This was written on Pounding the Rock to blast the Clippers, but when I read it, I thought our team.

"Building a team the right way pays off. This is a team sport. Flashy players do not win championships. Athleticism does not win championships. And I'm sorry to report this, defense doesn't win championships, either. Teamwork wins championships. Teamwork that is developed over years and sweat and tears. There are no magical ingredients. Hard work pays off and that is why team sports are king. We love it. The good guys win. That's how it always works."

Based on your interaction/knowledge of this team versus past years, would you say they agree with this statement more as a whole than in the past?

I dunno about that.  You can certainly field a competitive team in college merely by having about two fine players.

In the pros, talent will also get you pretty far.  And, basketball is not a difficult game.  Top players who hustle and are smart (= commit to defense) will get it done.  After they've played together for not many games at all.

In college, I'll buy that a team lacking pure stars needs some time to gel.  In the pros, a half season give or take a few games should do it.

Might take more time at either level to win a championship...but about what I state above to be in the top tier of teams.

Basketball is not that complicated.

Good stuff.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Yes. It's also the same thing that made the 2005 team successful (and sunk the 2006 team).

I just don't think this is the case in college basketball as a whole.

This may be a micro/macro argument.

In the MAC, I'd agree that if you're the better team you'll probably win. But against overwhelming talent, that flies out the window.

Syracuse doesn't have better teamwork than Ohio. They don't have any more camaraderie than the Bobcats. They don't, relatively, work harder. But I think they'd beat Ohio by 15 points.

There is no developing of teamwork in college basketball. Kyrie Irving played for a year at Duke. There was no bonding going on there.

And the good guys win is...just overwhelming earnest. And naive.

Carmelo Anthony was flashy at Syracuse. When you're a freshman, you're nothing but flash. He beat a team full of Kansas players that probably deserved the title more.

Monroe, you fairly well summed up why I like college hoops for more than the pros:  There's less TEAM.

Despite what others have said here, I agree for the most part with this statement.   The good guys, or gals, don't always win but the team that has good teamwork usually wins and often beats the team with more talent but less teamwork.  If you look back at the Ohio glory years in the '60s, you'll see that Gentleman Jim won many games against teams with better talent and athleticism because OHIO played excellent team ball.  I've notice this year that some aspects of our current team remind me of those days of yore.  I think JG has the ability to build the same type of team chemistry that Snyder did.  I wouldn't have said this a year or two ago.  I think JG has become a better coach through some OJT.

This probably needs to be on an OU Bobcat T-Shirt.  Great find and post.

Counterpoint: Northern Iowa-Kansas, 2010.

I didn't say it fit perfectly, but it made me think of this team. It doesn't transfer neatly, but I do think it helps explain our success. No, we wouldn't beat Syracuse, but our cohesiveness gives us an advantage against teams of similar or even a little more talent, which includes everyone in the conference.

After watching HSE beat the thug wanna bes from Indy NOrth Central tonite I was thinking something along the same lines....especially after sitting with the Butler kids and talking to a couple of them about he last 2 seasons . THey are sorting it out at Butler this year but those tenets are deeply ingrained in each of those kids and whether you see them on the court or sitting in the stands their actions are the same. THose above words describe what us native born basketball freaks believe everytime we think of Hoops.

Clippers are not very good.  I've seen most of their games this year on tv in L.A.  Griffin is a fabulous physical talent but doesn't yet know that much about playing basketball:  no particular defense and not much knowledge of pick and roll/the two man game.  But 2-3 or so times a game he does something physically that is crazy.  I like Mo Williams--a pretty good player who is fearless.  Clippers markedly lack team play on offense.

Other than Syracuse in 03, lately how many national champions have been built on the back of a one & doner? Not many, if any. They always seem to lose out to the teams with veteran leadership.
