This is very key moment in time for this team.
They have been too focused on records rather than playing well.
These last 3 games our D softened.
Unless we can shoot better we need to rely on our D to compensate for this weakness.
Last night we seemed to lack energy.

it is a time to get ready for the MAC.

I thought we had energy, guys were full of energy. We lacked a lot of other intangibles. Focus, BBIQ, desire, all those things that make up the aggressor, the one that is said to have outhustled the other. It is all semantics but heart,  character and desire are the elements that generate what many folks see as energy. Robby Mo had that, walked in having been there and intend on going back. What many perceive as arrogance and aggressive behaviour is swagger and confidence from having been there and within that heart of a champion beats the desire to go back.

OUr kids will get there. Groce is building a monster from the ground up. Book it.

never argue with idiots, they bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Spot on Borna. While certainly the outcome was disappointing, that game had the makings of a total RMU blow-out. We struggled to find offensive flow, continuity, floor spacing, poor defensive positioning which led to a rebounding rout deficiency, beyond awful 3 pt shooting, missed dunks, etc.

RMU refused to lose and for that they should be commended and while I have a bit of trouble saying they deserved to win( 31 TO's and 26 fouls usually will get you blown out) in the end they deserved to win. All that said I think it speaks to OHIO's credit that we were 1 missed 3 with 3 chances in the last 40 secs. will pulling a win out of our _sses and one we truly wouldn't have deserved but would have taken.

It was a bad all-around night, it happens. I'm not the least bit discouraged or worried that it will become a trend.  The fact that Groce has depth and guys constantly having to prove themselves to get floor time will help correct performances like we saw last night. Getting kicked in the teeth before the start of the MAC, if nothing else will be a lessen that you better come ready to play every night. Something tells me Groce will use last night as a 'teaching" experience and they will all be the better for it.

I don't think either team deserved to win.

Still, it's not the end of the world. I am, however, concerned with our rebounding performance and how well we can improve on that in MAC play when we are against the teams with far superior big men.

It sounds like the 3 respondents to my post are not concerned with the points I made.
I certainly hope you all are right and I am wrong.

We need to get Stevie in the game more. When he came in and took it down the court for the layup and 1 they crowd went wild and stevie was more than pumped up. He brings energy to the team and you have to love his effort on defense.

Agree that we need to shoot better.  We rely on making the 3.  We don't attack the rim well.  And, Baltic is getting better and better but we are not reliable scoring from the post.  So, when we are not making threes, we are in trouble.  Man, many of those missed threes were great looks.  Sure DJ threw up his 2-4 marburyesque three pointers.  But, so many were within the offense and open.  Just a bad night shooting.

I actually thought the energy/effort was there last night.  But, nothing seemed to go right.  Bornacatfan's mention of BBIQ is right on.  A basketball savvy fan in front of me asked "what else can we do wrong tonight?" after one of the seeminly many low-BBIQ offensive possessions.

Uhhhh OK

every time they step between the lines is key. To compete at the level this program is goijng there are no days off. When a kid like Michael Kidd-Gilchrist out of his own volition starts a "breakfast club" where the athletes lift and have breakfast together above and beyond what their coaching staff thinks they need then to take a practice off or a day off is unacceptable and actually harkens back to what happened many times under the previous regime.

Not gonna say the team did not focus on records but if you listen to Walt he said essentially that they were taking things one day at a time, I don't think there is any p-int in time where the coaching staff is letting them not live in the here and now or let them get big heads. Your assertion that they were even thinking about records does not reflect my experience with any of those guys.

Can t  say much about the D softening .....not gonna argue relative levels of intensity as I am not really sure whether they dropped off or the teams they played did not have better plans and executed them well. I like the system we use for defense but question the ability of guys to listen and execute. Sitting in the Bobcat Black seats I was impressed by Robby Mo's Defensive ability to  sniff out most of our sets and options and shut them down although I saw Ivo's dunk coming as soon as he opted to run through the high ball screen and circle for the bucket......NICELY EXECUTED

I think our shooting was an anomaly caused by huge difference in RObby Mos defensive pressure. I thought we looked at defensive close outs and guys hurried shots (sped their release up) or did not fundamentally execute the shots (Falling backwards and out bounds whilst kicking one leg out looks good on tape but it rarely goes in)....i.e the shots they shot in the game were not the same shots they shoot in practice. Using Defense to balance out poor shooting is kind of akin to taxes and balanced budgets.

Already addressed energy.

Not sure there is a right or wrong here unless I read it wrong. Just an opinion held by each poster and discussed like gentlemen.

Hustle/determination/confidence was the difference - none can be X'd or O'd........

I wonder if Walter was tired - ? Coach directly told him him at one point in the game that he needed to "Lead". His shots were short, drives to basket and then up just a bit short - maybe I was just "seeing" overly critical - ?

12-1 does not necessarily mean that a team has learned to play at a top level every night.  It's not two steps forward, two steps forward, two steps forward.  Occasionally it's two steps forward and one step back.  So, do we learn from Bob Mo's example of toughness (turned it over a million times but didn't let that affect their D and their rebounding...so got the very-nice-for-them road W)?

We are on the right track.  Gotta keep on it, keep on improving.
