In lurking on the UNI fan board, it felt like I was reading BobcatAttack. It featured:

  • Dedicated fans who recognize the quality of their program a seemingly everyone ignores the team.

  • Complaints about attendance.

  • Infatuations with various polls and rankings.

  • Obsessions with mentions by national publications and prognosticators.

  • Disgust with regional BCS-obsessed fans and journalists.

I swear, change some names and URLs, and you could trade some posts between our respective sites verbatim. Life is hard as a "mid-major" fan (including having to use the reductive and unfair mid-major term), but it does make the victories sweeter. Best of luck to the Panthers after tonight.

They even mentioned selling alcohol at games to get more fans.

Also found this interesting:
In 2010-2011, of all the programs residing in MSA’s of less than 300,000 with attendance averages better than UNI, only 5 reside in non-BCS conferences. Those being Utah St. – 8,732; New Mexico St. – 5,860; ISUb – 5,602; Ohio – 5,599; and Colorado St. – 4,879. (UNI - 4,676).

Hopefully all these wins push our average up around 7 or even 8,000 once it is all said and done after MAC play.  We've got some big Saturday games that make it possible..

I've seen crazier things happen.

That is interesting Optimist.  I made the statement awhile back that you couldn't name a program in a "mid major" conference that does NOT reside in a big city with better fan support than us.  The discussion that ensued included Utah State as being a possible challenger...But the Logan, UT area is much more populated than the Athens area.

Logan has over 125K. Las Cruces has 97K. Loveland has 67K but is also only 40 miles outside Denver. Not sure what ISUb is.

An NAIA school? I don't think so.

EDIT: It's Indiana State. Don't know what the B is for, but their attendance matches

Oh and to compare to the other cities, Terre Haute has a population of 60k and 168k in the MSA

Looking at the chart one might conjecture that ISUa would be Iowa State
