Could the Ohio vs Miami game on January 21 be a sellout?  I could be wrong, but I think it will not just be close, but indeed sell out.  Here is why:
  • The Miami game typically nets 10,000 anyway even when the team is in the midst of a mediocre season (we drew 9,800 on a Sunday last year and 7k+ on weeknights the previous 2 years)
  • It is Dad's weekend, which boosts attendance significantly every year.  The Buffalo game on Dads weekend last year netted atteandance of over 10,000 as the team was 1-4 in the MAC.
  • 2,000 tickets being sold at $1...3,000 more at a discounted price.  Make no mistake about it, these ultra cheap specials boost attendance.
  • This team is good, and even with a few losses between now and then (UNI, Akron, Kent, etc)...the team will most liekly be 14-4 or better at this time.
  • Ohio's beloved son...Gary Trent, the man that lured so many to become devote Bobcat fans and who has had significant support and campaigning for him to be honored for years...Will be honored, and to a great extent, on this day.  I have a friend who is a typical Bobcat Alum buckeye fan...Everytime I talk about the Bobcats, she revels in the glory days of her watching Gary Trent, but never cares to return to the Convo.  She already has it on her calendar to bring her family of 5 down on this day for her first visit in 15+ years.
  • Before you say "Yeah Andy, but people will stay home and watch the NFL playoffs" I say to you Nay...They now have both conference championships on Sunday.  Not a single football game will be played this day.
  • "Yeah but people will watch the Buckeyes instead because they are oh so good this year."  Nay...They play at 8:00, on the road at Nebraska.
Conditional guarentee that if the Bobcats keep playing at least solid and don't have any horrible losses, AND there is not significant snowfall...We will see a sell out with ease.  Get your tickets now!

I agree that the only question is weather. Unfortunately it's a big question. I'm coming down from Cleveland with my Bucknut brother, who I'm slowly converting. I've already prepaid for my Athens hotel, which literally cost more per night than the Bellagio (ouch!). I bought the mini season ticket pack just to get good seats to this game. I have no intention of missing it.

Just imagine if we keep winning and Kent keeps winning...  Kent @ Ohio the Wednesday before the Miami game. That could set up for the best week of Bobcat Basketball I've seen since I really started following this team.

I've seen crazier things happen.

My brother and I will probably be coming down from Wisconsin for the Kent game and Miami game. Could be a massive week for Ohio basketball.

Born in Badger land, raised a Bobcat fan. Wouldn't want it any other way.

MAC basketball would have great attendance like this if schools were winning. That is why attendance numbers are so much better in the Valley. There is so much more at stake in every conference game.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086

Totally agree with you on this.  Big raking over the coals happens on EVERY event weekend.

If you owned the hotel, wouldn't you do it? It makes up for the times when no one is staying at the hotel. I guess you had an 8am econ class you were snoozing through.

That's fine. And when I visit Athens during the summer and non-event weekends, I choose to stay in Columbus.

Their 80 dollar mark-up costs them about $300 of my business a year.

If I can stay at the Westin in C-Bus for the same price as a Holiday Inn in Athens, I'll make the drive and smart economic decision while picking up some Starwood points.

And Athens will love when they abandon their crappily built 20 year facilities molting on State.

Their daily price is 110 bucks when there is nothing going on. Best you are gonna get is 89 if you know the staff and pay them compliments each time you stay ANNNNDDD show them your HOnors card.

And as if on Cue....from my post above.....the economics lecture starts.

I travel from coast to coast...Iit seems as if one of .the only places I can t get folks to come off the  price in a less than half full hotel is Athens. It is an anomaly that does not exist anywhere else I have been. Usually I can get a room down to at least half price on an off night whether it is in Scottsbluff or down town Pittsburgh. Not sure if the fact that they have the only game in town during high capacity weekends entitles them to automatically fleece the public. In my case I found alternatives by not staying over and finding places further away. The ill will generated did me in.

We have had fulll on lectures here in BA about elasticilty and demand and macro and micro economics. I understand and I understand as the parent of an athlere that when folk who are parents of recruits ask about Athens I ALWAYS warn them about the hotel situation.

Wow, you're right. That's crazy. You can usually find good prices on the Web... but not in Athens.

That wont happen.....They will turn them into the Highlander or a Knights Inn like on the other end of State with Punjab remarking  "OH Meester Freeaaman we do not have a the very good rate so much on this day as it is a special weekend, your 41 dollar room will be one hundred nineteen tonite tankyouveddymuch" .

In a wonderful article on Motorcycling Southeast OHIO's roads they are very up on Burr Oak and use it as their base of operations and imply that it is very motorcycle friendly for touring cycles and folks who really want to see the area. A boon for tournism and the economy but I can't see it being very alluring or having legs with growth potential with the pricing structure. Good for me because it will stay the way it is instead of becoming the Ohio version of Deal's Gap and I can ride unfettered through the twisties of the Hocking Hills and surrounding areas.

I really enjoyed the weekends we spent at lake Hope cabins. For the price they are just phenomenal. Just very hard to get there after a night on Court Street as many of you that I have seen out already know. THe cab just does not head clear on out there.

One of the best lines I have ever seen about bicycling or motorcycling backroads is in this article

After two full days in southeastern Ohio, I concluded that back roads here are like guns, knives and electricity: approach them with respect or you may quickly be in over your head.

....I would only add that the folks who inhabit those roads be treated withthe same respect

If any of you guys are driving from the east (Virginia, Pennsylvania, W. Virginia, ect.) I would highly suggest staying at a hotel in Parkersburg.  There have been several times when i came down for visits that Athens hotels were either sold out or the price was marked up ridiculously.  The extra 45 minute drive is a bit annoying, but if you're looking to save a few bucks, i would suggest looking into that.

I haven't stayed in Athens for some time. The last time we stayed in Parkersburg. Please tell me  how much the rooms typically are during a big weekend. It seems to me that if people were not staying there, as many of you say you will not, then over time they would have to lower their price or stay empty.

One thing to consider during basketball season is that there are three event weekends that coincide with Saturday home basketball games.

Believe me, those rooms won't be empty that weekend.  Dad's weekend probably trailed Homecoming and Graduation in Athens, but that is about it.

As the gouging victim, I always wince and take it, or choose another weekend. I can fully understand borna's anger, particularly since he was a frequent visitor in recent years. I can also understand people staying an hour or so away. Coming from four hours away, that's not really an appealing option to me, as a big part of the allure of visiting Athens is actually visiting Athens. That means more than a game and a quick meal to me.

Room rate gouging's annoying, but it happens on some level everywhere. It does get heavily magnafied by special events in Athens because there are so few rooms and even fewer decent rooms. I wish it was different, but I honestly don't think it has much impact on demand. For the record, I had to call around to find a room for Dad's weekend, and ended up securing the very last one at the Hampton.

Everybody wants a good deal and the "priceline mentality" is alive and well. It can and does work, but not all the time, as in this case. You know, this is America. Somebody who thinks there is demand for hotel rooms in Athens can build a hotel.

Would local politics (building codes, etc) allow for pretty ready building of more rooms?

You would have to have your own money, because I can not see a financial institution making a loan to build or add to any hotel in that area right now.  If you had enough cash on hand to do that, chances are that you have enough pull in the area to help with the local building codes, etc.

My couches are sold out for this weekend.  Current rates for my front porch are $300/person.  Bring your own sleeping bag.  Restroom's out back.

I've seen crazier things happen.
