I hope the marketing department is planning his jersey retirement ceremony as we speak.

Very good news to hear!  I hope his jersey is in the rafters this season!  I was happy to see this tweet.

I assume that the delay in releasing the schedule is that they were waiting on this news so that they could decide which game to have Gary Trent's number retirement ceremony.  I would like to suggest the Bowling Green game.

I am not convinced this will happen, but it needs to.

Congrats Gary, I know all your former teammates are happy for you.

BG game would be awesome.  They should show all 46 points he dropped on them his junior year before the ceremony.  Regardless when this occurs, I will be there.  GTrent was a huge part of my college years and is one of the main reasons I am a bobcat fan to this day.  Congrats to Mr. Trent.

Maybe a stupid question, but did he graduate from Ohio? I know about 3 or 4 years ago Troop reported he was back to try to get a degree. I think he also expressed some interest in coaching. Then, came the legal problems and I never heard anything more.

If they have his jersey retirement ceremony this year or next, there should be no reason that game doesn't sell out. Hell, even fans of other schools loved Gary Trent when he played at Ohio. I know that's just me being way more than optimistic, but that's how it should be for something that special.

No he did not finish at Ohio University.

Thanks. Obviously, the important thing is that he finished.

Clearly, the fact that it's not an Ohio degree is the toehold that anyone who does not wish to see that number go up has left.

Would it be crass of me to think they wait a little longer, like until the class of '95 has a little more expendable income to place a fundraising effort around the jersey retirement?

Mo Banton graduated from Akron, so that argument will hold no water with me.

If they have a Trent jersey retirement ceremony at the Convo, I'll be obliged to go to it. Even though it would be a haul, I know I'd have to go out of respect.

Trent put Ohio U. on the map when I was there. He made it feel "big time" to be a student at Ohio University. It felt like the eyes of the nation were on the Convo when he played. Maybe a bit of an exaggeration, but most things feel exaggerated when you're 18-19 years old...

Personally for me, it's like when the Mets celebrated their 1986 World Series team. Even being 800 miles away I knew that out of respect I had to attend the on-field reunion at glorious Shea Stadium. Out of respect...

And when they have the reunion of the Ohio U. team that beat Georgetown, I'll need to go to that too. Out of respect...

Out of respect. It's like carrying Mrs. Hill's groceries home...

Congrats to Gary!

I'm in the class of 1995.  Do I just send my check made payable to you Pete and you can start the efforts?

I am however a little bothered by a game 2-3 years ago in the Convo.  At halftime, Gary was doing a radio interview with Russ and Rob.  When he got done he walked past my wife and I on the concourse walkway.  He kind of recognized me and said hello, but then saw my wife and said, "Hey, how you been?".  We have dated steady since we were 16.  She says it was mistaken identity and loves to bring up that conversation occasionaly.  With that in mind, maybe the jersey donation fund should be made by my wife, also Class of 1995.

I'm not saying I agree with it, but I suspect Mr. Trent's well-publicized problems with the law (following OU) will not facilitate his rapid entry into our hallowed shrine.

Well, I'm glad that he graduated.  I think, however, it'll be a few more years before he'll have that jersey retired.  Time may heal the remaining wounds . . . but it might take another decade.

If Gary Trent isn't in the Hall of Fame this coming season and his jersey isn't up in the rafters this coming season then that place isn't fit to have either a Hall of Fame OR rafters. Period. Some people need to get off of their high horses and right that wrong. No excuses anymore.

I think you're going to be disappointed.  Domestic abuse charges trump POY awards.

http://www.slamonline.com/online/the-magazine/features/2011/01/wheres-the-beef/

Trent is working toward getting the degree that he didn’t get from Ohio. “ACC and Big Ten schools, they’re used to players leaving early,” Trent says. “Nobody’s ever done that in the MAC, so I don’t think Ohio University was prepared for that type of situation. I wish my degree could say ‘Ohio University,’ but the odds are looking real slim.”

As it turns out, Trent can never belong to the Ohio Hall of Fame because his diploma won’t be from OU-online classes are what Trent needs, and the school doesn’t offer a full program. As a husband, father of two and coach of his son’s AAU team, Trent can’t uproot and move to southeastern Ohio.

During the ’07 season, Ohio, under former Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt, established eight criteria to have one’s jersey honored by the school. Trent immediately meets seven; his one transgression in the eyes of the school is that he did not graduate.

“Our understanding is Gary Trent has not received his bachelor’s degree. His candidacy would be off the table until that would occur,” Associate Athletic Director for External Operations Dan Hauser says. “We understand… how people leave college and aspire to those dreams and want to go ahead and start their professional career. We wanted to create a system that allowed student athletes to do that but didn’t totally limit their capability to graduate and be honored.”

The rule is that the athlete has to have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.  It does not matter if it is from Ohio.  Isn't the Hauser quote from earlier this year?  If Gary has completed the degree in the meantime, then he should be eligible now.   Here is the HOF link with eligibility requirements:
