Anyone want to take a stab at it? I'm curious to see how many recent guys (Trent to now) would make the list.

Base it off of strictly accomplishments in college. Also, compare them only to their era. Baumholtz would obviously be 1 of the 15 players, but his level of play wouldn't get him off the bench in games these days (speed/size/skill level all has gone up).

I'm not old enough to have seen guys like Devereaux, Luckett, Skaggs play so I'm going to be pretty awful at this. So instead of actually answering your question I'll just mention some guys that I'd definitely consider from the past 10 years. While leaving someone who knows the history better than me to decide if Lewis Geter was better than Tim Joyce.

  • Brandon Hunter is a no-brainer pick for me. A solid scorer and tenacious rebounder, even though Trent gets the starter minutes at the 4, I'd be finding a way to get Hunter into the lineup.

  • I'd definitely want Flomo. Dude was a complete difference maker on defense, and IMO one of the most exciting Bobcats to watch over the past decade.

  • I'd probably try to find space for Sonny Troutman on the team. A lock down wing defender and excellent passer, who's solid enough to handle the ball some when the other team pressures the inbounds.

  • DJ Cooper would definitely be on there. Another very good defender and a great passer. He's the best PG I've seen in the Green and White.

  • I'd consider bringing in Mychal Green or Steve Esterkamp, but probably not both. I like the idea of having a potential volume scorer who's solid from 3-pt range, who can play decent defense.

  • Leon Williams is an interesting case. I've already said that Hunter is a no-brainer, Trent is even more obvious than that. Is there room for Leon? If so that means Tillman is a flat "no" right?

  • And what about Tillman? Probably not quick enough to defend the 3, so probably needs PF minutes. I just don't see that happening with the cast of characters who we've already discussed.

Here's 14, I cannot remember the name of the athlete that played with Deveraux, Alexander and Tatum; he could guard the 2-5 and not give up much and rebound--a Dennis Rodman type guy--he'd be my 15th.

Oldest first:
Don Hilt
Ken Kowal
Bill Brown
Walter Luckett
Steve Skaggs
John Deveraux
Dave Jamerson
Geno Ford
Gary Trent
Stonebrook
Leon Williams
Jeremy Fears

I go back to the early 70s, and so need help figuring out Don Hilt, Bunk Adams, Jerry Jackson and the other 50s and 60s players, but here is my best 13.  Having seen most of them play, if this team had suited up together they would have won the NCAA championship handily.

C         John Devereaux          6'9
PF        Gary Trent                   6'8
SF        Don Hilt                      6'6
SG       Walter Luckett            6'4
P          Snoopy Graham          6'6

C         Craig Love                  6'10
PF        Brandon Hunter          6'7
SF        Bunk Adams               6'5
SG       David Jamerson          6'5
P          Frank Baumholtz        5'11

Reserves
Shaun Stonerook
Howard Joliff
Greg McDivitt

Luckett and Jamerson are toss ups at SG, and the most debatable is Snoopy at point -- usually Dink Whitaker played the point, but when Snoopy ran the point, with Jamerson on the wing, it was mismatch city and impossible to stop.  In coming up with this list it seemed like Ohio has had great big men through the years but it is tough to come up with a list of point guards.

That's correct.

I put my list together in my head in about a minute and Snoop didn't pop in but was an oversight as I'm sure two or three others would bump someone.

Sonny Troutman
Mychal Green
Armon Basset
Jeff Halbert
Jaivon Harris

Brandon Hunter
Patrick Flomo

As someone who is too young to have seen him play, I find it interesting that Snoopy Graham has been listed at PG, SG, and SF in this thread.

He was Ohio's version of Magic Johnson - could play almost any position.

From the late 60's early 70's I always liked 6'2" shooter John Canine and 6'10" post man Craig Love.

It's much easier to compare baseball players than it is college basketball players. What do you think Frankie Baumholtz' strengths were compared to Lewis Geter?

Plus there is ample information about MLB players...I've read 2 biographies on Lou Gehrig alone.  All I know about Dink Whitaker is what OCF tells me.

Best starting five I've seen yet. I would add Vic Alexander and Lew Geter to the bench.

I love that top 5.  BTW, Wes was disrespecting Eddie Hicks in the chat room during the Portland game.  I felt like going all Yancy Gates on him.

I prefer Vic Alexander over John Rhodes.  (I saw Rhodes shoot two consecutive airballs from the free throw line. Vic was an animal.)

The early Curtis Simmons belongs on the list of bench players.  Flomo and Geter should not be on the team, IMO.
Flomo's inability to report to his Judiciary hearing (and resulting expulsion) is a disqualifier.  Jeter was a good player on a bad team...nothing more.

Take anyone who was first team all MAC and you can start from there. George Green was not listed above. Saying who is the best 15 is not the same as putting together a team to play, as some of the guys mentioned would be very good role players on a real team, but were not the best. Ken Kowall was the MAC MVP in 1971 for anyone that doesn't know that.

I looked up all the first team All MAC selections through 2006 and we had 23. Here are the MULTIPLE first team All MAC selections:

Glen Hursey 1951- 1952
Bunk Adams 1960-1961
Don Hilt  1964-1965
Craig Love 1970-1971
Walter Luckett 1974-1975
Tim Joyce 1978-1979
John Devereaux 1983-1984
Snoopy Graham 1988-1989
Lewis Jeter 1991-1992
Gary Trent 1993-1994-1995
Brandon Hunter 2001-2002-2003
