Nice article on the 3 point line

Interesting article with regard to the 3 point line history and the BBL moving it back 50 cm this year. I am sure some of you can remember the time before the line was on the floor and the backlash surrounding it as well as Dean Smith and the 4 corners before there was a shot clock.

We laugh about shooters that "crowd the line". If you watch shooters in shoot around or warm ups you will see many that shoot with their toes on the line. Those guys develope a muscle memory at taht distance. You can pick out the real shooters as they are all over as opposed to working the arc.

Someone in the COnvo was asking me about Bob Donewald a few weeks ago. Answer is in the article if you are the one and reading this.

THought about my pops who always lamented the bad habits kids get with the arc on the floor. THey start in grade school lofting shots up from just behind the arc. When I get a kid who has developed the habit and the accompanying bad mechanics I take them to a grade school gym here that has no arc and talk to them about catching and shooting and purposely throw them the ball in varying spots where they have to catch and shoot anywhere they are to break the habit of moving the shot forward or back to find the arc. Personally, I dont care if younger players dont ever attempt a shot outside the paint if it means they take one with bad mechanics before they have the strength to get the ball to the rim. I am not impressed with a grade schooler who can knock in multiple 3 s every game if it means they are doing it with poor mechanics as they never get rid of the bad habits later dooming them to achieving less than their potential.

I have been mulling OUr shooting over all year. After last night I am more mystified. When you sit at home watching multiple games and look at NCAA athletes you got to wonder who is breaking down the shooting individually and refining or retraining shooters. OTOH I have pretty much conceded that females who are good shooters by and large are VERY consistently good because they generally have more space (read less defensive pressure) and get their feet set and mechanics in line better than guys

Lastly, Interesting comments on the BBL and percentages but this one caught my eye .

Three-point shooting percentages are down a couple of percentage points on last season. Worcester, who lead the league with 35.5%, would have struggled to make the top three in last season's category with that average.

Very interesting. The points on women players I think right on. After last nights R Morris game and OUr Horrid 3 (& other) shooting, I came away, and still wondering about a different "immeasurable" factor - "confidence". Will not name names about those I wonder about (though likely very obvious) - except for a couple I have less concerns about that as an issue, and who did not get as many 3 attempts up last night - namely Nick & Stevie..........

Seems like in viewing tape of games from before the three point and shooting clock eras, that there was less screening, especially ball screens. Is that because without a shot clock, there was not as much urgency to get an open shot quickly?

Interesting article, but I'm not sure I agree with the writer that the entire spacing and flow of the game depends on the three point line. What would the game be like today without a three point line? Of course, the mid range game Ohio69 loves would be emphasized a lot more. But, would there be an ugly scrum under the basket on most possessions without the three point line...or not?

Till you show me you are going to make me pay I am going to leave you wide open out there all day long. Case in point ....when we played Tennessee I asked Tommy why he played so far off Prince ... he said .. I knew he could beat me off the first step but could not shoot the 3 so I took away his angles and let him shoot all the threes he wanted.

because you all care about my opinion (i make stupid), i would be fine if they'd do away with the three point line. seems to emphasize a skill (long distance shooting) that is away from the heart of the team game of basketball. give me intense, thoughtful, hustling defense and offense. with movement, movement, reversals, movement, screens, fake screens, pick and roll, and movement. basketball.
