No talk about OHIO yet on their fan forum. Doubt if will happen, but maybe we can catch them a bit off guard. Not much time for the travel and to prepare for this big game - but love the momentum going into it!

OHIO could have some votes in the media polls next Monday going into this game making it a contest between two top 40 teams. A win of course would be great but just to look strong here on the road also is acceptable.

Haven't seen them play, but just based on the stats they appear to be a very balanced scoring team with excellent guard play.  Kind of sounds like us.  Hope we can bring the energy on the road like we've done most of the year so far.

Interesting that they play DIII Loras (from Dubuque IA) the night before us. And, Loras does not look good even in DIII. One Panther Nation poster noted that they were glad they had this "warm-up" game before OHIO.

I'm surprised:  Not much chirping here about yesterday's game.  Much more about football.

I thought that the hoops win was very fine and viewed by many and would get a lot of commentary here.

We are good.  The game against Northern Iowa has got to be on TV.  Should be a heckuva constest.

The Panthers are a very good team. We must bring our "A" game if we want to win. UNI is 32-5 at home the last three seasons, so they know how to defend their castle.

Let's break this down.

Overview: Statsheet has Northern Iowa third in the RPI against the 21st-toughest schedule. Basketball State also places UNI third in the RPI but 16 in SOS. For Ohio's sake, Statsheet has the Bobcats 18th in the RPI against the 121st-toughest schedule while BB State has us 17th in RPI against a SOS ranked 90th. Both teams are 9-1, though we can assume the Panthers will be 10-1 by gametime. They're not particularly tall; their tallest listed player who plays more than a handful of minutes is 6'9".

Pace: Ohio plays faster. UNI wants to slow things down (64.2 possessions/40, 303rd nationally- man, and things will get more deliberate come conference play). Ohio likes to run when possible (70.6 pos/40, 95th nationally). This isn't to say OU can't play a slower game; they can. But they don't want to play on UNI's terms if they can help it.

Offense: Ohio's recent offensive play has nudged their offensive points per possession above the 1 point line. They're now at 1.011, 118th nationally and an improvement from where they started. Northern Iowa, on the other hand, is excellent offensively. They're 52nd in the country with 1.065 O-PPP. They outshine us in most offensive categories, though we have a superior floor percentage (how often a team scores at least one point in an offensive possession), 41.1% to 39.9%. The teams are very similar in overall FG%: OU 45%, NIU 45.5%, but this is misleading. Northern Iowa is a vastly superior three-point team, draining 40.6% of their attempts from deep. It makes our above-average 35.7% seem pedestrian. What makes that high percentage all the more remarkable is that they take a lot of threes. Six Panthers have at least 20 three-point attempts and four have at least 30. Because their offensive is built around three three-point arc, free throws aren't a factor, right? Wrong. UNI sports a 40.1 free throw rate and shoot 74.9% from the charity stripe. They also do a very good job of holding onto the ball, as do we. They hold the edge here, too: 18.2% to 19.7%. Curiously, though, UNI sports a assist/turnover ratio of less than 1.
The defense is going to want to pay special attention to Chip Rank and Jake Koch. Both are forwards that hit threes at better than 40%. Koch needs to be the focal point. The 6'9" junior is hitting 42.9% of his bombs, grabbing almost five boards a game, dishing 3.1 assists a game. He also gets to the line. He's shooting four free throws a game and making 90% of those attempts. Needless to say, he's a handful. Point Anthony James only gets about two assists per game, but he's shooting 46.9% from three himself. Curiously, though, he's much worse inside the arc.

Defense: Two very good defensive teams clashing. Ohio holds the advantage here. The Bobcats are surrendering just .887 defensive points per possession, 52nd in the country. UNI is 66th nationally at .902 D-PPP. Both are also  very good at forcing turnovers and again, Ohio is better: OU's opponent turnover rate is 26% (7th nationally), UNI's 23% (44th). More good news for Bobcat Nation is that Groce's guys are simply excellent at defending the three; Ohio is only allowing opponents to shoot 24.7% from superhoop land (8th nationally). The Panthers are no slouches themselves, allowing just 31% of opponent threes to go down (88th). The big weakness in the Bobcat armor is fouling. Ohio fouls 21.3 times a game (311th nationally). UNI fouls 17.2 times a game (92nd).

Rebounding: Ohio attacks the offensive glass with gusto, recovering 36.3% of their misses. Northern Iowa doesn't ignore the chance for second chance points, but they're not as good at it (24.3%). They do hold the edge in defensive rebounding, though: 71.7% to 67.6%.

Hey guys, UNI fan here (coming in peace)

Just wanted to invite you to Panthernation.com if you wanted to talk basketball with some of us.   One of the reasons you havent seen any posts on Ohio is because traditionally, we don't make threads until they are "up next".  You will see an "Up Next: Ohio" thread at about 9 or 10 pm.

Regardless, it should be a great game between us.  Best of luck to you on Tuesday!

Go Panthers!

Welcome!  As a general mid-major fan in games of no other natural interest, I'm a pretty decent Panther fan when I see them playing.  Lot of respect for your program, and I was thrilled when I saw this game pop onto our schedule late in the going this season.  I see a lot of our program in yours the past few years -- especially back in the magical March of 2010.

Looks like your team is off to a hot start like ours this season -- any insight you can provide on who to watch for and how your team has been playing?

I really don't want to sound biased here, but I'll give it my best shot.

Our team has been playing better than anyone has expected this season.  Many insiders guessed that this would be a rebuilding year for us, as we lost two very important starters from last season.  A majority of people picked us to finish fourth in the MVC, and right now, we're in the top tier of many MVC power rankings.

Early in the year, we had to fly out to Old Dominion and play them on a saturday night.  Then fly all the way across the country and play St. Mary's (our one loss) at what would have been 1 am our time (11 pm in Cali) two nights later.  That game is what may have skewed a lot of statistics (see the post about ANTHONY JAMES, as he went like 1-15 from the field that night).  Other than the one setback, our coach has said that UNI has been playing together better than he has expected for this time of the year; especially since we have two true freshmen starting for us.  The reason we're playing the DIII school right now is because it got rescheduled from earlier in the year when St. Mary's was added to the schedule.  Luckily for us, it should be a "warm up" game, and our team shouldn't be too worn out for the next night.

Your scouting report seems pretty accurate for the most part.  Koch and Rank can hit the three point shots if given the opportunity.  But... so can four other people (off the top of my head).  ANTHONY JAMES can hit shots from just about anywhere it seems.  While JAMES  is our points leader statistically, he can have no problems scoring zero points in a game if it means getting a win.  What I mean by that is, just about any one of our players can be the scoring threat.  JAMES dropped 28 vs. CSU, Koch lead with 21 vs. UW-M, and even a guy who averaged about 2 points off the bench dropped 14 vs. Iowa St.

Defensively, our team is very patient.  They play a strong man to man defense a majority of the time and will limit the opponents opportunities for second chance points, which is why the defensive rebound percentage is really high, and the offensive is well... not so high.

We typically play about 9-10 people per game.  Even though the stat sheet shows about 7-8, our coach will rotate in other guys depending on the opponent and their style of play.  Other than that, if any of you are making the trip to Cedar Falls, I'm not sure what to tell you in terms of attendance.  The school is on winter break, so it might be slim for students.

Andy Katz has this game in his "Places to Be" section of his Weekly Watch.

Tuesday
Cedar Falls, Iowa (Ohio at Northern Iowa)
: Don't look now, but Ohio is 9-1 with wins over Marshall and Oakland and a down-to-the-wire loss at Louisville. UNI is likewise 9-1 and seemingly on the path to an at-large NCAA tournament bid. This is your official sneaky-good mid-major matchup of the week.

There's a thread now and their fans are giving us a lot of respect. Much more than the Wright State fans did.   This should be a very good game. The couple of times I've seen UNI I was more impressed with them than I was with Louisville.  They play tough D like Louisville but their offense is better albeit much more methodical.

JSF:  I also noticed that UNI appears to be very good at playing lock down defense and forcing turnovers.  Opponents assist/turnover ratio is very ugly.  Which means Ohio will have to pay extra attention to taking care of the ball.

Too bad Bill Raftery wasn't announcing this particular shot...it deserved a major ONIONS call. One the ballsiest shots I've ever seen taken.

Both teams got votes in the AP poll this week, which adds a little more to the pot.  The winner could vault toward Top 25; the loser will likely drop off the radar for a while.  Ohio seems to be cooking in all facets of the game right; hope they keep it up.

News from Panther Nation forum - Jake Koch was in sweats tonight gametime - went home before game ended. Some heard he "was not feeling well". Hmmm......

From Panther Nation:

Coach said in pre-game that Jake was under the weather. I'm thinking that if this was the Ohio game he maybe would have played and taken tomorrow off, but who knows. Nice to not have to play him tonight if he is not feeling well, though.
