off past glory more than constant achievement. SLU with Majerus is making A 10 noise this year while Dayton continues a string of losses at X that dates back to the Carter administration. We SHOULD be looking at being the Butler/X/ and now Oakland of the MAC.

My big prblem withthe whole system is the idjut announcers who talk about BCS designation when they are calling basketball games. Sorry it does not walk over from Football. Traditional football powers do not translate to being hoops powers......unless you are talking about the scads of money their AD's tend to throw at basketball.....

I have said this same thing many times, but I never said it better or more succinctly.  GREAT POST!

This is a little off-topic - How are the schools selected to play in the ESPN/Sears BracketBuster games?  It appears that they choose those teams from a similar criteria.

The bracketbuster games provide seldom seen teams a national stage - which is good.  Unfortunately, I believe they serve more to eliminate "mid-majors" rather than promote them.

I agree.   I think they should set up a bracket buster for .500 teams from the money conferences.

Conferences sign contracts to be a part of the event.  In late January or early February, they use a number of factors (RPI being a major component) to pair teams off, and televise about a dozen of the more highly-rated contests.

From what I can tell just being around that campus for the past 2-3 years, no one thinks they are a mid-major. In fact, they'll have words with anyone who thinks so. The term mid-major has gotten relatively skewed over the past 5 years or so with the rise of Xavier, Butler, Gonzaga, and others. How do you define mid-major exactly?

The big boys would never agree to that though.

It would be interesting to see how mids who received at large bids were helped in the Bracketbuster or how teams that were on the bubble were hurt by it.   Maybe if I have a slow day at work next week I'll do a little research.

Either way, it's one of my favorite weekends of the year no matter how much it helps or hurts.  There are a ton of really good games that weekend.

And the sarcasm goes WHOOSH!

And didn't hurt the Shockers too much, either.

There is only one Top 25 Poll I care about and it doesn't have Mid-Major in front of it.

While this isn't the one you mean, it should bring some joy: It's the CBSsports.com RPI. Enjoy!
